Former President Biden remembers his late son Beau at a Memorial Day event in New Castle, Delaware.
Transcript
00:00We come together to remember the debt we owe to the American military.
00:05The military is a solid spine, the spine of our nation.
00:12Our troops, our veterans, our military families, and our Gold Star families in particular.
00:21Only around 1% of all Americans defend 99% of us.
00:27One percent, just 1% of Americans risk the ultimate sacrifice.
00:35We owe them so much more than we can ever repay them.
00:39We have many obligations as a nation, but only one truly sacred obligation, sacred obligation.
00:47That's to equip those we send into harm's way and care for them and their families when they come home and when they don't come home.
00:56It's a sacred obligation.
01:00I know for many of you, Memorial Day, like for us, is deeply personal.
01:06For the Bidens, this day is the 10th anniversary of the loss of my son Beau who spent a year in Iraq.
01:13And to be honest, it's a hard day.
01:20His son and I, Hunter, who's here in the crowd, I don't know where you're sitting, Hunter, but all the way in the back there.
01:28His daddy came to this event with me, well, at the same age when he started.
01:37He just graduated from high school, heading off to college.
01:41And, you know, it's being with all of you, but quite frankly, it makes things a little bit easier.
01:50It really does.
01:50So thank you for allowing me to grieve with you.
01:56Some of you know, some of you knew my son Beau.
02:00He served in the Delaware National Guard, including a year in Iraq.
02:06Remember, I got a phone call.
02:07I was in Washington.
02:08He said, Dad, what are you doing Friday?
02:10I said, what do you need, honey?
02:11He said, I want you to pin my bars on.
02:13I said, pin your bars on?
02:15You have two kids?
02:16He said, Dad, somebody's got to do this, Dad.
02:21Proudest day of his life is putting that uniform on.
02:24That's not a joke.
02:24That's not hyperbole.
02:25That's real.
02:27And, you know, it's one of the proudest things I ever did, pinning his bars on him.
02:33And it means so much to our family at the headquarters of the Delaware National Guard.
02:38It has been renamed after Beau.
02:42His legacy lives on.
02:43And his children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, like those you lost, will be remembered.
02:49They'll remember who he was.
02:51And just like the legacy of all our fallen heroes lives on, they live on in us.
03:00And they live on in the strength and freedom of our nation.
03:03That sounds like hyperbole, but it's real.
03:07It's literal.
03:09So, everyone, everyone who came here today to grieve with grief in their heart, please know,
03:17you're not alone.
03:18You'll never be alone.
03:20And your loved one will never be forgotten.
03:23Period.
