Truth Knows No Borders: Teodoro Counters China’s Disinformation, Reaffirms ASEAN Unity and International Law

At the 2025 Shangri-La Dialogue, the Philippines didn’t just speak—it stood firm.
Against China’s loaded narratives and propaganda-laced questions, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. reaffirmed ASEAN unity, upheld UNCLOS, and called out the real threat: coercion disguised as diplomacy.

In this critical moment, the Philippines stood not just for itself—but for the sovereign rights of all smaller states.

00:15During the 2025 Shangri-La dialogue, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.
00:22defended ASEAN Unity International Law and the sovereign rights of nations
00:27against attempts to twist the truth. Previously, he exposed China's propaganda disguised as
00:33questions. This time, he laid out why ASEAN's unity must not be manipulated.
00:39ASEAN should not allow other parties to define what ASEAN's centrality means and not to use ASEAN's
00:50perceived action or inaction as a wedge to drive divisions amongst us. We also had a consensus
01:01that we are involving common positions and the mere fact that we have members in ASEAN with overlapping
01:12claims. Because of our behavior, we trust each other not to take unfair advantage of the situation.
01:23And this is the spirit that must continue in ASEAN. This is the spirit of multilateralism.
01:30It should have no borders. And certainly, as an ASEAN brother, the Philippines will stand up
01:38with that ASEAN brother in time of need in support and in defense of what is international law and unclosed.
01:51No country in the world supports the nine-dash-line claim of China. None have agreed with China and none has
02:03condemned the Philippines for standing up against China in the face of a threat to its territorial
02:10integrity and sovereignty. I, for one, cannot trust a country which imposes, represses its own people.
02:22Let us not forget that while we are members of ASEAN, we are sovereign countries,
02:28each with its own territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Philippines did not stay silent.
02:36It stood for law. It stood for ASEAN. And it stood for the truth.
