00:00Well, they were good. I've just had some very nice dumplings here in beautiful Warsaw, just outside the lovely old town.
00:11And I'm at Piet Smak Stare, a very nice outdoor restaurant.
00:17The bill for this and a cup of tea should have come in at £10, 50 drotties.
00:23But guess what? Dynamic currency conversion. That is where the merchant offers you the choice to pay in your own currency rather than local currency.
00:36Why do they do that? It's not because they want to be nice to you. It's because they get a markup from it.
00:43In the end, I paid 10% extra. So that's a pound. It's annoying.
00:50But the crucial thing is that you need to be aware if you're ever offered the choice, then always go for local currency because otherwise you're going to be paying a lot more.
01:02And you should always make sure that the card machine is giving you the choice that you select local currency and you stick to that.
01:12And do not let the very nice proprietor do that work for you, because then when you do, and you've been tricked into paying 10% for dynamic currency conversion,
01:25he'll just say, sorry, nothing to do with me. It's the machine.
01:28It isn't, but you're completely stuffed, as I was with those very nice stuffed dumplings.
