00:00U.K. Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds is keen to use e-gates as soon as possible.
00:08The minister believes that it is legally possible to implement the faster system of passport checks
00:13for British nationals traveling to and from EU member states.
00:18And this following the deal struck last month at the EU-UK summit.
00:23Asked by Euronews whether 2025 would be the year for people to use e-gates for their summer holidays,
00:30Reynolds was hopeful, even if the implementing details are still pending.
00:35We hope it is as soon as possible because part of the agreement is the commission saying
00:38there's no legal impediment to the use of e-gates.
00:41It is used in some countries.
00:43Obviously, it's got huge efficiency advantages from using.
00:46Reynolds is confident that the May agreement reached with the EU will be able to stand up
00:51against future governments, dismissing opposition arguments against the agreement
00:56from the U.K.'s conservative and reformed parties.
00:59Reynolds believes there will always be people who want to move on.
01:04In terms of the media reaction, I'm absolutely confident that this agreement
01:11is in the best interest of the U.K., it's in the best interest of the EU as well.
01:15But I think there is a coalition we can build that doesn't want to look to the past.
01:19One of the contested points in the new Labour UK-EU reset last month
01:24was an agreement settling access to fisheries for the next 12 years.
01:29Reynolds defends it.
01:32Let's not forget on fishing.
01:34There is no less access, no diminishing of the U.K. position from what is already the case.
01:40And actually what is already the case is better than it had been in some previous years.
01:44Agreement on issues like e-gates and fisheries are an example of a strengthening cooperation
01:51following a broader deal reached in May, the first since the U.K. left the EU bloc in 2020.
