Philippines and EU to set up security and defense dialogues

The Philippines and the European Union agreed on Monday, June 2, to start dialogues on security and defense in order to tackle emerging threats like cyber attacks and foreign interference.

Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo made the announcement at a joint news conference with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

00:00Today, we announce the establishment of new EU-Philippines Security and Defense Dialogue.
00:13This will be a dedicated platform through which we can deepen our cooperation, exchange expertise on security and defense,
00:23and explore joint initiatives that contribute to the regional as well as global security.
00:29The European Union is a firm believer in international law.
00:33And in the international law, we have agreed certain principles.
00:38We have the UNCLOS, we have the maritime security arrangements and the rules there.
00:44So, we reject any unilateral changes to the status quo, including use of coercion.
00:50We hope that through the security and defense dialogue, we will remain proactive and united
00:56in addressing emerging security threats and challenges that transcend borders, cyber attacks,
