At a press briefing on Tuesday, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries was asked about crypto regulations.
Transcript
00:00I'll go to the back row.
00:01The crypto industry spent heavily in 2024 in a lot of key races across the country,
00:06and they're expected to do similarly in 2026.
00:08You've seen some internal divisions among Democrats in the Senate and the House around this crypto.
00:15Are you concerned at all at the spending and its potential influence on legislation?
00:20Well, crypto spent both for Democrats and Republicans.
00:24Certainly that was the case in the House of Representatives,
00:26because there are allies of the crypto industry on both sides of the aisle in the House,
00:32and that was reflected in the crypto industry's engagement.
00:35I think the best thing that can happen in terms of moving forward
00:38is that we arrive at a bipartisan solution in terms of the legislation that is pending in the Congress,
00:49because that's the only way for it to be sustainable.
00:53When you make an issue partisan, and at this point crypto is not partisan,
00:59Donald Trump is a separate problem that has to be addressed.
01:05You know, the real-time corruption in terms of the friends and family program
01:09to monetize Trump's office and enrich parts of the family, in part by using crypto,
01:18that is a problem that has to be addressed decisively.
01:23And we're committed to doing that as Democrats.
01:26But when you take away that piece of it, which is a very important piece,
01:33I think substantively, figuring out how we arrive at a bipartisan resolution
01:42of the crypto issues that are currently pending before Congress
01:47is what will best serve the American people
01:50and also best serve an appropriately regulated industry
01:56that allows for innovation but also has guardrails to protect the American consumer.
02:05Thanks.
02:05A lot of questions today.
