Sian Gibson, Jean Johansson, Iain Stirling, Rav Wilding

Series 6, Week 9, Day 1

Every day this week, previous contestants Sian Gibson, Jean Johansson, Iain Stirling and Rav Wilding take on a series of quiz rounds selected by the host, quiz legend Richard Osman.

A daily winner is declared following a quickfire round at the end of each show, and the scores are tallied across the week, resulting in an overall champion being crowned on Friday.

Facing their second chance to win a prize, will the winning stars opt for the iconic House of Games dartboard, or will they be tempted with the House of Games fondue set?

00:00Hello, everybody. Welcome to a brand new week on House of Games, a very special week as well.
00:14It's one of our Redemption Weeks, where four players who've been on before,
00:18but just like House of Games at the BAFTAs, didn't quite do enough to win.
00:22We'll meet them in a second. One of them will be walking away with this trophy.
00:26They will finally be a winner. Imagine, what must that feel like?
00:31Shall we meet them? They are Jean Johansson.
00:36Ian Sterling.
00:39Sean Gibson.
00:41And Rad Wilding.
00:45Redemption Week for one of you.
00:48Just grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat. Jean, how are you feeling?
00:52Oh, I've been waiting for this. I was waiting for the phone call, Richard.
00:56To come back and get a prize. I hope the phone do say it's up for grabs this week.
01:00Listen, I can't. There's no spoilers.
01:02OK, OK.
01:03But it'll be... It's never not been up for grabs.
01:06It'd be a weird week if it hadn't.
01:08I like Jean saying she's been waiting for the call.
01:09Did you spend your entire life going around the world showing people properties?
01:13You literally just said, oh, yeah, I've just been in St Lucia.
01:14Yeah, of course you were waiting for our call, Jean.
01:16No, it's good to be here because I need to redeem myself.
01:20That's why I'm sat here.
01:21And in home territory of Glasgow.
01:23And another Scot right next to you, Ian Stirling.
01:27Quite often we like people to come on the show with their partners.
01:29It's really nice.
01:29But you couldn't come on with your partner, Laura, because she was a champion.
01:32So she had to go on the champions.
01:33Yeah, it's not ideal, is it?
01:35That's awkward, isn't it?
01:36Not ideal.
01:37She's been giving me some hints and tips.
01:39Has she?
01:39Oh, yeah.
01:40Believe me.
01:41And as House of Games, general life, lots of tips.
01:45Well, House of Games, general life, in that order, that's the best order for us.
01:48That's the priority we run our lives by.
01:50Sian, now one of you four is going to win a prize this week.
01:53Well, there's going to be five prizes to give away and a trophy.
01:55Shall we take a look at today's prizes?
01:57Oh, yes.
01:58If you win today, you could take home one of these.
02:02You could have the shower curtain, the dartboard, the flowerpot, the cafetiere or the fondue set.
02:09There it is, Jean.
02:10What do you fancy, Sian?
02:11Oh, sorry, Jean, but I really want the fondue.
02:15Well, listen, there's no apologies needed.
02:18We're going to just fight it out.
02:19Well, you know, you've got a good chance because my track record last time I was on was pretty bad.
02:25But, Sian, the good news is everyone's track record last time I was on was pretty bad.
02:27You lose us.
02:28You're a good company.
02:29I mean, I thought this was sort of like...
02:32Redemption.
02:33...narrow defeat, but it turns out we're the worst one.
02:36No, no, you won't.
02:37There's a lot of second places here.
02:39A lot of second places.
02:39Right, OK.
02:40Rav, what did you learn from your first time on House of Games?
02:43Well, I loved it, but I didn't win a prize.
02:45I went home with a prize, but that's because Gary Delaney donated one of his 75 that he won that week.
02:51He gave me one out of pity, I think, so I'd love to win my own.
02:55It is lovely to have all four of you back on this Redemption Week,
02:58and I look forward to giving one of you the trophy on Friday.
03:01Shall we start with round one on Monday, though?
03:03Yes.
03:03Here we go again.
03:04Our first round is...
03:08Rhyme time.
03:09Two questions at a time.
03:10The answers rhyme with each other.
03:11Fingers on buzzers, please.
03:13Here we go.
03:14Here we go.
03:15Somebody is going to be a champion for the first time today.
03:18Who is it going to be?
03:19Is it going to be Gene, Ian, Sian or Rav?
03:22Let's find out.
03:25Monty Python film about someone being mistaken for the Messiah.
03:30And pizza with ham and pineapple.
03:33Yes, that is Rav.
03:37Life of Brian...
03:39Oh, no!
03:40Oh, no!
03:41I was going to say Life of Brian.
03:42Lovely to have you back, Rav.
03:45That is Gene.
03:46Life of Brian, Hawaiian.
03:48Life of Brian, Hawaiian is what we are looking for.
03:51Well played.
03:53Next one.
03:56Capital city of New South Wales in Australia.
04:00And bean-shaped human organ that filters blood.
04:03Yes, Sian.
04:07Um, Sydney Kidney.
04:09Sydney Kidney.
04:09Ooh, correct, Sian.
04:11Oh.
04:12Sydney Kidney.
04:14Next question.
04:15What is this?
04:17And TV drama about builders in Germany starring Jimmy Nailed as Oz?
04:26Yes, Gene.
04:27Courgette Alfi de Zayn Pet.
04:29Courgette Alfi de Zayn Pet.
04:31Yes.
04:31Well played, Gene.
04:33Courgette Alfi de Zayn Pet.
04:35Next one.
04:36Nursery rhyme character who has lost her sheep.
04:43And main job of Dick Van Dyke's character in Mary Poppins.
04:50That's Ian.
04:51Little bull peep, chimney sweep.
04:53Aw.
04:54Well done, Ian.
04:56Absolutely right.
04:58Next questions.
05:01What is this?
05:03And what is this?
05:08Ian.
05:08Milk Float Gravy Boat.
05:10He loves a picture, Ian Sterling.
05:12I like a peck chuck.
05:13He loves a picture.
05:14Milk Float Gravy Boat.
05:16What are the answers to these, please?
05:201984 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a cyborg.
05:24And what is the title of this song?
05:30Yes, Rav.
05:31Terminator Smooth Operator.
05:33Oh.
05:33He's in the game.
05:35He's in the game.
05:36I was thinking of you, Ian.
05:37I was thinking of you.
05:39Thanks, babes.
05:40And both words we would use to describe Rav, I think.
05:43He's like a half Terminator, half Smooth Operator, isn't he?
05:46Terminator by day, Smooth Operator by night.
05:50Final question in this round.
05:53Dawn French's Vicar of Dibley character...
05:57...Christmas Carol about the sleeping baby Jesus.
06:03Ian.
06:05Mrs Granger, away in a manger.
06:07Miss Granger, away in a manger.
06:10No, you can't give it.
06:11You can't give it to this, Jean.
06:13Shall I tell you?
06:15Geraldine Granger, away in a manger.
06:17I attempted to give you...
06:18Oh, I thought it was irreverent.
06:19If you didn't have any points, I'd have given you a point.
06:21I'll happily...
06:22Well, can I have that point?
06:24No, you cannot.
06:25No, you cannot.
06:26That's the end of that round.
06:27Let's take a look at our first leaderboard of the week.
06:32Everyone is off the mark.
06:33Sian and Rav, you have one point each.
06:35Ian and Jean, two points each.
06:37Oh!
06:39Scotland leading from the front here.
06:41Shall we play a pairs game?
06:43Yes.
06:43Our first pairs game this week will be...
06:48Stick the average.
06:50Rav, you're tied third.
06:51Who would you like to play this round with?
06:53I'd like to play with Sian.
06:54Oh, I apologise in advance.
06:57So do I.
06:58What a team that's going to be.
07:01Rav and Sian, you're a team.
07:02And we have Team Scotland up the end here.
07:04Jean and Ian.
07:05Oh, yeah. Here we go.
07:05Can you take your tablets out, please, everyone?
07:07I'll ask you a series of questions.
07:09The answer will be a number.
07:10And I'll take the average of your answers as your team's answer.
07:14Here's your first question.
07:16According to the US Department of Agriculture,
07:18how many pigs are there in the USA?
07:21Wow.
07:22I mean...
07:22That's the sort of question I like.
07:23Where do you start with that?
07:24To the nearest...
07:25The nearest pig, Sian.
07:27Yeah?
07:27Yeah.
07:28Well, whichever team gets closest,
07:29I don't need you to get the exact number.
07:30OK.
07:31OK.
07:32Wow.
07:37OK, everyone's in.
07:38What do you think at home on this one?
07:39That's a tricky one, isn't it?
07:40It could be...
07:41It literally could be any number.
07:43Jean, sort of impossible to know where to begin on this.
07:46No, I mean, you could just put anything in.
07:48So, random answer, I've gone for 10 million.
07:5010 million?
07:51Yeah, that doesn't sound...
07:52Yeah, and a lovely picture.
07:53OK, good. Yeah, and a picture, illustration of a pig.
07:55Ian, up or down from 10 million?
07:57I've gone down.
07:58Yeah.
07:58I've gone 5 million.
08:015 million.
08:02But we're the same sort of idea.
08:03Same hall, but...
08:047.5 million pigs.
08:06I'm happy with that.
08:07I was thinking that's low.
08:07I think it's low when I think about it, Ian.
08:09Why did we go so low?
08:11Sian, what are you saying?
08:13I think I've gone very low.
08:14What have you gone for?
08:17You've gone...
08:17I've put 8.4.
08:188.4 million.
08:20I thought I was being clever by sticking a decimal in.
08:22Rav, up or down from that?
08:24I've got a bit higher, I have to say.
08:27I've actually gone for 45 million.
08:3045 million?
08:31Your average, Sian and Rav, is 26 million.
08:35Sorry, Sian.
08:35No, no, that's good.
08:37I tell you what, should we not even bother looking at the answer?
08:39Should we just give you the point?
08:40Because it sounds right.
08:41Yeah.
08:42Looks really good.
08:42We've got 7 million, we've got 26 million.
08:44How many pigs are there in the USA?
08:4974 million pigs.
08:51Wow.
08:52Point to Rav and Char.
08:53It's all because of your decimal point.
08:55Isn't it?
08:55Next one.
08:57Up to and including the 2021 ceremony,
09:00how many Nobel Prizes have been awarded?
09:06What do we think at home on this one, the Nobel Prizes?
09:09OK, everyone's in.
09:14This is a tricky one, Sian, isn't it?
09:17So, is there only one a year?
09:20Well, there's different prizes.
09:22So there's peace.
09:23Oh.
09:24I was just thinking there was one winner a year.
09:26So did I.
09:27I thought one winner a year.
09:28So what are you saying, Sian?
09:31What's your...
09:31Well, I thought it's probably been going about 81 years.
09:35And I thought there was one a year.
09:37Rav, up or down from that?
09:39I've gone slightly higher.
09:41I was going to do 111.
09:43And then I realised it looked like a jail cell.
09:46So I've changed it to 112.
09:47I mean, there's...
09:48For no other reason than that.
09:50There speaks an ex-copper.
09:51Yeah, exactly.
09:52So that's what I've gone for,
09:54thinking, foolishly, there was one a year for just over 100.
09:58100-odd years.
09:59Yeah, yeah.
09:59OK.
10:00So your average is 96.5.
10:04Jean, did you think there was one a year?
10:05Yeah, I did.
10:06And I thought it might be going for about 70 years,
10:08something like that.
10:0870 years.
10:10Ian, are you the only person here
10:11who didn't think there was only one?
10:13Yeah, but I've messed it up on my own.
10:16Here we go.
10:17We're doing really well, aren't we?
10:19I went for 348.
10:22348.
10:22I thought there was about three a year.
10:23Okey-dokey.
10:24So your average is...
10:26209 for Team Scotland.
10:28Yeah.
10:29There's six a year now, they give away.
10:31It didn't used to be six, but there's six now.
10:34Shall we find out what number have you got at home?
10:36Who has won the point?
10:37How many Nobel Prizes have been awarded?
10:39609, Ian.
10:43Well done.
10:45Closest there.
10:45Yeah, about six a year and been going since 1901.
10:49Final question in this round.
10:51In total, how many laps were there
10:53in the 22 Formula One races contested during the 2021 season?
10:58This is hard.
10:59This is really hard.
11:00It's according to the Formula One website.
11:02How many laps in those 22 races?
11:04OK, everyone's in.
11:11What do you think at home?
11:12F1 fan, do you know the answer to this one?
11:14Ian, what was your workings out?
11:15I reckon it's about 65 laps a race.
11:19There's 22 races.
11:20So I whipped out my long multiplication and I got 1,430 laps.
11:271,430.
11:28Jean, where are you on this?
11:29OK, not too far away from Ian on this.
11:32I'm not so great at math, but, you know, ballpark.
11:34I would like that to be dragged up a little bit, actually.
11:36Right, OK.
11:37So you've done well, actually.
11:37Yeah, that looks handy.
11:39So your average Team Scotland is 1,000.
11:42I think that could be exactly right, you know.
11:44It could be all right.
11:44I think that's buying on the money.
11:46I think it's exactly right.
11:48Yeah.
11:48Sian, are you somewhere around there?
11:50No, because I thought they'd just go round a couple of times.
11:54And then I thought, because I've gone really low
11:57for all the other rounds, I'm going to go higher.
11:59Yeah.
11:59But I've still gone really low.
12:02430, says Sian.
12:04Rav, have you dragged that up, dragged it down?
12:06I'm pleased that I've gone with Sian,
12:08because we clearly have the same mindset.
12:10So I've gone for a very similar number.
12:12I've gone for 40.
12:14So your average Team Rest of the World is 435.
12:19Where are you at home on this one?
12:20Let's find out how many laps were there in the 2021 season.
12:261,200.
12:28Very well played indeed.
12:32Team Scotland, that's the end of that round.
12:33Tablets away, please, everyone.
12:35Let's take a look at our scoreboard.
12:37Two rounds down on Monday's House of Games.
12:42Sian and Rav have two points each.
12:44We have joint leaders, Jean and Ian, four points each.
12:48Three rounds to go on Monday's House of Games.
12:51Redemption week.
12:52Our next round is...
12:53The backwards round.
12:59OK, I'm going to ask you some questions.
13:00I'll ask them backwards.
13:01You have to give me the answers backwards.
13:03So if I asked your name, you would say Sterling Ian.
13:05Yes.
13:06OK.
13:06Buzzers on fingers.

14:03Jean.
14:05Survive will I.
14:06Survive will I, is that right?
14:09Well done.
14:12Very well played, Jean.
14:14Unlucky Ian.

15:28Point to Sian.
15:29Oh, my mind just went weird.
15:32Question final.
15:33Song this of title Thee is what?
15:37Rav.
15:43Happy People Shining?
15:46That's incorrect, Rav.
15:47I'm so sorry.
15:49Sian.
15:50People Happy Shiny.
15:51People Happy Shiny.
15:53Is that right?
15:53No, no, no, it's fine.
15:53I just said the wrong word.
15:59Yeah.
15:59You got the right song.
16:00You got the right song.
16:01I'll give myself a point for that.
16:02By M-E-R, of course.
16:04R-E-N.
16:05That's the end of that round.
16:06And let's take a look at the leaderboard.
16:12Rav, you have two.
16:14Jean and Sian.
16:15Oh, look at Ian.
16:16Five points each.
16:17Ian Sterling.
16:18Losing into the lead.
16:19Seven points.
16:19Runaway.
16:20Usain Bolt.
16:21Back to Ravine.
16:22How about that?
16:23You were saying to me earlier that the first time you came on the show,
16:25you were the first comedian ever not to win.
16:27That's what you told me, Richard.
16:29It was a...
16:29It was a long drive back to Edinburgh that day.
16:34Look at you now.
16:35Look at me now.
16:36Ian, that's what I...
16:37You just have to be surrounded by the right people.
16:39Oh, thanks.
16:40Yeah, I'll take that as a compliment.
16:43I mean, that is setting up a fool, isn't it?
16:45Oh, yeah.
16:46Big tech.
16:47Big time.
16:47That's what I do on these things.
16:49Two rounds to go.
16:50Our next round is...
16:52Where is Kazakhstan?
16:56I wonder if you could take your tablets out, please.
16:58Here we go.
17:00Guys, come on.
17:02Redemption week.
17:03Yeah, we can do this.
17:04There's points up for grabs.
17:05Someone's going to win them.
17:06Whatever happens, someone's getting points in this round.
17:08Right, OK.
17:10Today, it is a map of Britain and Ireland.
17:12I want you to find a series of things, please, on this map.
17:14The first thing I'd like you to find is this.
17:17The location of the viaduct crossed by the Hogwarts Express
17:20in the Harry Potter films.
17:22I don't know what country it's in.
17:23I didn't think it was a real place.
17:25Yeah.
17:27Viaduct.
17:27You know, the big railway bridge that the Hogwarts Express crosses.
17:38OK, everyone's in.
17:39What do you think at home on this one?
17:42Jean, do you have a clue to this one?
17:43Yeah, I think it's in Scotland, isn't it?
17:45Is it?
17:46I think it is.
17:47So, I marked somewhere kind of up north somewhere.
17:51Yeah, up in the Highlands.
17:52That is Scotland.
17:53That's good.
17:54Imagine if it wasn't.
17:55Is it, OK?
17:55Well done, me.
17:58Ian.
17:58Well, it starts in London.
18:01Hogwarts Express.
18:02Hogwarts Express.
18:04The school's in Edinburgh.
18:06OK.
18:06Harry at Watt is the school that it's based on.
18:09And the only big viaduct I know is at Newcastle.
18:12OK.
18:13Coming to the, going over the Tyne.
18:14So, I went for, I don't know where Newcastle is.
18:17OK.
18:18I know it's north, I know it's east,
18:19so I like roughly where Newcastle is.
18:21Yeah, sort of Durham-y, Newcastle-y.
18:25Sian, what were you thinking?
18:26Um, now, my logic was that Harry Potter wasn't real.
18:30Ha-ha!
18:31What?
18:32And so that they weren't real places.
18:35And I thought, where might there be a viaduct that they filmed it on?
18:39Yes.
18:39Yeah.
18:40And I thought Bristol, but I don't really know where Bristol is.
18:44Yeah.
18:44Let's have a look at where you are.
18:45So I just went there.
18:47Yeah, that's Bristol.
18:48Is that Bristol?
18:49Yeah.
18:50Well, I feel like I've won, even if the answer's wrong.
18:53Because you know where Bristol is.
18:53Yeah.
18:54Rav, what was your thinking?
18:56So, I've never read any of these or seen any of the films,
18:59but I've seen the platform in London.
19:02Yes.
19:02Where it starts.
19:03And being a viaduct, I wanted it to cross some water.
19:07Yeah.
19:08So I've just gone from London all the way up north
19:10and I found a big gap where there was some water that needed crossing.
19:13And put my cross there.
19:16So it's up by sort of Carlisle somewhere, I think I've gone.
19:19What kind of Dumfries-y you are there?
19:22I thought it was there's the famous one in Settle.
19:24That's near Carlisle, which I thought it was.
19:26I'm told, however, it is not that.
19:28OK.
19:28So shall we see where it is?
19:30Oh, yes, yes, yes.
19:32Oh, yes, yes, yes.
19:34J.K. Rowling.
19:35It's been fun, isn't it?
19:38It's Glenfinnan Viaduct on the West Highland Line.
19:41Well done if you got that at home.
19:42Well done if you knew the answer there.
19:43Well done if you've been to see that.
19:44So let's take a look at the next thing we need to find.
19:47The village Stilton Cheese is named after.
19:51So where is Stilton?
19:55Hmm.
20:00OK, everyone's in.
20:05What do you think at home on this one?
20:08Ian, do you have any clue?
20:10Not really.
20:11What I've done is, in my children's TV days,
20:13we've done a lot of travel shows.
20:15And generally speaking, the sort of more interesting places
20:19are the very north or the very south.
20:21Oh, yeah.
20:22So I just went very south.
20:24Very south.
20:25Sort of place that would invent a cheese
20:26and that would be the most famous thing about them.
20:29Yeah, kind of Dorset.
20:30Sian, any clue here?
20:31I thought the same as you, Ian.
20:35I thought it would be, like, Somerset-y, Dorset-y, Cornwall-y.
20:39Let's take a look.
20:41Yeah, South Devon.
20:42Mm.
20:42Lovely.
20:43Look at the neck of the woods.
20:45Rav.
20:46Interesting.
20:46I have actually thought the same as both Ian and Sian.
20:50I thought south-west.
20:51South-west as well.
20:54Jean, are you agreeing with everyone?
20:56I thought Stilton might be from Yorkshire.
20:58Ooh.
20:59Ooh.
20:59But I don't know if I've got Yorkshire right on this map.
21:02OK.
21:03I have no idea, basically.
21:05Yeah, sort of, more sort of Cumbria-Lancashire.
21:08All right, OK.
21:08Barely near north Yorkshire.
21:10That's what I was going for.
21:11Yeah, exactly.
21:11What do you think at home?
21:12Do you know this one?
21:13We've got three players here in the West Country
21:16and we've got someone up in the north-west.
21:19Let's find out, shall we?
21:21Where is Stilton and who has scored a point?
21:25Oh.
21:25Ooh.
21:27Hambridgeshire, Stilton.
21:28Wow.
21:28That is posh.
21:29And the closest, I'm being told, is Rav.
21:32Rav, well done.
21:35I'll tell you what, you take any point you can get, right?
21:37Yeah, I'll take it.
21:39Why not?
21:40Last thing we need to find in this round.
21:43The birthplace of the potter, Josiah Wedgwood, in 1730.
21:47I don't know what any of those words are.
21:52Do you want me to start with thee?
21:54I mean, I literally might as well just...
21:57Um...
21:59Wedgwood.
22:02Where is the home of pottery?
22:04Yeah.
22:04I wonder, the UK.
22:05OK.
22:10OK, everyone's there.
22:11And Sian, did you have any thoughts?
22:12Um, I thought, well, I've done one in Bristol, one in Devaney Way,
22:17so I'll just go more up north.
22:19Going more up north?
22:20Um, no reason.
22:21Yeah.
22:21Well, I thought, you know, just...
22:22Um, just why not?
22:23Spread the love.
22:24Yeah.
22:24Yeah.
22:25Cumbria.
22:25Yeah.
22:26Um, Rav, what were you thinking?
22:28OK, so I didn't have a clue, and then I was thinking,
22:32there is a football team that are called the Potters,
22:35and I was trying to think, who are they and where are they based?
22:38Stoke.
22:38And I don't watch football, but I thought of Stoke,
22:41that could be the ones, and then I thought, where's Stoke?
22:44So I've had a guess at where Stoke is,
22:46hoping they're called the Potters,
22:47and hoping that's where he was born.
22:49Gotcha.
22:49Let's take a look at where you are.
22:50That's what I've gone for.
22:51That is not a million miles from Stoke-on-Trent,
22:55I'll say that.
22:56Jean, what were you thinking?
22:58Ah, I thought York might be a good shout.
23:00Let's see where you are.
23:02Yeah, North Yorkshire.
23:04OK.
23:04And Ian?
23:05Um, I'd done a gig once in Harrogate,
23:08and the room was called the Wedgwood Rooms.
23:12Ooh.
23:12Ooh.
23:13So I've...
23:13But then, so I thought I'll do Harrogate,
23:15but I've gone to North,
23:17but I meant to do sort of Leeds-Harrogate way.
23:20Yeah, so, yeah.
23:20A bit high, but I'll take it.
23:22North Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Cumbria,
23:24and you're bang on Stoke-on-Trent there, Rav.
23:27Well, Wedgwood was born in Burslem,
23:30very much the home of the Potteries,
23:32and Burslem is one of the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent.
23:36Oh!
23:37Absolutely bang on.
23:38Fantastic.
23:39Wow, look at that.
23:40Me!
