00:00Hello, my name is Amber Allett, and I'm a journalist specialising in education.
00:05In a new report, UK healthy eating charity, The Food Foundation,
00:09has looked into what kinds of meat the UK is eating and why it matters.
00:13It's ended up shining an unexpected light on children's school dinners,
00:17as well as what the charity views as some problems with what's in them.
00:21And with the government trialling free school breakfast clubs
00:23on top of its existing free school meal programme,
00:26making sure that they're benefiting children as much as possible
00:29is more important than ever.
00:31Here are three of the key takeaways around school meals
00:34and what kids are eating from the report.
00:36Number one, four out of five of the most commonly eaten meats in schools
00:40and educational institutions were either read or processed,
00:44despite the potential health risks.
00:47These include ham in number one, sausages in number two,
00:51bolognese sauce in number four, and sausage rolls in number five,
00:55with number three, chicken, being the only exception.
00:59Number two, children are eating far more processed meat proportionally than adults.
01:04More than a third of all of the meat that children eat is processed,
01:07or 36% total, while 9% of the meat that under-18s eat
01:12comes in the form of pizza toppings.
01:15Finally, official government food standards for schools
01:18currently recommend giving children a portion of meat or poultry
01:21three or more days each week.
01:23But the Food Foundation would like this rule relaxed.
01:26On top of that, the charity says the guidance should be updated
01:30to recommend removing or limiting the amount of processed meat
01:33being served to children at school.
