00:10Republic Day is celebrated every year on June 2. This day marks the birth of the Italian Republic
00:17in 1946, when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and embrace democracy. After World War
00:25II, Italy was in ruins and the monarchy was closely associated with the fascist regime.
00:31The people wanted change, so a national referendum was held on June 2 and 3, 1946.
00:38For the first time, all Italian men and women over 21 could vote.
00:43The result was historic, the majority chose a republic, ending the reign of the House of Savoy.
