00:00BNP Paribas, partenaire des plus belles histoires de Roland-Garros, aux côtés des ramasseurs de balles depuis plus de 50 ans.
00:21Je me sens bien, je me sens vraiment bien.
00:59Yeah, I feel like I'm playing great, man.
01:02I feel like I'm in a great place.
01:05I'm just happy being out there.
01:06I love competing.
01:07I'm playing super aggressive.
01:09Making the game simple.
01:12Given what the game gives me,
01:14I'm just trying to play the right way
01:15and the way I know how.
01:18I'm at my best and living and dying with the results.
01:20It's going my way right now.
01:23I know you've always felt that on any given day
01:26you can play, you can beat anybody in the world
01:28and be really close and be right with them.
01:31But do you feel like the gulf between you
01:35and the guys at the top is getting smaller?
01:38Are you getting closer?
01:39Or is it just the sort of thing like right day, right time,
01:43right atmosphere, right court,
01:44that for you bridges that gap?
01:48I think the difference between me and the top guys
01:50has always been on the day.
01:56I don't think the top guys are really the issue.
01:57I think the guys, you know, the pool of people.
02:01You know, if you look at the guys in front of me,
02:03I mean, I'm much more comfortable playing guys around me
02:06and ahead of me than the other guys.
02:08I'm much more liable and week to week.
02:10I don't lose to those guys week to week.
02:12I lose to everybody else.
02:13So that's not really my concern, you know,
02:16playing the best guys in the world.
02:19You know, I don't really feel them.
02:20I don't really feel like their level is so much better than mine.
02:23And I know I can do it on a given day,
02:25but winning these matches like this,
02:28that's what gives me a ton of confidence.
02:29And that's always been my key to heal
02:32and something I'm truly, really happy about right now.
02:35Hi, Francis.
02:39This might be an impossible thing to answer,
02:42but I'll give it a shot.
02:43Can you think of a moment over the last week
02:50where you were like,
02:51hey, you know, I can do this here?
02:55Something that clicked for you
02:57either during a particular match
02:59or maybe even a practice or away from the courts,
03:02something where you felt like,
03:05okay, this is not going to be a problem for me
03:08the way maybe it's been in the past.
03:10No, I mean, yeah, man,
03:11I told these guys the other day, you know,
03:13I broke a racket a couple of days before the tournament.
03:16Kind of just, and, you know,
03:18I was holding a lot of my emotions in of, you know,
03:21just being like, yeah, you know,
03:22like being super positive.
03:23Yeah, you know, it's all good, like whatever.
03:25And, you know, I got killed in practice,
03:27you know, a couple of days before
03:29and then had to practice again,
03:31playing sets with a guy.
03:32I'm getting, you know, getting my butt kicked there.
03:34And then, you know,
03:36I found a way to kind of win that set
03:37and I felt, and I was on my team,
03:38I was like, that was kind of a big day, you know.
03:40So, not only, you know, that I had emotion
03:44and actually like, but then, you know,
03:47solved it in real time and not, you know,
03:49after the fact, oh, I should have done this and this.
03:51And I think after that,
03:52I kind of like faced what was really going on.
03:54I was like, yeah, it's been horrible.
03:55I've been traveling around.
03:56It's just hasn't been fun at all.
03:59And, you know, kind of faced it.
04:00And then after that, I was,
04:01gave me a space to kind of just play.
04:03Like, you know, when I can play, I can play.
04:05This is not really something that's like a shock.
04:08Like, you know, when I'm playing well
04:11and I'm there and I'm present, I'm having fun,
04:13you know, I think the sky's the limit for me.
04:16I was actually going to ask about that.
04:18Obviously, when we see you on court,
04:19you kind of weigh your emotions clearly.
04:22But in general, like when you're going through difficult times,
04:26is that something that happens, you know,
04:28sometimes that you hold things in
04:29and that it kind of gets worse?
04:31Yeah.
04:31I mean, sometimes I've seen a quote sometimes.
04:33Sometimes when you see the guy,
04:35the happiest guy in the room,
04:36sometimes you got to ask him how he's doing.
04:37Obviously, you know, I was usually a happy guy.
04:41You know, usually only keep that kind of
04:43what I'm going through with people close to me.
04:45I don't think he's really, not really a complaining guy.
04:48But, yeah, I mean, you know, we're human.
04:51You know, I'm competing at the highest level.
04:53And, you know, I have a, you know, I got an ego.
04:54I have a certain standard that I want to play at.
04:56And when you're not doing that, it's very frustrating.
04:59But at the same time, what's amazing about tennis
05:01is week to week, anything can happen.
05:04You got the pen of your own story.
05:05And then, you know, win one match, win two matches,
05:09by the time you know it,
05:09now you're sitting here talking about being in the quarters,
05:11everything else that happened for, you know,
05:13eight months, nine months, it almost didn't happen.
05:15It's relevant.
05:16So, tennis is an amazing sport in that way,
05:18but also frustrating in that way as well.
05:20But it's got to love the ebbs and flows
05:22and just kind of keep that perspective, right?
05:25Do you feel like you can play freer at this, you know,
05:28it feels like a house money sort of situation
05:29being to the quarters of the French
05:30more than it would at a tournament
05:32where maybe more is expected of you headed in
05:35from yourself or from the outside,
05:36that, you know, you go into whoever you play next,
05:39Muzetti or Runa, and then kind of think, like,
05:41I can just, I have nothing,
05:42relatively nothing to lose here.
05:44Yeah, I mean, there's a little bit of that, for sure.
05:45I mean, I don't think anyone, you know,
05:47I'm in a super dark horse in this sense.
05:48I don't think anyone's really thinking
05:49that I was going to even be in this position.
05:54But at the same time, like, I mean,
05:59I mean, I don't really look at it like house money.
06:03I'm like, man, now that I'm here,
06:04I'm like, let's win.
06:06Like, you know, I was having dinner with Joey yesterday.
06:09I'm like, I mean, yeah, you're feeling great,
06:11but let's keep winning.
06:12Like, there's nothing more fun than winning.
06:15And, you know, once I get my feet going
06:18and Max is under me, I'm dangerous.
06:20Then I'm feeling really good,
06:21and I'll play anybody.
06:23Just to me, you missed the word dark horse,
06:24so I'm curious to ask about Haley
06:25because we have two D.C. players
06:27on the day nine of the French Open,
06:29which is pretty cool and pretty rare.
06:31What are your thoughts on,
06:32I asked you about her last time,
06:34but now that she's facing Keys next,
06:36what do you think about that
06:37and her continuing to march on?
06:39Yeah, it's tough.
06:39Obviously, you know, let's talk so much about it
06:41because obviously I'm super close with Haley
06:43and as Madison as well.
06:46One of the best women win there.
06:48but, you know, obviously, you know,
06:51I'm leaning a little bit,
06:52but no secret there.
06:53But I think it's going to be tough.
06:55It's going to be tough.
06:56I mean, Maddie's incredible, man.
06:57She just wants to slam this year.
06:58She's so confident.
06:59You've seen, you know,
07:00her rope in the backhand,
07:01winning down match points
07:02shows how much confidence
07:03she's got right now.
07:04So they're playing on Langland.
07:07It's going to be incredible.
07:08Hopefully, she rises to the occasion.
07:09She's never played on a court that big.
07:12Let's see if the lights are too bright
07:13or let's see if she's made for it.
07:14You know, those are kind of the moments.
07:15And, yeah, we'll see.
07:21If you could point to one thing in your game,
07:25how you've played this week,
07:27that pleases you the most,
07:30what would you say that is?
07:31Just how fast I'm playing.
07:33Playing really fast.
07:35Getting on the ball quickly.
07:36I'm knocking balls off.
07:38I'm not really giving up ground.
07:40I'm serving at a pretty decent clip.
07:42of probably seconds of returns,
07:44I'm hopping on.
07:46I'm not doing the going back thing
07:48and playing all spinny
07:49and running around
07:50and just grunting loud
07:51and not hitting the ball hard.
07:52Like, I'm actually playing.
07:55I'm playing hardcore tennis
07:56on a click court.
07:57Guys don't really like that so much.
08:00But for me, I've got to commit to it.
08:02Even it may not be the best thing,
08:04quote, unquote,
08:05how you're supposed to go about it.
08:06but I've got to just commit to it
08:08and live and die by it.
08:12I want to ask you one other thing,
08:14but on that hard court tennis
08:15on a click court,
08:16is that the conditions
08:17are allowing you to do that?
08:19Because it hasn't been that damp
08:22and soggy and stuff like that?
08:23Or would you do that no matter what?
08:26I mean, it could be freezing.
08:27I'm still going to do it.
08:28I mean, my success rate just goes higher.
08:32The faster I play,
08:33the better I move my feet.
08:34I mean, if I'm closer to baseline,
08:37I'm just really dangerous.
08:38I can see the court better.
08:39You know, my shots are going deeper
08:40and getting on the guys quicker.
08:42So take less time from your opponent.
08:45You can be in winning positions.
08:47If I can get myself in the front court
08:49and being able to suffocate guys that way,
08:52I'll probably be in a winning position.
08:54And is it the last, what,
08:5690 minutes, two hours or so?
08:59If you look at your phone,
09:00is it blowing up?
09:01Are you getting lots of messages?
09:02Like, you get the feeling this is resonating?
09:05Yeah, I mean, it's the same.
09:07Your people?
09:07It's the same.
09:10It's the same.
09:11The thing is,
09:13it's not like my first time going deep into major.
09:15Like, you know how it is.
09:16You win matches and everyone's texting you
09:18and I'm super excited.
09:19And, you know, it is what it is.
09:23But, and I'm glad.
09:24You know, the people that are around me understand.
09:26You know, they're super happy.
09:27But, again, I'm where my feet are.
09:30Quarterfinals is not, you know,
09:33end all, be all.
09:34You know, you just keep going, keep going.
09:37So, I'm happy that everyone's excited.
09:39And, yeah, your phone's going to be blowing up
09:41and Instagram's going to be blowing up.
09:42But, you know,
09:43the most important thing is what's next.
09:46And, yeah, that's the day off
09:48and then see who wins.
09:51It's been a few rounds now,
09:52but I just wanted to check
09:53what your level of satisfaction was
09:55of seeing Coco leave her rackets
09:57when she came on court.
09:58Incredible.
09:59I absolutely loved it.
10:00It was the first day I saw her today
10:03and I absolutely rinsed her
10:05because she was clowning so hard at NUELs.
10:07Like, man, I can't believe you're doing that.
10:10And she was, I mean,
10:11she was full out shaking her whole bag.
10:13It was like an empty cookie jar,
10:15like on Shockeray.
10:16I'm like, what are you doing?
10:18Like, you know,
10:19and the only person there
10:20was her New Balance dude
10:22and she looking at him like,
10:23and he's like,
10:24you got New Balance on,
10:25so what's up?
10:26So, it was incredible, man.
10:28I'm going to keep ripping her
10:29for a long time.
10:30I've never seen, you know,
10:31someone two in the world
10:32have zero things in her bag.
10:34That was incredible.
10:35So, yeah, I'm glad.
10:38I'm glad.
10:39And I think it's just that
10:40that kind of thing is so big
10:41because it just makes everyone look like,
10:43like, we're all human.
10:44Like, you know, people make mistakes.
10:45What are the team?
10:46What are her?
10:46Whatever.
10:47But that was a funny moment,
10:49especially like she tries
10:50to be like Mrs. McShure.
10:52So, that was great.
10:54I'm happy it happened to her.
10:55Hopefully it happens again.
10:55Thank you.
10:56Thank you.
10:57Thank you.
10:58Thank you.
10:58Thank you.
