Speaking of which, NFL.com did a piece,
00:02
bunch of veterans and listed,
00:05
these are guys that you're not hearing a lot about,
00:07
but could get cut and save their team a bunch of money.
00:09
No, they listed on that list was Marshawn Latimore.
00:12
I was really surprised to see that name.
00:15
So I think if you're just putting together a list
00:18
and you're, if you've got some formula
00:21
where you just look up veterans who make a lot of money
00:24
that are coming off of bad seasons,
00:27
x-axis is how much money you make,
00:30
y-axis is how bad of a season that you had.
00:32
And then you want people in the bottom right quadrant,
00:35
so to speak, right?
00:37
Marshawn Latimore is gonna be in that quadrant
00:38
because he is due against the cap this season, $18 million.
00:44
And he was downright dreadful at times
00:47
in the playoff run for Washington.
00:50
We know they're probably not going to cut him
00:52
because Adam Peters has come out and said as much,
00:54
number one, because they just traded picks for him
00:57
and it would look really, really bad
00:58
if he played as poorly as he did this past year.
01:00
And then they cut him before the final two years
01:03
of the contract that he has left.
01:05
But they could get out of the deal with zero dead cap.
01:07
This is your one chance to bail.
01:09
You've got an opportunity.
01:10
When you get in the car and start driving,
01:12
you cannot get out again.
01:13
It's like the rollercoaster about to take off.
01:15
You sat down, we're buckling up
01:17
and you're looking at your kid who's a little nervous
01:19
and you're going, hey, buddy,
01:20
if you don't want to ride this thing,
01:22
you got to make that decision right now.
01:24
Because as soon as this thing leaves.
01:25
When they lower those, the bars.
01:27
We cannot come back.
01:28
And so Washington has right now this moment to decide,
01:32
am I paying Marshawn Latimore $18 million or not?
01:35
But this guy, and I don't know, I've never heard of him,
01:37
but it's a writer, does some fantasy stuff at nfl.com.
01:40
He's just going through a bunch of the dudes
01:42
that make a lot of money that didn't play well last year.
01:44
And he's going, are we sure team shouldn't cut this player?
01:47
And he listed Marshawn Latimore.
01:49
Well, I think most of us have decided is coming back.
01:52
And most of us think probably should come back
01:54
based on what they gave up in the trade.
01:56
But it is just another way to look at it.
01:57
You know, it's like walking along
01:59
and now somebody into binoculars and you're like,
02:00
oh, I kind of see what you're talking about.
02:02
$18 million is not nothing for a guy
02:04
that played poorly last season.
02:06
Yeah, and from the piece,
02:08
and notably he was talking about Latimore.
02:09
He was awful in the post season,
02:10
earning a horrific 29.6 coverage grade from PFF
02:13
and allowing 10 catches for 172 yards
02:15
and a 136.6 passer rating on 14 targets.
02:18
That doesn't even sound like
02:20
all of the stuff that he allowed.
02:21
With the release his entire $18 million cap,
02:24
it would become savings in 2025.
02:27
So when-
02:28
What a huge amount of cap space.
02:30
When you read that, you go,
02:32
actually that makes a little sense.
02:34
Now, I don't think it's on the table.
02:35
I think-
02:36
But that's two different things, right?
02:38
Right.
02:39
Does it make sense?
02:39
And will they do it?
02:40
Precisely, and that's where I was going,
02:41
is I don't think that's happening.
02:43
I think he's here.
02:44
I think they're saying,
02:45
we believe he's going to play better next year.
02:47
And we didn't trade for him just for the stretch on,
02:48
although it would have been nice,
02:50
but we think we got something here
02:52
and 18 million is going to be a bargain.
02:54
If we sign someone like this in free agency,
02:55
it would cost 25, 26 or so.
02:58
So I don't think it's happening.
03:01
Put that aside for a second.
03:03
This is kind of reasonable.
03:04
This makes sense to me.
03:05
And I sort of didn't think about it this way,
03:07
but now I'm kind of on the-
03:09
I'm not agitating for it.
03:10
I'm not sitting here telling you that I agree with this,
03:13
but as someone who is not in the confident
03:15
March on Lattimore camp,
03:17
oh, I don't know.
03:18
I don't know.
03:19
I don't know if this is not something
03:20
that Randy Dewey would have to consider.
03:21
I am ambivalent toward Lattimore a little bit
03:25
because I just have so many conflicting feelings now,
03:29
right?
03:30
The first of which is,
03:32
I actually thought when they acquired him
03:34
that he was still an outstanding DB.
03:37
And I have to assume that that is the case.
03:40
I think he was hurt.
03:41
And then when he came back,
03:42
he came back a little too soon and he wasn't a hundred
03:45
percent and what I call chasing his tail,
03:48
meaning, you know,
03:49
he was kind of trying to get back up to speed at a hundred
03:52
percent and it just, it didn't work.
03:54
And I think he is a lot better than he played
03:56
and he will be better this year.
03:57
So I'm going to separate that.
03:59
The other thing is though,
04:00
there is no guarantee of that.
04:03
He had a bunch of hamstring problems in New Orleans.
04:05
Then he came here and wasn't that much healthier
04:08
and wasn't a quick healer.
04:09
He's not getting younger.
04:11
Danny, 18 million against the cap.
04:13
You get every single penny of it.
04:16
It doesn't matter who we're talking about.
04:18
If you're not a star and you're not kind of indebted to
04:21
that player, I think it's gotta be a consideration.
04:24
Now they don't really need $18 million.
04:28
They already have the third most cap space.
04:30
They're already not going to spend all the cap space they
04:32
have.
04:32
I'd love to sit here and tell you,
04:34
they're going to go out and get a corner and an edge and a
04:37
tackle and a wide receiver and a running back.
04:39
And they're going to have 2 million left in cap space.
04:41
They're going to spend right up to the limit.
04:44
Neither of us think that that's going to happen.
04:47
So the 18 is not really needed here.
04:49
If they were minus $3 million against the cap,
04:52
well, now we could have a different conversation
04:54
and probably should have a different conversation where you
04:56
need 18 million and there's no guarantee he's going to
04:59
deliver the goods.
05:00
So you might need that 18 million.
05:02
The last point here is what you gave up for the trade.
05:04
It would look really bad.
05:06
It would be a huge loss.
05:07
And the first huge loss for Adam Peters,
05:09
if you were to cut this player now,
05:11
which they're not considering, I don't think,
05:13
because to your point,
05:14
I really do believe that they think he's going to be awesome
05:16
next year and for the next two years.
05:18
And they think that that's why they acquired them and
05:19
whatever they got, you know,
05:21
after the injury this year was a bonus.
05:23
But to that point,
05:25
I do believe that Marshawn Lattimore at, you know,
05:30
an $18 million rate would be viewed differently if they
05:33
hadn't have just given up the multiple draft picks,
05:35
which is not how you should operate.
05:37
Some cost fallacy style here.
05:39
Because I gave up picks doesn't mean I've now got to keep
05:42
them on my roster.
05:43
I don't think that should be a consideration at this point.
05:45
The only consideration should be now that I've seen him in
05:48
my building and my defense, what do I think he's going to be?
05:50
What kind of guy is he in my locker room and how good a
05:52
player is he going to be next year?
05:53
And so I, some people would,
05:55
would get really, really irritated if they,
05:58
let's just say this comes true when they do cut them and
06:00
save the money.
06:01
I wouldn't, the attempt was very reasonable to me.
06:03
You know what I mean?
06:04
Like, I don't have a problem with you going,
06:06
Hey, we're better than we thought we'd be.
06:07
Let's change course a little bit.
06:08
We didn't give up a one or a two.
06:11
We need some help right now.
06:12
We've got a guy for a couple of years that we think would
06:14
really upgrade this position.
06:15
After we cut the previous idiots,
06:17
first round pick who played this position.
06:19
We're awful at corner.
06:21
We're trying to go do something special here.
06:23
We can fix this right now.
06:25
If a defensive end was available with a similar potential
06:28
impact for the same cost, I probably would have done that.
06:30
Same with a couple other spots.
06:32
So I don't begrudge the attempt at all.
06:34
When you're trying to build on the fly a four time,
06:38
or maybe it's five time pro bowler is not usually available
06:41
for you, you know, sort of with, with,
06:43
with the team that's in salary cap,
06:44
how like the saints are.
06:45
So I don't, I have no issue with the attempt to me.
06:48
Like I I'm with you in the sense that that's very like bad
06:51
management.
06:52
And that's like a very Bruce Allen thing to do to me.
06:54
And I'm not calling Adam Peters that,
06:55
but saying like, we gave this up for him.
06:57
We got to see it through.
06:59
No, you don't.
07:00
You got to be filled a really good team.
07:01
And, and they know better than I do.
07:04
They need, they need to be able to, to say with confidence,
07:07
the reason he did not play well was health and hamstring
07:11
stuff. If that's the case, fine.
07:13
I'm willing to give, to give that, you know, an audience to
07:16
me, I'm nervous about that guy.
07:18
Should they be thinking about 18 million as being as
07:23
valuable as what Lattimore could give them next year?
07:26
Should this even be a consideration where it seems like it's
07:29
not, it seems like they made the decision when they made the
07:31
trade that they're bringing him in for three years,
07:34
whereas they have a get out of jail free card and they can
07:37
get 18 million without a single penalty for one cent this
07:41
off season.
07:42
Is this something they should be thinking about with
07:44
Lattimore? Yes or no?
