Sir Keir Starmer promised there would be no more “dithering” about backing nuclear power as the Government committed to the Sizewell C plant. The prime minister said the “change of mindset” would help free the UK from reliance on international fossil fuel markets and prevent price spikes such as those in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Speaking at a college in Ipswich, Sir Keir said: “No more dithering, no more delay, no more being unclear about what we’re going to do, a real statement of intent as we go forward.” Report by Covellm. 00:00This is about good, well-paid, secure jobs, skilled jobs, across a range of topics as we go down this road in relation to size well.
00:09And it is an incredible story in its own right, because some of you know this, but the first reactor in this country was, I think, built in 1956.
00:21And then in the 11 years after that, we built another 20 reactors. That's amazing. Absolutely amazing.
00:30And then it all dropped off. And the ambition went. And governments dithered and delayed.
00:36And so the last reactor was 1995, 30 years ago. And I think that was size well B.
00:44So here, to put this down today, is really important. It's a change, not just an important decision for the future.
00:50It's a change of mindset. No more dithering, no more delay, no more being unclear about what we're going to do.
00:57A real statement of intent as we go forward. And having our own energy in this country that we control gives us security, gives us independence.
01:06So Putin can't put his boot on our throat. And it means that we can control the prices in a way that we haven't been able to in recent years,
01:14which has meant very high prices for businesses, for households and for families.
01:18So this is about a way of investing in the future of the country.
