Families and members of the community braved the rain for the annual Aspull Worm Charming Championship 2025, held at St Elizabeth’s Parish Hall and on the village green.
00:00Here we are in Aspel at Worm Charming, the event that happens once a year here and I don't believe it happens anywhere else in the country.
00:07So, Ruth Atherton has been the organiser for many years raising money for Central Elizabeth Church. So what's it about, Ruth?
00:13Well, the idea came years ago to see how we can do something different to raise money for our church and the community.
00:20We came up with this idea of getting the worms out of the ground, see how many worms you can get and that winner gets a prize.
00:25As well as that, we've got a load of other traditional games such as Crockerysmarsh, we've got a bar, we've got Tombola and it's a real community event and it's lovely to see.
00:34They've become our friends over the years, we see the same people over and over again to support this event.
00:40So, Worm Charming and we've got the Charming Ron Conway here. As counsellors, we've supported this event since its inception, so what does it mean, Ron?
00:47Well, it's just a great day for Aspel. I don't think this happens anywhere else in the country, but it's just great for the community.
00:54It brings the churches together, brings everybody in the community together.
00:58Like I said, I once told a bloke that I was Worm Charming and it went from that, from telling other people around Greater Manchester, we go worm tickling.
