'The Wire' Actor Tray Chaney Says Son Out of ICU After Surviving Tornado That Destroyed House

Actor Tray Chaney saw his son celebrate his 19th birthday from a hospital bed in the ICU this Sunday but he had a glimmer of good news on Tuesday ... telling TMZ his son's on the mend!!!

00:09yeah i'm in locust grove henry county yeah well that's that's where i lived

00:15yeah lived um well you survived a tornado um i see i see you've been praising god every step

00:24of the way your wife and your son they're recovering as well uh can you run us through

00:30those events the other day i'm proud to announce that um malachi is in stable condition and after

00:37spending six days in the icu at grady hospital he's now moved to a regular room so he's not in icu no

00:47more um but it's going to be a long journey and a long road to recovery we're not out of the

00:58hospital he's still in the hospital but he's in another room because right now with the broken

01:04ribs with every bone in his face fractured we're talking about head we're talking about

01:11the upper body cuts all over his upper body he didn't have no cuts on his legs or anything

01:18because he had on sweatpants thank god um but

01:23we went to wool with a tornado you know and came out on top father and son and malachi cheney is

01:33he's my hero and in in in the tough part is watching him be stable and respond the best way he can

01:43and every single day he doesn't know what happened we're not telling him you were thrown 300 feet out

01:51of a out of our house we we no longer have a house and we almost died you know but

01:58i just i i i thank jehovah man i thank jehovah god he had to spend his 19th birthday which was

02:08june 1st in icu man we had a great day it was a great day leading up to uh 230 we went we went to

02:18get something to eat around 230 you know after we left ticket between 12 and 1 and um went in the house

02:27and malachi just doing what he regularly do man he like dad showing me videos on the gram and

02:34and talking about how much fun he was having in college and he just got his license you know

02:40last year and he we were talking about you know the cars that he whatever car he wanted wanted you

02:46know he got a job and and then he was just like dad why i look so gloomy outside that's exactly what

02:53he said i said man i don't know it's been raining all day malachi's birthday was june 1st sunday so

02:59um we had a trip plan to go back home to where we from washington dc to like surprise the family my

03:05niece graduated and we just was talking like all right man i'm gonna go pack and i sat on my bed

03:10at like three o'clock you know because i'll never forget sitting on my bed just i was gonna pack and

03:19then i was gonna take a little nap before my wife got home so we could go to airport and um

03:23i heard the wind but it just it just didn't sound like wind it was just like

03:31like a you know i'm saying you you hear that and you like all right well i don't know what that is

03:37then the rain the rain didn't sound like rain if you can understand what i'm saying and uh

03:46it's more like a hail sound more like more hard it was more like a hail sound and it sound like

03:52a train was coming was in my backyard

03:56and um i just remember turning to my right and my walls and my tvs and my dressers

04:07and my bed turned upside down and i levitated in the air

04:12and um

04:15so i i levitated in the air

04:20and i just remember covering covering covering like this yelling my son's name out next thing

04:29you know i just i woke up with my face in the mud with covers wrapped around my body but my face was

04:38in the mud and i felt like i was suffocating so i was just trying my best to like get out of the

04:44covering like you were trapped in the covers and it was like i was trapped in the cover yeah it was

04:49like it was over me but with my face in in mud and dirt and um when i finally

04:58when when the cover finally came off

05:03i looked to my left and i and i looked at nails from bricks

05:10my tv my my refrigerator my kitchen and my roof was gone

05:20and

05:24and i jumped up i jumped up and i said where's my son my head was bleeding this i came away with

05:32a scratch on my head but it was a knot

05:34and it was bleeding and and and and i gotta really really thank my neighbors because every neighbor

05:42in my neighborhood

05:46was was was was flying to just come to my aid and when the neighbors got there i jumped up and um

05:58i said where's my son at and my neighbors like trey you gotta relax because

06:02you gotta relax because you know i don't know if you understand what just happened but

06:08you a tornado just just just took you took your house but i wasn't thinking about nothing i wasn't

06:16thinking about nothing i was thinking about malachi i think you had a lot of adrenaline pumping you know

06:23my house came down my house is done nothing

06:28so my next door neighbor my house was the house on the end so my next door neighbor

06:40the windows in his house the roof of another neighbor's house as i'm remembering

06:46was was damaged but i'm sitting i'm sitting in

06:51a neighbor's house right now my man dre from game changers magazine network

06:58he said a brick from my house flew in his house his window is damaged another horrific

07:06picture of my wife getting out of her truck me on the ground from vomiting at least three times my body's in

07:15shock i'm looking for my son i can't find him and me locking eyes with her

07:22and watching her collapse in my neighbor's arms luckily my neighbors were surrounded around her

07:26when she pulled up because i don't know my wife could have fell out hit her head

07:30whatever the woods all the way in the back of my house

07:33three of my neighbors trey we found him we found him he's right here he's right here

07:43i said is he breathing yes he's breathing because i couldn't i couldn't go over there i couldn't i i

07:52i couldn't yet by that time the paramedics were running over there with with what they ran over there with and um

08:06watching them watching me hear my son scream it was it was a great sign that he was alive he was living

08:15but then watching him watching them push him and put him up in an ambulance while me and my wife was standing there

08:25how much distance would you estimate he got your son got thrown from the house it was it was 300 feet

08:33that's what that's what i was told from the paramedics from the police and every day you know you

08:40you hear people be strong be strong but it's like be strong but i'm human you know i'm saying like

08:50period so so so even it's cool you know yeah all right i'm strong i'm i'm i'm i'm one of god's

08:59kids you know i'm god's child but at the same time if if you ain't waking up under no house with no

09:07bricks on your back and your son ain't been or your loved one ain't been throwing 300 feet

09:12i can't really talk to you about nothing out of the shack too man shack shaquille o'neal man he he did a

09:19video for malachi yesterday man and like i said malachi stable he in a lot of pain so he might be on

09:25the medication but during this time he was able to open his eyes a little bit he like dad i love you

09:31dad i said kyle i got something for you uncle shack shack got on there man i showed kyle that and my son

09:38smiled i know what it did to him i know what it did to him his smile just lit up shout out to the

09:46president of savannah state university his school his college day it and like i said man this is it's only

09:55six days me my wife aisha and my son malachi we got a long long we got a lifetime to go because i don't

10:04know i don't know what's what's what's headed or what's coming or and i'm not trying to figure it out
