The state government says it's making a record investment in the new Bankstown hospital. It's pledging an extra seven hundred million dollars on top of the one-point-three billion already allocated. Construction will start next year with the new hospital expected to be operational in 2031.

00:00It's a $2 billion cash injection to transform Bankstown TAFE into a world-class hospital.
00:08People that live in Bankstown pay their taxes and they deserve a world-class public hospital
00:15and that's exactly what Labor is delivering.
00:17This is the largest ever investment in a public hospital in New South Wales.
00:22A new hospital to replace the ageing Bankstown Lidcombe facility was first promised in 2019
00:27by the previous Liberal National Government.
00:30It allocated $1.3 billion to the project but the current government says that's not enough.
00:36It was not going to deliver the scale of services and it was a problem
00:40because it had been announced four years earlier and cost escalations have risen dramatically.
00:46It's allocated an extra $700 million in this month's state budget,
00:51which includes money to relocate most of the TAFE to Western Sydney University's Bankstown campus.
00:56The five-year contract's been signed there.
00:58We will be considering what the longer-term future holds with the TAFE.
01:01The new hospital will include an emergency department, operating theatres, intensive care,
01:07maternity and mental health services.

01:23Bankstown is one of the fastest growing areas in Sydney.

01:33and the birth rate is higher than the state average, putting more pressure on health care services.
01:39In the last reporting period, more than 14,500 patients presented to Bankstown's emergency department.
01:46Just 59% of them started treatment on time and just over half were able to leave within four hours.
