00:00The U.S. military put the final touches on a rare deployment.
00:05700 Marine soldiers set to head to Los Angeles to back up federal immigration authorities.
00:11They're part of a growing military presence in the city.
00:14Thousands of National Guard troops have already been sent in by the Trump administration,
00:19a move California's leaders have blasted as inflammatory and unnecessary.
00:23But President Donald Trump is standing by his decision.
00:26You would have had a horrible situation had I not sent them in, horrible.
00:33You'd be reporting on a lot of death and a lot of destruction that's not going to take place.
00:37I think if you look, every night it got less and less.
00:41They were met with very strong force, the bad people, the bad, sick people that do what they do.
00:47U.S. Marines are normally deployed to assist in major disasters like that of Hurricane Katrina or 9-11.
00:54Rarely are they used for domestic policing.
00:58The protests in L.A. sparked by a series of ICE immigration raids escalated over the weekend
01:03with demonstrators blocking a major freeway and setting cars alight.
01:08But on Monday, the situation was far less raucous.
01:11State officials say the president's dire warnings don't match reality.
01:15For many protesters, the goal is to express their opposition to the recent raids.
01:19The mayor is calling on the president to stop them.
01:21I'm going to put out a call to him today.
01:24I have been talking to...
01:27I want to tell him to stop the raids.
01:30I want to tell him that this is a city of immigrants.
01:33I want to tell him that if you want to devastate the economy of the city of Los Angeles,
01:37then attack the immigrant population.
01:40The recent deployments are expected to cost $130 million, a figure that has raised eyebrows.
01:46But Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insists the deployment is vital to protect federal immigration
01:52agents on the ground.
