00:00The student-led movement in Bangladesh forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and
00:05leave the country on August 5, 2024. How do you view this development in the context of
00:11Bangladesh's political history? You know, there was a movement in July-August. There was a demand
00:19for quota reform in the government job system. And as a student's organization, Bangladesh
00:25Students League, the ruling party, Bangladesh, Awamilik and the government, they played a
00:31significant role to fulfill the demands of the students. As it is a judicial process, Awamilik
00:39take every necessary steps to fulfill the demands. And it is Awamilik, it is Sheikh Hasina who
00:44actually abolished the quota system in 2018. And as it is in the appellate division, government
00:52lawyers, they applied for the, appealed for the student's fulfillment. And also Bangladesh
00:58Students League, you know that we engage in policy advocacy. We demanded to the government,
01:04we organize protests, rallies, assemblies. Because we are committed to the rights of the students.
01:14We are committed to the fair treatment in the job employment. And we also arrange such sort
01:19of programs like door-to-door campaign to get the views of the students about the quota reform
01:26system. So, actually, government fulfilled the students' demand. Bangladesh Students League
01:33also played a significant role. But the main aim of the movement is using the movement for
01:41the own purpose of the fundamental and other opposing political groups. So, in cover of the movement,
01:48they actually, you know that they prepared for something big like austing the government. And
01:53for this reason, killings have been happened. Students have been attacked. And they did this
02:01by their militant cadres. And by doing this, actually, they paved the way of toppling the government.
02:13And if we see the current context of Bangladesh, what is the outcome of the situation of the 5th
02:19August event? Right now, Bangladesh is totally a, you know, the fascist state. Because who are in power,
02:26they are not elected by the people. They are, they do not come in a constitutional process. They do not
02:31have any sort of legal basis. They are totally undemocratic regime. A self-proclaimed government
02:38is running the country. Another thing is, you know, that Bangladesh previously is played vital role
02:46in fighting against terrorism, extremism and fundamentalism. And Bangladesh is now, is totally
02:53under the, you know, the fundamental political wings, other terrorist organizations who do not believe
02:59in constitutional democracy, or liberal values, or a competitive democracy. They believe in
03:05Shadiya law. They believe in extremism. That was their main agenda. So, Bangladesh is undemocratic
03:12in one sense. And Bangladesh is also in a fundamental state right now. Our economy has been collapsed.
03:18Women are become the victim of the situation, moral policing, mob attacks, you know, the attack on the
03:25minority peoples. Bangladesh became in the law and order situation right now in Bangladesh. There is
03:32actually no law and order situation. It is a totally lawless state right now. There is no, you know,
03:40that the independence of the judiciary. Government directed the verdict of the court. Whatever the government
03:47demands, the court is ready to fulfill that sort of demands. Government is saying that these people
03:55should get bail or not. They are changing the previous verdicts. They are doing whatever they want. And
04:02the, so judiciary is right now in Bangladesh is a, you know, that you can say it extension of the
04:08executive actually. And also in regard the freedom of praise, freedom of assembly, freedom to protest.
04:16And the situation, you know that the media is totally controlled by the government right now.
04:22You, only valid opinion in Bangladesh right now is, is the government's opinion. You have the only liberty,
04:31if you support the government. The supporting government is the only option by the government
04:37right now. Journalist, you know, the journalist has been harassed. They sent to the prison. Their
04:45jobs has been curtailed as per the wish of the government. Actually, this is the total scenario of
04:53the government. And the fascist union's regime, they are using the state machineries for
04:58doing their personal business, you know, that the consolidating the power. And any, you know,
05:07that any political party can be elected and govern a country. But they are actually unelected,
05:14undemocratic and they are proclaiming themselves as the ruler of Bangladesh. So, it is actually a
05:20disgrace to the people of Bangladesh, I think. Your organization has been backed and designated
05:27as a terrorist group by the Bangladeshi government. You know, more recently, even the Awami League
05:33was spanned. Now, how do you respond to these actions by the interim government led by chief advisor
05:39It is, it is one of the proof, the how fascist this government is. You know that Bangladesh Awami League,
05:46it is the, it is the creator of Bangladesh actually. It lead the independence movement, democratic movement,
05:53movement movement against the military rulers. And you know that other than the 15 years of military rule,
06:03more than 80 percent times, Bangladesh Awami League is elected by the people of Bangladesh. So, it is,
06:09it represented the people of, majority people of the Bangladesh. Bangladesh, you know that Bangladesh
06:16experienced economic transformation by this political party. Our every sort of whether it is
06:26human index, millennium development goals, sustainable development goals, per capita income, GDP,
06:32reserve, you know that the use employment, job security, industrialization. In every cases,
06:40Bangladesh Awami League played the role. And Bangladesh Awami League, you know that the,
06:44it believes in the core values of the liberation war, which is, you know that the democracy, which is
06:53fight against discrimination, secularism, liberal democratic values. These are the principles of
06:59Bangladesh Awami League. And by banning this party, this government is unboxing itself that this is
07:07actually a fascist regime. And another reason of banning Bangladesh Awami League and also ban, they banned
07:16Bangladesh Students League. You know that their fear of the protest, their, their fear that the people will
07:22rise, people will have their voice and people will reclaim over the country. This is their voice. So,
07:29they are also afraid of ballot. They are trying to, they are, you know that they have banned one of the
07:35largest political party in the country. And they said about fear election, inclusive election. So,
07:42actually, they are afraid of ballot boxes. And also, by doing this, you know that the, they actually,
07:48this is not against, not only a decision against a political party. They actually,
07:52uh, disenfranchises, uh, the people of Bangladesh because, because if you banned the most, uh,
08:00promising, most, uh, uh, popular political party in a country, you are actually, uh, shut down the
08:06window of people's, uh, choice actually. Another thing is, you know that, that, uh, as Bangladesh right
08:11now is a fundamental state is that it has a huge network where the, with the international terrorist
08:17organizations, uh, uh, who believes in Khilafat, who believes in, uh, Sharia law, who have, uh,
08:23their relationships with other terrorist organizations with the country. So, they, uh,
08:28you know that, they, uh, they thought Awamilik as a threat to their, uh, to their dream of making a
08:34Khilafat. Awamilik is, is, uh, is challenged, uh, for them, uh, because Awamilik believes in secularism,
08:41in, and in democratic values. Awamilik fight against, uh, terrorism. So, you know that, for their,
08:47uh, for making Bangladesh a safe haven of, uh, terrorism, for, uh, making Bangladesh a breeding
08:52ground of, uh, fundamentalism, and for, uh, making Bangladesh a, uh, you know that, a harbor of, uh,
09:00terrorist activities, they, uh, banned, uh, Bangladesh Awamilik. And another reason of
09:05banning Bangladesh Awamilik, you know that they, uh, they, they are trying to, uh, be in power,
09:11whatever they want, whatever they, uh, wish. This is the only government, uh, in the world, maybe,
09:16uh, who, who, uh, does not know about their duration, uh, actually. So, uh, uh, you know
09:22that, to, to enlarge their, uh, power to, uh, uh, make their duration, uh, more, uh, uh,
09:28they are, they banned Bangladesh Awamilik. But, uh, it is true that, uh, they do not, uh, this is a
09:34government who is itself had, do not have any sort of legal basis. So, I think this decision
09:40is totally illegitimate. This is, uh, against our constitution. This is against the, uh,
09:45democratic, uh, norms of, uh, Bangladesh. Chief advisor has announced that national
09:52elections will be held next year. So, do you believe that the elections without the participation
09:57of the army can truly be considered meaningful or credible? No, there is, uh, you know that
10:03election is not priority of this government, actually. This is just a, uh, state-sponsored
10:09drama, uh, just by, uh, you know that, uh, they are, uh, uh, they, they will, uh, use this, uh,
10:16for their own, uh, purpose, actually. Uh, because they banned Bangladesh Awamilik. They, uh,
10:21Bangladesh, uh, uh, uh, holds all sort of fascist characteristics. There, there is no, uh, uh,
10:28chance of, uh, the people, uh, have their own, uh, choices. Uh, so, uh, the election is a first,
10:34uh, I think. The, the election, uh, uh, uh, is, uh, your, if you are saying about election, you are
10:40banning, uh, uh, another political parties, uh, and the, if you see the current situation in
10:46Bangladesh, as per the report of Human Rights Watch, uh, more than three lakh and
10:5150,000 people, uh, has been, uh, arrested and, uh, uh, uh, took to the prison in last 10 months.
10:58In last month, uh, in every day, more than 1500 people, uh, got arrested and, uh, had been taken
11:05to the, uh, prison. So, this is the, uh, uh, uh, actual, uh, scenario. And, uh, uh, I think, uh, uh,
11:12and, uh, Bangladesh, the people of Bangladesh, you know, they are, uh, waiting, uh, for the people's
11:18representative. They are, uh, waiting for the constitutional rule. They are waiting for the
11:23democratic representative to govern the country. So, if, uh, so, you know, that considering the
11:29current context, if you are saying that you are going to do elections and it is without a
11:34omelie, it is actually, uh, uh, an omelette without egg or you are, uh, actually, you are staging, uh,
11:42uh, the famous drama of Shakespeare, Hamlet, without the Prince of Denmark, actually. And also,
11:49uh, uh, uh, you are, uh, not liable to the people's right, to the people's voting rights,
11:55people, uh, civil liberties, uh, people, uh, political rights. And, uh, you are, uh, you know,
12:01that, uh, uh, saying about, uh, saying about, uh, election, that's thing, those things, reforms.
12:07It is, uh, actually, uh, you know, that just, uh, uh, just to divert the, uh, uh, concentration of the,
12:14uh, uh, people, uh, I think. And if you, uh, think also the other matters that the,
12:19an election, uh, uh, if you want to have an election, uh, the government must be capable of
12:24doing that. This is such a government, uh, which have no control over the, uh, law and order situation.
12:30Uh, we, we, we see Bangladesh, uh, is totally lawless, uh, country, uh, right now, uh,
12:36women's cannot play football. Uh, they are getting threatened by the, uh, fundamental groups.
12:42They, they cannot give the security of the women. They cannot give the security of the minority.
12:47They cannot, uh, give the security of the opposing voices. And they are saying that they will, uh,
12:52do, uh, uh, uh, elections. So, I think this is, uh, actually, uh, not, uh, possible.
13:00And the, for, uh, you know, that for restoring democracy in Bangladesh, uh, we have no other
13:06options other than the removal of this current, uh, fascist regime. And this is the priority,
13:12uh, uh, of the government. Another thing is, you know, that, that what is, uh, doing, uh,
13:16what, what are the works of the current, uh, government? If you see, if you see the works of the,
13:22uh, uh, chief interim, uh, uh, government, uh, professor Yunus, you know, that he himself declared
13:28himself as the interim, uh, government chief and, uh, you know, that the ignoring all sort of ideals
13:35of, uh, uh, conflict of interest. He is the, uh, chief of the government and he himself exempted,
13:42uh, from the cases that are against him. He, uh, you know, that he himself exempted more than
13:48six, uh, hundred and, uh, 66 crores, uh, taka, which, uh, which was, uh, uh, with, uh,
13:56660 crores, taka, uh, tax exemption. He got himself, uh, by that. And he gives himself to his,
14:03uh, you know, that, uh, Grameen digital wallet for digital banking. He himself, uh, you know,
14:09that give license, uh, to his universities, to his new, uh, business boroughs. He is representing
14:14Bangladesh and he is doing business with, uh, Starlings. Whenever he visited the other
14:19countries, he never played a role of the, uh, government chief rather than he played the role,
14:24real of a executive officer of his, uh, private businesses. You know, that the previously Grameen
14:30bank and other, uh, uh, banks, uh, have 30 percent government share. Uh, he curtailed it and right now
14:36Bangladesh, uh, uh, uh, the government has 10 percent share and he himself is the, uh, interim
14:42government chief. So, actually, he is, uh, you know, the usually using the estate
14:46machineries for his own, uh, um, personal agenda. Uh, restoring democracy is not his
14:52priority. Election is not his, uh, priority and he himself is a threat to democracy, actually.
15:00Despite the significant political upheaval in Bangladesh, you know, the international community
15:06has largely remained silent. Why do you think the world is not reacting more strongly to these developments?
15:12I, uh, I hope the, uh, government, uh, I hope the, the world, uh, will have their, uh, voice also
15:19because there must be a wake up, wake up call for Bangladesh because right now, Bangladesh is a
15:25breeding ground for, uh, terrorism. There are, uh, gross human rights violations cases, uh, in, uh,
15:32Bangladesh's, uh, uh, in, and there are, uh, so many things are, uh, happening in Bangladesh,
15:38which is, uh, uh, in consistence with the universal, uh, goal declared by the organizations, uh, other,
15:46uh, governments. One of the thing is, uh, who are reigning power in Bangladesh, uh, as they are, uh,
15:52uh, as they are, um, you know that, uh, as they are uh, uh, giving patronage to the fundamental
15:58groups. So, it is ultimately a, a threat to the regional stability, peace and, uh, harmony.
16:05international terrorist organizations are you know that they are doing their meetings they are having
16:10their view actions programs in bangladesh they are doing their trainings you know the pakistan's
16:16isi which is infamously involved with this terrorism terrorist activities they are having their
16:25works meetings with the other organizations who are convicted of many sort of terrorist attacks
16:33they got the government blessings they are having their meeting with the
16:38interim government chief and you know that the women empowerment inclusive society and also
16:48championing the human rights is one of the priorities of the world and the liberal governments
16:55all over the world so right now what is the situation bangladesh bangladesh is actually
17:00uh the so-called nobel laureate he himself preaching peace outside bangladesh and bangladesh is in a in
17:08a stable position where every people is feeling threatened every people's life is at risk there
17:15is he is outside he is saying about democracy about liberal values but in bangladesh if you have any
17:21dissenting voice if you have any opposing voice actually you have no right to leave you have no
17:26right to stay in bangladesh for for protesting for having their own views for having their own
17:35political beliefs for for trying to do advocacy for their for the human rights and other political rights
17:44every people is becoming a victim of the current
17:48regime if you see the situation as i am a student representative right now in bangladesh more than more
17:56than five lakh students for just being a activist of bangladesh students league for just being a
18:01follower of bangladesh awami league for just being supportive to to the ideology of liberation war
18:09for just having a liberal values for just you know that doing advocacy for secularism for inclusive
18:15society they cannot participate in the classes in the examinations they cannot go to the exam halls so
18:22right to education is totally threatened uh in our uh country and many students they for whatever
18:31reasons the government may may know they are they took them they are you know that they are also
18:38attacked by the fundamental groups there are incidents of mob attacks and there are for baseless cases
18:45for no reasons they took them out of out of his home and
18:49uh take them to the prison so this is the actual scenario most of the students more than
18:56millions of uh student activities who who are connected with the uh our party they you know that
19:04they cannot remain in their houses they cannot do their uh usual jobs they are all times threatened by
19:09the government machineries and other uh other uh fundamental groups uh supported uh by the government
19:17so this is the actual actual scenario so i do believe that the uh world uh there is a wake up this
19:24is a there must be a wake up call uh for democracy uh in bangladesh the world uh must listen uh to the
19:34voices of the people of bangladesh the repressive regime uh of bangladesh must come to be an end
19:42justice must be maintained and fundamental human rights uh must be uh restored and uh fundamentalism
19:51sponsored by the inus regime uh must be you know that must be uh uh totally eradicated uh from our
20:00country other than this will be a serious security challenge for the peace and regional stability of
20:06south asia there there will be many sort of uh uh events for uh uh terrorism all over the uh world
20:17and the women women empowerment uh for for the women's women's rights will be totally uh at uh at
20:24danger and uh women will be will become a target of moral policing uh for uh for you know that they will
20:33they won't have any sort of rights uh whether it is education whether it is living whether it is
20:39political uh freedom so this is actually the situation in bangladesh and the people of bangladesh
20:48is uh the people of bangladesh are fighting the people of bangladesh are trying to have their voices
20:54the people of bangladesh are trying to combat
20:57the people of bangladesh is against this uh you know the fascist regime and the world is obviously
21:06responsible uh to be on the uh on the side of the people
