00:00If you've ever tried to find a public toilet in central Bristol, you'll know it's not
00:06always the easiest of tasks, and if you have a disability is often even harder. But that
00:13could be about to change at one of the city's busiest lunchtime hotspots. A new planning
00:18application has been submitted to Bristol City Council that would install a proper disabled
00:25access toilet inside St Nick's Market, something disability campaigners have been calling
00:31for for years. The proposed plan would transform an old traders'
00:37loom near the low and slow barbecue stall in a modern accessible facility, open to the
00:43public. A new metal ramp would be installed, along with handrails to make up for easier
00:49wheelchair users to get in and out. Currently, the only disabled toilet on the
00:54site is tricky to reach, with a narrow walkway, limited opening hours and access that's by
01:01request only. In fact, a report from the West of England Centre for Inclusive Living, all
01:07the way back to 2019, said that a better facility should be the top priority.
01:13St Nick's of course is a Grade 1 listed building and home to dozens of small traders. It's
01:18a big draw for tourists and office workers, but many of the facilities haven't kept pace
01:24with the modern access needs. As always, applications are open for public comment.
01:30Whether you're for or against it, no decision has been made on when St Nick's toilet plans
01:36will be approved, but for many locals, this is a one development that's well overdue.
01:43So, I'm glad I know.
