Nick Chubb has signed with the Texans, and we don't understand why the Commanders haven't addressed that spot.
Transcript
00:00Danny, Nick Chubb is reportedly signing a deal with the Houston Texans.
00:03He only averaged 3.3 yards per carry in eight games last year.
00:08He missed, you'll remember, because of one of the most gruesome, awful national TV,
00:13like terrible, all the LCLs, all the CLs got torn apart.
00:17So he missed 15 games two seasons ago and then another nine last season.
00:22So 24 of 34 games the last two years.
00:25But the last time he was healthy, he averaged five a pop.
00:29Is he someone they should have at least kicked the tires on?
00:32We keep going back to the same story, you and I.
00:35Like every time a running back, J.K. Dobbins visits the Broncos.
00:38Nick Chubb goes to the Texans.
00:39We go, another one off the board, another one off the board.
00:42We're acting like they are supposed to be making these calls.
00:45They have no interest.
00:45They don't seem to care at all.
00:47They're like, why do you care if one went off the board?
00:49We've got Brian Robinson and Austin Eckler and Chris Rodriguez.
00:53We're doing this thing where we're putting our ideas on them,
00:57and they don't seem to care at all about what we think.
00:59100%.
00:59So they don't have urgency on this position.
01:02They don't.
01:02I mean, I've got a lot of people, dare I call them, stands for Crosskey Merit,
01:09the seventh-round pick, who they played a game a little while ago.
01:12So if he works out, then, yeah, you've solved your running back group.
01:14I don't know.
01:15I just sort of don't set my watch by seventh-round picks turning into stars.
01:19But TBD, of course, on that.
01:21If they really did find something, what a great job at this front office,
01:24scouting department, everybody in between, you know, take a bow,
01:26and you could shove it in my face.
01:28To me, this was a cheap, easy upgrade here just to improve that room.
01:33It doesn't mean I'm just jettisoning Robinson for no reason.
01:37I'm keeping Austin Eckler around.
01:38He's valuable.
01:39To me, this was one of those I would have added somebody for the times
01:44that Eckler's going to be down who might have a slightly larger role.
01:46I would have had somebody to take some of the carries, those early downs from Brian Robinson.
01:51I'm still going to keep him as my thumper.
01:52There was a role for that guy.
01:54I'm just not doing 250 carries to Brian Robinson.
01:56I won't do that anymore.
01:57Now, maybe there's some renaissance.
01:59Maybe it's the offensive line and the blocking will be better,
02:01and you'll see him all of a sudden have vision and have burst and have more wiggle.
02:06I don't know why blocking would do that, but maybe that's the case.
02:09But specific to Chubb, who's in the news here today,
02:11do we think he's got anything left?
02:13Whether Washington's in the running back game or not,
02:16which we've talked about ad nauseum, they're not.
02:19Is this a guy that more teams should have been interested in?
02:21I totally get the lack of interest when he has missed as many games as he has,
02:26and last year he didn't look anything like Nick Chubb pre-injury.
02:31But you add in his age, he's going to be 30 years old this football season,
02:35and I kind of file him away as I would bring him in at next to no money on an ultimate flyer,
02:43like you're the last guy in the room and we'll see what you got left contract.
02:48I don't know if that's – we'll get the terms when he signs with the Texans.
02:52Is that what they're doing?
02:54Or it seems to me like when I hear people talking about Nick Chubb, they go,
02:57he's still really good.
02:58He's better than Brian Robinson.
02:59You could bring him in as your starter.
03:00I think there are people like that out there that you could say that about,
03:04whether that's Dobbins or someone else.
03:05I'm not sure if I would put Chubb in that category.
03:07To me, how could you possibly know that based on what we've seen the last couple years?
03:10That's the key, right, is you have to know now that he's further removed from ACL injury
03:14that was, as you said, particularly gruesome, maybe he does have some of that burst back, the power.
03:19He, to me, was the all-around back, right?
03:21Speed, power, agility, catch the ball, just a really, really good football player.
03:26He was so good.
03:27Before, you know, kind of pre-injury.
03:28So I'm not winning a bidding war for Nick Chubb.
03:30I always think about guys like this, where I go, I got to have it.
03:33I'll win the bidding war.
03:34I will pay the most because I'm desperate.
03:36If somebody else wants to offer him, hey, you'll be our starter, go, I'm just making up a number,
03:41make $7 million this year, okay, fairly well.
03:44But is he worth a call when he's hanging out for weeks at a time?
03:47Absolutely.
03:48Again, I think they missed the boat on this one.
03:49Well, look, he signed with the Texans, who have Joe Mixon as their starter.
03:52They acquired him in a trade with the Bengals.
03:55He was good last year.
03:56They still have Damian Pierce, who two seasons ago was their number one,
03:59who they drafted in the fourth round in 2022.
04:02They also drafted a running back in the fourth round, Woody Marks,
04:05who's going to make that roster and be a part of the team.
04:08So by him signing with Houston, it is a tell to me, there was not a starting job out there.
04:13Right.
04:13That's a good point.
04:14There probably wasn't even a number two job out there where you're making really good money.
04:18This is indicative of the fact that the market was pretty bleak.
04:22So I tend to believe that Washington was probably in lockstep with everybody else on this.
04:28Just not interested.
04:29Maybe it's either no interest or they said to him, hey, we're willing to bring you on at next to nothing
04:36and let you show us that you still got some football left in camp if you want to do that.
04:40But even if they offered that, you would think they would have been a better destination than Houston.
04:43Because that's kind of what the Texans are doing.
04:46Another airplane coming overhead, by the way.
04:48Except that the Texans have a starter and a really good number two
04:51and a drafted number three in the fourth round.
04:53So I would think if it's the same money-ish, same situation-ish, Washington-Houston,
04:59you'd have rolled with Washington because there's a path to actually getting carries quicker,
05:02which tells me he wasn't even getting looks from the running back needy teams.
05:07The Texans are kind of one of the few teams maybe that even called.
05:11Because it's not a good place to sign.
05:12It's not a – for a guy trying to reclaim his career, it is not a good place to sign.
05:15It's actually a bad place.
05:17Yeah.
05:17I mean, this is one of those a lot of dominoes have to fall.
05:20But if you don't have a lot of choices, maybe that's the kind of choice you make.
05:23Yeah, I think that's a smart point, putting two and two together there.
05:26Yeah, my sense is Washington is not interested.
05:30And I know that's – there are 31 teams that said that.
05:33But kind of most specifically, there is a lot – there are a lot of eggs
05:37in the Krosky Merit basket from a lot of fans.
05:41And I'm just one of those, I need to wait and see.
05:44If this was a third-round running back or a guy that had all sorts of hype
05:47and energy around him, maybe.
05:49If you're sold, you know because of that, quote-unquote,
05:51game tape that you watched in 2023.
05:54God bless you.
05:55I don't know.
05:56I will let things play out right there.
05:58But to me, this was one of those, you can go get Jeff Wilson.
06:00You can go get J.K. Dobbins for a guy to supplement that room,
06:03and you'd be better.
