00:00There are two kinds of folks who sit around thinking about how to kill people, psychopaths and mystery writers.
00:05I'm the kind that pays better. Who am I?
00:07I'm Rick Castle.
00:08Castle.
00:09Castle.
00:10I really am ruggedly handsome, aren't I?
00:12Every writer needs inspiration, and I've found mine.
00:14Detective Kate Beckett. Beckett. Beckett. Nicky Heath.
00:17The character he's basing on you.
00:18And thanks to my friendship with the mayor, I get to be on her case.
00:21I'd be happy to let you spank me.
00:23And together we catch killers.
00:25Make a pretty good team, you know, like Starsky and Hutch.
00:27Turner and Hooch.
00:28You do remind me a little of Hoot.
00:50Tell me, Sia, what do I hold in my hand now?
00:54You're holding...
01:02A wallet.
01:03Yes! Incredible! Ten out of ten!
01:06What's going on?
01:07Graham's teaching me how to read minds.
01:09And she is a natural. Much better than you were at her age.
01:12And I'm very proud. Why this sudden foray into the mysterious rooms?
01:16It's a genealogy project for school. Half of the assignment is to collect stories from family members.
01:21I had no idea that Graham Spokes had a mind reading act on Coney Island.
01:25No, they were very famous in that day.
01:27I love all their codes. How tell me means wallet and reveal to me means a pair of glasses.
01:33Yes. You come from a long line of hucksters and charlatans. Myself included.
01:37But we have high hopes for you.
01:42That must be Beckett.
01:44How did you know?
01:46It's after ten. On a weekday.
01:48Who else is it gonna be?
01:50Oh, she is good.
01:52Brilliant.
01:53Castle?
01:55I knew it was you.
01:56Victim of his Hispanic male. Mid-thirties.
01:59Local spotted him when he was out walking his dog around 10.30.
02:02His wallet's missing. If it was a robbery, I bet my weak salary that the killer didn't know who was rolling.
02:08You ID'd him without a wallet?
02:10Unfortunately.
02:11You know the guy?
02:12Everybody in New York knows the guy.
02:15Canovega. The baseball player.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Canovega? Are you sure?
02:20He was my first round draft pick in my fantasy league three years running.
02:23314 batting average, four gold gloves, and one championship ring.
02:30I almost caught one of his homers once.
02:33He just came to the States from Cuba, and my dad took us out to the bleachers over at Shea.
02:37I didn't know you were a baseball fan.
02:38It's genetic. On my dad's side.
02:41He's been taking me to games since I was three.
02:43Yeah, mine too.
02:44How about you, Castle?
02:46Your dad a baseball fan?
02:48I really can't say.
02:49Castle is famously fatherless.
02:51Were you adopted or something?
02:52No.
02:53Then how do you...
02:54It's complicated.
02:55It's not that complicated.
02:57Someone used his head for batting practice.
02:5936 ounces to the back of the head.
03:01By the look of the spatter, he was hit multiple times.
03:04Time of death?
03:05From his temperature, I'd say two, maybe three hours at the most.
03:09What's with all this bruising?
03:10Post-mortem.
03:11From the balls.
03:12Pitching arm.
03:13Ran for a while until he was dead.
03:15So, you'd think a guy like Cano Vega would have a batting cage in his basement.
03:19What would he be doing in a sketchy neighborhood in Spanish Harlem this hour of the night?
03:25Maybe because it's Cano Vega Field.
03:27Local uniforms said they'd built it for the community.
03:30Wanted to give something back.
03:31So, our killer hit him from here.
03:35And he got blood on his shoe.
03:38Have CSU run a sweep.
03:39See if anything tracked outside of the field.
03:41All right.
03:42So, your dad.
03:44What is it?
03:45Mama Mia thing?
03:46Early 70s?
03:47Free love?
03:48Yeah, I bet your mom was kind of wild back in the day.
03:51You really need to stop talking now.
03:53Sorry.
03:54Dad.
03:55A big athletic guy is swinging a two and a half foot club.
04:04He couldn't have been that easy to kill.
04:06Unless he didn't see you coming.
04:08On behalf of the Vega family, I want to thank all of Cano's loyal fans for their love and support.
04:14In this time of great sadness, we ask that you please respect his family's privacy.
04:19Mr. Fox, who else?
04:20Twelve years of marriage.
04:22All I want from me is a sound bite.
04:24I'm very sorry about your loss, Mrs. Vega.
04:27Do you know why he'd be in the park last night?
04:29Sometimes he'd go there to blow off steam, but...
04:32Look back at Mr. Castle, Tommy Zane, Cano's old teammate.
04:35It'd be hard to be a New Yorker.
04:36Not no freight train Tommy Zane.
04:38So, you guys got any leads?
04:39We're looking into it.
04:41Mr. Zane, you said that Mr. Vega was at your club last night.
04:44Our club, actually.
04:45Cano and I owned it with a couple of other players.
04:47Do you know about what time?
04:48Dropped by about 7.
04:49Left about 7.30.
04:51I didn't really see him.
04:52I was with a friend.
04:54Excuse me.
04:55Yes?
04:56Mrs. Vega, do you know of anyone who would have wanted to hurt your husband?
04:59It used to be everybody loved him.
05:01Especially in the Cuban community.
05:03What changed?
05:04The trip.
05:05A few months ago, the Cuban tourism department approached him.
05:10They wanted Cano to be the poster boy for the new Cuba.
05:13You risk your life to escape Castro's Cuba.
05:15Why would you go back to visit?
05:17While Cano was down there, the locals treated him like a hero.
05:20Their hero.
05:21At a state dinner, Castro came over and shook his hand.
05:24When he got home, his friends called him a traitor for going.
05:27Said he was a lap dog for Fidel.
05:29The same people who cheered when he built that ballpark came up and told him to go to hell.
05:32Did he get any threats?
05:33You bet he got threats.
05:35Hundreds of them.
05:37And all of them courtesy of Alfredo Quintana.
05:40Detective Bobby Fox, Cano's agent.
05:42Nice to meet you.
05:43Detective, could you do something to get those jackals and their cameras away from Mrs. Vega's house?
05:48I'll see what I can do.
05:49Thanks.
05:50Who's Alfredo Quintana?
05:51He's the guy who killed Cano Vega.
05:53Thanks, Carlos.
05:54Hey.
05:55Alfredo Quintana.
05:56J.D., PhD, and editor of Una Nueva Esperanza, a newspaper published by his foundation primarily
06:08for the Cuban community.
06:09This is his column from two weeks ago.
06:11Cano Vega must pay?
06:13The article's about how Vega betrayed the Cuban community by shaking hands with the monster
06:17who butchered thousands of their relatives.
06:20Quintana says if Vega's going to embrace the brutal regime he once escaped,
06:25he would do well to be reminded of its barbarous cruelty.
06:29Well, that sounds like a threat to me.
06:32I wasn't threatening him.
06:33You turned the local Cuban community against him.
06:37He turned his back on his people when he gave Castro's nod of approval.
06:40If you want me to be sorry about what I wrote because he's dead, I'm not.
06:45I wrote the truth.
06:46Are you sure that's all you did?
06:48You said it yourself in your editorial, Vega should pay.
06:51It's a free country, isn't it?
06:53I'm entitled to express my opinion.
06:56Your foundation, Cubans First, is on East 98th Street.
07:00That's three blocks away from the field where Vega's body was found.
07:05You think I had something to do with his murder?
07:07Well, the pen is mightier than the sword, but a baseball bat can be pretty effective, too.
07:11Where were you last night between 7 and 10 p.m.?
07:14I was at home with my wife.
07:16Mm.
07:17Wives make such convenient alibis.
07:19My sons were there as well.
07:21As well as my brother.
07:23Do you have anyone who wasn't blood-related?
07:25A notary, perhaps?
07:27Look, what Cano Vega did is inexcusable.
07:33But I am not a murderer!
07:35Are you sure about that, Mr. Quintana?
07:37You incited an entire community against him.
07:40So, from where I'm standing, you might not have swung that bat.
07:43But that doesn't mean that you didn't kill him.
07:51Well?
07:52We'll check his alibi, but my gut tells me it's not him.
07:54We should get a warrant.
07:55Run his subscribers against any hate mail that the Vegas might have gotten.
07:58You sure you got no cop in the castle family tree?
08:00No, us castles are mostly con artists and circus folks, sir.
08:03No, I think there's a little cop in there somewhere.
08:07Con artists and circus people, huh?
08:09Yep, and mind readers.
08:11Really?
08:12So tell me what I'm thinking.
08:14Ah!
08:15You're...
08:16You're thinking you don't care and you want me to stop talking.
08:20Ooh, that's uncanny.
08:22It's in the blood.
08:23Yo, Beckett.
08:24Yeah?
08:25Just got back from CSU.
08:26They managed to track the blood trail from the killer's shoe across the park.
08:30It dead-ended at the curb.
08:31So our killer was driving a car?
08:33Yeah.
08:34The area was a little muddy, so we were able to pull a partial on the tire.
08:36And you make a model?
08:37Better.
08:38The tire marks are distinctive.
08:39They've been patched in two spots.
08:41Now those same tire tracks match a car that was tagged in an aggravated assault last year.
08:45The assault was committed with a baseball bat by one Anton Wade.
08:49Lone sharking, blackmail.
08:51Plus assault with a deadly weapon and two AMBs.
08:54Assault and batter.
08:55Oh, no.
08:56Right.
08:57The guy's been seriously bad, too.
08:58Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
08:59Oh, I'm sensing something here that this guy might just be our killer.
09:04Mr. Wade, we have you at the baseball field.
09:05Your car was at the crime scene, not to mention.
09:19Your unfortunate history of hitting people with baseball bats.
09:20All of that's enough to send you away.
09:21So you can play dumb or you can play ball.
09:25Pun intended.
09:26All right, I was there, but I didn't kill him.
09:27He was already dead.
09:28You're just paying the corpse a visit.
09:29He called me and asked me to meet up with him.
09:30And when I got there, I knew how it looked.
09:31So I bounced the hell up out of there.
09:32Why would Vega call you?
09:33He wanted to make a payment on his loan.
09:34He always paid the same way.
09:35Cash in a plain envelope.
09:36And I got the best deal.
09:38I got the best deal.
09:39I got the best deal.
09:40You're going to get insurance.
09:41I'm not.
09:42I'm not.
09:43I got the best deal.
09:44I was going to get insurance.
09:45I got the best deal.
09:46I'm not.
09:47I just got the best deal.
09:48You're not.
09:49I was.
09:50I was.
09:51I was.
09:52I was.
09:53I was.
09:54I was.
09:55You're.
09:56I was.
09:57I was.
09:58I was.
09:59I was.
10:00in a plain envelope i saw it on him i took it the guy's a multi-millionaire you're a petty loan shark
10:06what's he doing borrowing money from you my business you don't ask you don't tell how much
10:11money did you borrow came to me a couple weeks back needed 200 grand in my experience if you
10:18need that kind of coin he got himself into some real bad trouble the kind of trouble that gets
10:24you killed or maybe he couldn't pay your vague and you pulled a little untouchables de niro on his
10:30head guy owing you money killing him ain't gonna get you paid you take his bling you jack him for
10:35his ride you maybe even bust his kneecaps but he made his last installment vega made his big we were
10:41good vega's wife didn't know anything about the 200 grand it doesn't make sense with his assets a guy
10:51like cano vega get a loan from any bank in new york city so why go to a loan shark for two hundred
10:55thousand dollars because bank loans take time loan sharks give it to you right away maybe he needed
10:59the money fast maybe he needed to keep quiet loan sharks don't require paperwork credit checks
11:04maybe he didn't want his wife to know vega didn't want his wife to know why he was going to cuba either
11:09so you think his trip and the money are related well a week after he gets back he suddenly needs 200
11:14thousand stands to reason that the two were connected somehow yo just finished a search
11:20of wade's apartment we found a match to the partial shoe print yeah but here's the weird thing
11:25it tested positive for blood on the soul but negative for blood on the rest of the shoe and
11:28negative for cleaning agents if wade killed vega then his shoe would have been covered in blood so
11:33wade's telling the truth he shows up after the murder tracks some blood outside of the park while the
11:39real murderer gets blood on top of his shoe and leaves little or no trail behind let's find out why
11:45vega comes back from cuba and suddenly needs 200 grand okay so where do you want to start you guys
11:51look into vegas financial see if we missed anything castle and i'll start with cuba cuba good idea i'll
11:56bring the mojitos you get the beach towels oh i don't know castle me in a swimsuit under the hot
12:02blistering sun i'd be happy to rub lotion on you that's okay i was actually thinking of something a
12:08little bit more local like the man who arranged the entire trip to cuba bobby fox his agent that's
12:16a good idea but the lotion offer still stands no thank you very soft hands
12:24what is it with professional sports i mean even the agencies are on steroids well fox's client list is
12:31a veritable who's who of star athletes five percent of their endorsements and salaries
12:35you could pay for half of lower manhattan did you just use the word veritable yes i did sexy you
12:41should hear me say fallacious bobby fox agency please hold can i help you i need to see mr fox do you
12:46have an appointment i think he can squeeze me in rick rick castle hey skipper i have not seen you
12:55since the big move how are you joe pretty awful i just can't believe this whole vega thing i know it's sad
13:02and you two were friends i'm sorry yeah he was a great kid uh he had the ability to be a cuban
13:08roberto clemeni it's just been very sad we're actually here to talk to mr fox about it this is
13:12detective kate beckett hi beckett kate detective thank you very nice meeting you
13:22well good luck on the case and i'll say a prayer for you guys thanks
13:25by the way say hi to mom for me okay will do joe okay
13:34smooth that was joe freaking tori i gotta call my dad the office is over yeah his office is
13:42he was a good guy cano he built that field because he wanted to give back
13:48i think that's why he went to cuba he wanted to see if he could do something good but i guess things
13:53hadn't changed as much as he had hoped for what happened he had spent some time in nevada with
13:58the people he came back pretty upset and he told me to give the tourism guys back their signing bonus
14:05first time i ever let a client give money back and i figured you know cano was reneging on a military
14:12dictatorship these are not the people you want angry at you especially having defected from them 18
14:18years ago he risked his life to leave why would you want him to be the poster boy for the new cuba no
14:24i didn't i was just as surprised as anyone that he wanted to do it after everything i did to get him
14:30out back then have you heard this story no you're gonna like this castle it's like one of your books
14:36it was the 92 olympics the cubans had just won gold in barcelona thanks mostly to cano and i wanted to
14:44get him to the states to play in the bigs convincing him was the easy part getting him onto my plane
14:52that was the hard part we had to get past coaches minders and finally el pulpo head of state security
15:03because he had his tentacles around everybody and just as we thought we were home free boom
15:08boom el pulpo we were caught sunk a firing squad i kid you not was waiting for that kid back in havana
15:17you know how i got us past el pulpo rolex
15:24i gave him my shiny new rolex and he just looked the other way
15:30just goes to show you every socialist is a capitalist when backs are turned is it possible that he took the
15:36cuba job because he needed the money well it's possible yes god knows those guys know how to blow
15:41through money and plus he has that club with tommy that's just a money pit so in regards to the cuba
15:48job who else went on this trip well a couple of low-level cuban diplomats i'll have cynthia get you a list
15:55so what made him go to cuba and then what made him change his mind maybe vega worked for the state
16:01department maybe he was sent to shake hands with fidel in a secret attempt to release a biotoxin into
16:07his system well the russians sprayed sushi with radioactive poloni but what's more far-fetched
16:13well i just met joe tory so i guess anything's possible
16:18beckett cause of death was cerebral hemorrhaging as expected any way to estimate the height of the
16:25attacker based on the angle of the blows normally yes but in this case your attacker's first swing
16:30landed a little south of his head how far south enough to make him a soprano oh you should want a
16:38cup lacerations around the patella suggest mr vega was on his knees when he was hit on the head
16:45so our attacker could have been anyone man woman or child that's not why i called among all the fresh
16:52bruising we also found significant subdermal bruises that weren't quite as fresh the contusions were
17:00all fist-sized he was in a fight a couple days ago what's the shape right here he was wearing a ring
17:09not just any ring championship ring left hand ring finger just like his old teammate freight
17:17trained tommy zane you know mom's family goes all the way back to the mayflower water persecution
17:31complex is genetic hey those are my genes you're talking about too well look on the bright side
17:36now that you know you're genetically predisposed you can seek early treatment prevent future outbreaks
17:42doesn't it bother you that you don't know who your dad is no why does it bother you it's like
17:51i have this family tree and there's a whole chunk of it missing there's a whole part of my history that
17:55doesn't even exist i mean really how could gran not know my first year of college i uh went to a party
18:03met this girl allison in the space of six hours we met we talked we danced we fell in love
18:09next morning she was gone i spent a year trying to find her but i never learned her last name it's not
18:16a week that goes by i don't think about her your gram told me that she loved a lifetime the night she met
18:22him don't you feel like you're missing out not knowing no oh no that's the beauty of the mystery
18:29right now my father could be an astronaut a pirate a humanitarian winner of the nobel prize i mean what
18:36one man could live up to all that do you think he ate whipped cream out of a can yes and he invented
18:42whipped cream dad you're gonna spoil your dinner it is my dinner no
18:48mr zane detective beckett mr gasser you're in a festive mood tonight mr zane honoring the dead
19:05celebrating a life the way can i would have won yes nothing says i'm grieving like an appletini
19:12you must be the forgive and forget type mr zane especially after that beating that you gave can
19:17a couple nights ago who are you talking about we found the bruises left on vega's body from where
19:21you hit him including the imprints left by your championship ring 25 guys have this ring do they
19:27all wear it on the left hand ring thing some of them yeah do they all have abrasions on that finger
19:31that are consistent with assault what happened mr zane was cano tired of dumping money into this club
19:37he didn't care about the money then what was it his wife his wife you and she were no but he thought
19:51maggie was upset said she thought cano was having an affair and wanted to know if i'd seen him down
19:55here at the club with anybody what did you tell her i told her no of course was that the truth look i've
20:00been through this before cano was having some kind of crisis he wasn't gonna leave her so why tell
20:05her the truth so vega was having an affair i've seen him with a girl young cuban and i figure after
20:11his visit he was missing home anyway he saw me leaving his house that night when he asked maggie
20:15why i was there she got evasive so naturally he thought she was having an affair of a room came after
20:21me swinging took a couple shots to his ribs to calm him down enough before i could tell him the truth
20:26this girl that he was dating do you remember her name no he never told me your name but i might have a
20:31picture on my phone what is it with professional athletes and politicians that they just can't keep
20:38it in their pants they're just overgrown teenagers with delicate little egos it's not that deep it's
20:43just simple math they just have more opportunity what do you say men are dogs no the greater the
20:49opportunity the greater the likelihood which means the two of you have nothing to worry about ryan has
20:53nothing to worry about hey cano vega on the other hand his wife said that he changed when he got back
20:58from cuba maybe it wasn't cuba maybe it was the girl that could explain the 200 grand maybe needed
21:03for the girl and why he needed to borrow money from a loan shark without her finding out but maggie
21:08vega did find out so she decides she's not going to take it anymore she considers divorce but thought
21:14about the endless hours of scrutiny the public humiliation of the media not to mention that she'd
21:18only get half assuming there's no prenup but if she kills him she gets everything she knows where he's
21:24going to be alone at night she goes there he trusts her lets his guard down she moves in close she
21:33smiles picks up a bat thinks of everything that he's done to her starts with the family jewels and ends
21:39with the family fortune this is crazy why would i kill my husband because you thought he was having
21:50an affair you know how it doesn't matter how we know what matters is that you didn't tell us it was a
21:57private matter between cano and me it's also motive mrs vega where were you on the night of your
22:02husband's murder at home alone you can check the security tapes if you want so it's true then he
22:11was seeing someone else we don't know that for sure i do he was in love with her
22:22her name is laura mi carino it means my love who is she i don't know i've torn this house upside down
22:33looking for a clue that knows the only thing i've found 216 that's the day before the murder yeah he
22:40went into the city that day didn't get home until 10 30. that's what i knew mrs vega this woman is
22:46possibly involved in your husband's murder why didn't you tell us this before because i i just
22:53didn't want it to be true home security videos confirmed mrs vega's story and csu tested negative
23:00for blood at tommy zane's place where are we on the girl just finished coming through vega's internet
23:05records there are no im's emails or internet browser searches connecting him in any way shape or form to
23:10a laura phones are a dead end too no one who called or was called by vega in the last two months
23:15remembers him mentioning anyone named laura well for a guy who's supposedly in love he doesn't
23:19do a very good job keeping in touch with his girl some guys are just hopeless hey honey yeah
23:25i was just thinking about you thought i'd call you well i just wanted to call to say i miss you
23:29yeah some guys are just pathetic don't be jealous he still loves you vega met with her the day
23:36before he died so let's put photos out to all precincts and have uniforms canvas the area around
23:40the field maybe somebody saw her the night that he was killed thank you yes sir how we doing
23:45on the cuba angle nothing yet why just got a call from the loo over in union city new jersey vega was
23:50involved in a shouting match at the restaurant little havana with one of their regulars apparently
23:54the cops were called in to break it up why wasn't there an incident report cops kept it quiet at the
23:58time at the request of the cuba consulate because of vega no because of who vega was fighting with
24:03mario sanchez head of the cuba consulate new york he was one of the diplomats that took vega to cuba
24:08what did they fight about i don't know but seeing today we're in cuba together i suggest you find out
24:23on the night of the 17th i was here at the consulate you don't really think i killed can
24:32of vega do you given his change of heart in cuba i can't imagine that the two of you were the best of
24:36friends you could say the same thing about most of the cuban community here yes but how many of them
24:41ended up dead after fighting with you in a restaurant i was minding my own business vega was the one who
24:47decided to pick a fight with him why i was in charge of his schedule in cuba i guess he didn't
24:53like to be told what to do or where to go sounds like you kept him on a pretty tight leash we did a
24:58counter-revolutionary the courtesy of allowing him back on our soil we weren't about to just let him
25:03wander around so you would know better than anyone else what vega did on his trip it's my job everyone
25:09we spoke to about vega says he came back from cuba a different man what happened to him down there
25:15he was very emotional the whole time he was there talking to the locals feeling sorry for
25:23them because they were poor he was rich truth is he felt guilty when vega returned he borrowed two
25:29hundred thousand dollars in cash is it possible that he was trying to funnel money to the island
25:33help some of the locals out maybe not on my watch yeah you can't have that rich people sharing their
25:38wealth that's like socialism please the truth is the kind of vega like all americans was
25:44spoiled when the poverty was before his eyes it's an unspeakable tragedy and then i decide out of
25:51mind he didn't know that i was aware but do you want to know the thing that interested vega most about
25:58cuba a girl what girl he met a lot of locals kissed a lot of babies i can only assume it was a pretty young
26:10thing he made while he was touring the island do you know her name lara her name was lara
26:19so vega fell in love with a girl in cuba if you take sanchez's word we couldn't have just pulled
26:24the name laura out of thin air according to the note that the wife found vega and laura were supposed
26:29to meet the night before he was murdered now how are they supposed to do that if she's stuck in cuba if
26:34she's stuck on the island how did she end up in that photo with vega at his club and there has to be an
26:39explanation that makes us all make sense there is the woman standing next to vega in the picture
26:44is not lara a resident near the ballpark where vega was killed i deed her her name is anna
26:49anna rivera she's a waitress in the neighborhood uniforms are bringing her in now what's her
26:54connection to vega cuba she escaped six months ago we met at a bar where i work near his field
27:04he heard i just come over from cuba last year and he invited me out for drinks did you know he was
27:09married it wasn't like that he just wanted to talk about home he missed it i think that's why he wanted
27:16to go you were photographed with him after the trip did he still want to just talk yes he wanted to talk
27:24about my trip here from cuba it was like he was obsessed he wanted to know how i got out and what did
27:30you tell him i know what did you tell mr vega i said my family knew a man if if you pay him lots
27:41of money mi cariรฑo comes and takes you to america mi cariรฑo his boat it takes you to jamaica and then
27:50you fly to america it's important that you fly because if you come by boat then they can send you back
27:57look that's the wet foot dry foot policy vega was looking for a way to get his new girlfriend out of
28:02cuba mi cariรฑo on 2 16 8 30 pm it looks like he succeeded mi cariรฑo to jamaica 2 16 which means
28:10she arrived on the 17th that's the same day vega died that can't be a coincidence ana you told mr vega
28:17how to get in touch with the man who got you out of cuba yes he runs a newspaper
28:22a new esperanza on east 98 alfredo quintana the editor
28:33he lied to us
28:41by first you accused me of killing vega then you're saying that i'm helping him so maybe you guys should
28:48make up your mind well actually we made up our minds once we saw the two hundred thousand dollars
28:52in your bank account that's the exact amount canto vega borrowed from a loan shark since what you were
28:57doing was illegal he didn't want there to be any record of it you know i don't know what you're talking
29:01about
29:08these aren't my accounts this is the foundation's account my name isn't even on them which is why
29:14you hid the money there to make it harder for us to find these were charitable contributions where's the
29:20girl what girl mr quintana you and your foundation are facing human smuggling charges do you really want
29:29me to add obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting a murderer to that you like the press don't
29:36you how are you gonna like being linked to cano vega's murder you know what they'll see that i saved
29:45the girl from undercastro's regime for a price yeah i would have done it for free yeah but you didn't
29:50are you really ready to stake your entire future on some girl you don't even know
30:00vega had an apartment for her
30:04i took her there when i got her to the mainland where union city summit avenue
30:08and what
30:14where
30:23looks like nobody's home this girl's in dire need of a trip to ikea
30:28this bed hasn't even been made i don't think she's sleeping here
30:31beckett yeah looks like dirt good see us you down here
30:41you guys
30:47there's blood it's definitely vegas and the footprint that's harder to nail down the composition of the
30:55dirt is pretty similar to dirt anywhere in the city so we can't actually prove that she was at the scene
30:59i just said it's harder but there were traces of titanium dioxide
31:03for you takes a little batting practice on vega's head heads home packs her things
31:07heads the room giving a whole new meaning to the term hit and run
31:11beckett b-e-c-k-e-double-t badge four one three one nine i need a tsa hold on a potential fugitive
31:19yes i'll hold
31:20uniforms are circling that picture of lara we got from quintana they're blasting on every storefront
31:25within a mile of her place so was the girl evidence looks that way we figure she honey
31:29trapped vega into giving her tickets out of cuba and when she got here he wanted a little more
31:32than she was willing to give and things went south from there maybe it was the cuban government all
31:36along they hated vega for defecting so they send a beautiful spy for him to fall in love with
31:42it works he smuggles her back home and bam he's dead sounds like a castle story
31:50i'll call it corazon de fuego yes i need to detain and contain all no-fly protocols thank you though we
31:57really should stake out the consulate way ahead of you surveillance has been there for about an
32:01hour if she killed him out of self-defense then she'd go back to the devil she knows and yet i'm
32:06sensing skepticism on my theory yeah thanks my reader well you're both geniuses that was our guys
32:11at the consulate they just spotted lara walking right through the door i don't know what to tell
32:16you i've never seen that girl before well then you should invest in some corrective lenses
32:21our surveillance team saw her coming in here not half an hour ago surveillance team
32:25they're watching us now only within the scope of the law the watcher becomes the watched i'm a
32:32big fan of irony ask her she's a cuban citizen requesting asylum she's a suspect in a murder
32:38investigation and you expect me just to hand her over to the american authorities mr sanchez as i'm
32:43sure you're well aware a country's consulate and its embassy have a different set of rights
32:49and privileges this is only a consulate you do not have diplomatic immunity
32:57produce the girl now or i will get a search warrant and make a public spectacle
33:01of your government harboring a criminal on american soil
33:04i did not kill him please you have to believe
33:21why i i did not kill him please you have to believe then why did you run why did you try to
33:36go back to cuba i was afraid the man will kill me too what man the one who comes the night he died he
33:43come to the apartment came to the apartment there was a man who came to the apartment the night
33:51that vega died and that's why you were running he killed my father your father vega kenno vega is
33:59your father okay lara take us from the beginning des del principio vega and my mother
34:06her mother were engaged when he defected she was supposed to come but she didn't as punishment for
34:25what vega did they threw her mother in prison she was pregnant with her at the time did vega know about
34:32this until a couple of months ago he heard a rumor that he had a daughter well that's why vega went to
34:40cuba to see if he really did have a daughter they didn't actually meet because the government was
34:49watching he got her a message saying that he could get her out as soon as he could the first time i
34:57meet my father was three nights ago and i want to tell you how much suffering he caused
35:12she grew up believing that her father had abandoned her mother to get rich
35:16he told her that wasn't true he only defected because her mother said that she was going to as
35:22well but she had changed her mind at the last minute all those years he had thought that she
35:29had turned her back on him he never knew that they that the government had made an example of him to
35:36all the other players he never knew that she had died in prison my father is very upset when i tell him
35:46this he said he needed to talk to someone he uh uh give me money for food i never see him again
35:53you said earlier that there was a man at the apartment when i go to the market to go buy food
36:02when i come back i see a man at the um apartment not my father i was so scared so i leave
36:12then i hear canovega is dead so i run and i hide i just wanted to go home he killed my father
36:25this man who came to your apartment can you describe him for me yes
36:34let me get this straight an illegal claiming to be canovega's daughter after being in this country
36:40for less than 24 hours identify someone who kind of looks like me from a distance at night
36:47well gee guys what am i when i sign my confession right now or after the big uh press conference
36:54now's good come on kids come on you know he was my friend not to mention a hefty commission
37:03what's my motive the thing about people who have a lot mr fox is that they have the most to lose
37:08i'm sure vega felt betrayed when he learned the truth the truth about what your favorite story
37:15barcelona 1992 only you left out the part where you lied to canna vega about helping his fiance defect
37:22it's not my fault that she changed her mind all right truth is you couldn't get her off the island
37:27but you didn't know that he'd rather be there with her than here making big bucks for you and the majors
37:31so you let him believe that she had changed her mind and to keep him from ever finding out the
37:36truth you had her put away put away in cuba oh come on i have a lot of pull but uh influencing a
37:47military dictatorship isn't as easy as getting a dinner reservation at lucerne you'd influenced
37:51their people before manuel gutierrez aka el pulpo the octopus you walked away with the star player
37:59of the cuban national team for a rolex we did a little research he was the chief witness at her
38:06trial was denouncing vega's fiancee always a part of your plan with el pulpo or did you have to pay
38:11extra for that i've heard you're a killer negotiator you can't possibly be serious when vega figured
38:17out what you had done he called you from his club and told you to meet him i think he came after you
38:22and threatened to destroy you and that's why you killed him it's a hell of a story kids i paid el
38:28pulpo to take care of my player's girl when the cuban government is sending away people every day
38:33well that's a hell of a tale it's pure conjecture you know it's not conjecture the blood that we found
38:40on the driver's side floor mat in your car that was vega's blood as much as you tried to clean those five
38:47thousand dollar pair of shoes you were wearing while you smashed vega's skull in you didn't quite
38:51get all of it
38:58losentia call my lawyer you're telling me he's about to earn the outrageous obscene amounts of money i pay
39:08turn around turn around robert fox you're under arrest for the murder of canovega
39:18what's going to happen to laura she can stay in the states for a year and then decide whether
39:22she wants to apply for citizenship or not well i can't imagine her staying her last bit of family
39:27is gone i mean the only person that she knew here is dead well there is one more person that she should
39:34mate
39:41so you're laura she was born in cuba right after mr vega defected she's not his girlfriend
39:49she's his daughter cano had a daughter my father didn't know how you would like to have me here
39:58she said she knows her father loved you very much and he didn't want to hurt you
40:14she said she knows her father loved you very much and he didn't want to hurt you
40:18and that she hoped and he hoped that together you could be a family
40:31i'm sorry maggie
40:42mi casa es su casa
41:04Hey, Dad.
41:05Hey, daughter.
41:06What are you doing up so late?
41:08Waiting for you.
41:10Did I do something wrong?
41:11No.
41:14I was just thinking about what you said about your dad.
41:17How he could be anything you imagined him to be.
41:19An astronaut or a pirate.
41:21Whip cream inventor?
41:22A whipped cream inventor.
41:24There's one thing he can't be.
41:26What's that?
41:27A dad.
41:28Just a regular dad.
41:30Teaching his son how to ride a bike or helping him with homework or having a catch.
41:35Makes me sad he didn't get to have those things.
41:37Well, I can't miss what I didn't have.
41:40What if you could have it?
41:46You have a time machine behind the kitchen counter?
41:57What do you say, son?
41:59What about a game of catch with your old man?
42:01Yeah, I'd like that.
