A scene from The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4 has become the center of controversy after Ellie jokingly says “I’m gonna be a dad” in response to Dina’s pregnancy reveal. Critics claim the line pushes a so-called “woke” agenda, while defenders argue it’s just a quick gag. The backlash has reignited criticism of Bella Ramsey’s casting and the show’s deviations from the original game, especially in how it handles identity and relationships. Still, the moment went viral, generating memes, discourse, and renewed debates about the show's direction as it heads into its third season.

00:00Is The Last of Us cooked after airing this scene?
00:07The second season of HBO's The Last of Us just wrapped up, and a lot of fans of both the game
00:13and its season 1 adaptation have a bad feeling about the direction the show is taking.
00:17Despite overwhelming acclaim for the first season, some of the game's most diehard fans
00:21have been unhappy with certain aspects of the show since day one. The most common complaint
00:26is the choice of actor Bella Ramsey as Ellie. A lot of people simply don't think their
00:30portrayal of the character is accurate, both in the way they act and the way they look.
00:33While complaining about the portrayal of a beloved character is valid criticism,
00:37most of those criticisms have been bogged down by cruel memes about Bella Ramsey's appearance.
00:42On top of that, some fans aren't happy with the changes made between the source material and the
00:46show, while others are mad that the show kept some of the more progressive things from The Last of Us
00:51Part 2 game, such as Pride Town and Ellie's relationship with Dina. Many of these complaints
00:55come from the anti-woke crowd, who are now targeting one brief scene in the show's fourth episode
01:00as the ultimate sign of the show's new woke identity. If you haven't seen the fourth episode
01:05of season 2 yet, consider this a spoiler warning. In the episode, Dina admits to Ellie that she's
01:10pregnant with her ex-boyfriend Jessie's baby. Ellie, who is now dating Dina, reacts to the information
01:15enthusiastically and says, I'm gonna be a dad.
01:18So we're all having a baby. Holy s**t. I'm gonna be a dad.
01:28This joke sparked an angry flame in some viewers, who saw the line as a step too far into woke
01:33territory because technically a woman can't be a dad.
01:36Two lines means pregnant.
01:38This one's pretty old.
01:40The show's defenders tried to cool down the situation by reminding people that it was just
01:56a quick throwaway joke. But that hasn't stopped the wave of posts complaining about the scene
02:01from littering social media. The scene became a huge meme across social media platforms,
02:05inspiring edits on TikTok, memes on Twitter and Reddit, and more than a few criticisms about the
02:10game versus the show. In the game, the scene plays out very differently. Instead of celebrating
02:15the pregnancy, Ellie gets mad at Dina for not telling her earlier so they could turn back to
02:19safety, calling her a burden.
02:20How long have you known? It was late a few weeks ago. A few weeks? We could've...
02:28We could've still turned back. I didn't know. I wasn't sure, okay? I didn't want to be a burden.
02:35Well, you're a burden now, aren't you?
02:36The memes about the scene have elevated a lot of other negative memes and opinions about the
02:41show's trajectory. But they've also inspired more people to come to the show and Bella Ramsey's
02:45defense. The Last of Us was recently renewed for a third season, with plans for a fourth season also
02:50being discussed.
