00:00The character you're looking at is Bowsette, a version of the usually threatening antagonist of the Mario Bros. series, Bowser, only this time he's a human woman with a lot going on.
00:09In 2018, Bowsette became the most fond-after woman on social media after new Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was announced for the Nintendo Switch.
00:17The trailer showed off a new item called the Super Crown, which can be used to transform Toadette into Peachette, who is essentially an alternate version of Princess Peach.
00:25This interesting new item got gamers thinking, what if other characters were able to wear the Super Crown? Would they also transform into super cute waifus?
00:33The idea was first illustrated by Twitter artist AYYK92, who posted a comic on September 19th, 2018, in which Mario gives Bowser the Super Crown after they're both rejected by Peach.
00:44Bowser transforms into Bowsette, and the two start dating, much to the shock of Peach and Luigi.
00:50Before long, artists took Bowsette and started drawing her in a variety of styles.
00:54The character was popularized not only in North America, but in Japan too, where she was reportedly tweeted over a million times in about six hours.
01:02Nintendo was asked to comment on the character that September, but they refused to do so.
01:06The virality left the original artist grateful, but also nervous about their new following.
01:10Then in 2019, they won an award from Pixiv and Nico Nico for their comic, showcasing just how much of an impact the Bowsette comic made on the internet.
01:18And of course, the art didn't end with Bowsette. As she continued to go viral, artists imagined what other Mario Bros. characters might look like after wearing the crown.
01:26Some of the most popular examples included Princess Boo, a version of the spooky ghost enemy from Super Mario Bros. as a white-haired waifu ready to steal your soul.
01:35On the more niche side of things, some Mario fans started going crazy over Chain Chompette and Piranette, which are Super Crown versions of the Chain Chomp and Piranha Plant.
01:44If you want to get even more niche, Jack Black's version of Mario got the Bowsette treatment in 2021, although the less we talk about that one, the better.
01:51The memes eventually died down, but recently they were brought back in a new form thanks to the elephant fruit from Super Mario Bros. Wonder,
01:58which has the ability to turn characters into anthropomorphic elephants when eaten.
02:03It didn't take long for the people of the internet to start drawing their favorite Mario characters in their elephant forms,
02:08with Princess Daisy becoming a particularly popular example of the meme.
02:11The elephant fruit paved the way for a bizarre 2025 event where YouTuber Zach Scott started commissioning and posting artwork of Daisy as an elephant multiple times each day.
02:21If you want to know more about that, look for our recent video on the Zach Scott Elephant Daisy commissions
02:26to see just how powerful the effects of a new Mario item can be on society.
