During a public moment with German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, Donald Trump was presented with a framed birth certificate of his grandfather, Friedrich Trump. Born in 1869 near Brandenburg, Friedrich emigrated to the U.S. in 1885, laying the foundation for the Trump family’s real estate empire. Trump graciously accepted the gift, thanking Merz and joking about where to display it. The moment highlighted Trump’s German heritage and was seen as a symbolic gesture amid international diplomacy.

00:00So, to let you know, this is the birth certificate of Donald Trump's grandfather, born in 1869,
00:24close to Bad Durkheim, and his Christian name was Friedrich.
00:30That's serious German. Bad Durkheim is serious German.
00:37But I want to thank you very much. First of all, I want to thank you for that.
00:42My pleasure. Thank you very much. Fantastic.
00:45We'll put it up in a place of honor.
00:48Well, maybe we can put it up there someplace. It's an honor to have you.
00:55I know the chancellor just won a great election, a very, very strong election, a very respected man.
01:02I can tell you we've been on the phone many times talking about some of the problems of the world outside of Germany.
01:08And it's very sad what's going on. We both feel that way.
01:13What's going on with Russia, Ukraine, and other things we talk about, but Russia, Ukraine in particular.
01:19I'd like to see it end, and maybe it'll end, but we get some news.
01:24There'll be some fighting. Something happened a couple of days ago, and now they do a return.
01:30And, you know, here it goes. It's not good. He's unhappy about it. I'm unhappy about it.
01:35But I think eventually we're going to be successful in stopping the bloodshed.
01:40It's pure bloodshed. Five, six thousand young soldiers a week are being killed.
01:45You know that? There's numbers.
01:47Yeah, we know the numbers.
01:48They're staggering. They're staggering numbers.
01:50But, Chancellor, I just want to congratulate you, and I want to welcome you to the Oval Office.
01:56It's an Oval Office that's in very good shape.
01:59We like fixing things up and having them tippy-top like they have in Germany.
02:03They do that in Germany very much, and we do it here.
02:07We're having a very good run.
02:09I also had a great election, great win, won everything.
02:12Won the popular vote, the all seven swing states, which is a big deal.
02:17It's pretty unusual to do that.
02:19And we have a great mandate from the people, and part of our mandate is we're going to have a great relationship with your country.
02:25So I just want to thank you very much for being here.
