The prosecution says the statements made by the former Umno leader were unfair and scandalous, and risks undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.
00:01The prosecution has called for former UMNO Supreme Council member Isham Jalil to be punished severely for his comments on judges in ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak's various 1MDB-related cases, saying the statements he made were unfair and scandalous.
00:17Deputy Public Prosecutor Mustafa P. Kunyalam told the High Court that the contents of Isham's interview, published on social media on September 30, 2023, risked undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.
00:32He urged the court to impose a fine, a jail sentence or both, as the contemner Isham has failed to purge the contempt proceedings.
00:39Last year, the Attorney General rejected representations made on Isham's behalf, which sought to allow him to offer an unreserved apology in exchange for ending the proceedings.
00:51Mustafa, who was assisted by DPP T. Deepa Nair, said Isham had launched scurrilous attacks on trial judges Nazlan Gauzali, Colin Lawrence Sequeira, and a federal court bench chaired by Chief Justice Tenggu Maimun Tuan Mat.
01:05Isham is also alleged to have accused Sequeira and Nazlan, who presided over the 1MDB and SRC international trials, respectively, of bias.
