00:00Assalamualaikum and a warm hello to all viewers and listeners. Welcome to Fireside Chat with
00:13Sinar Dili. I'm your host Sharifah Syairah and today we're joined by a very very special guest.
00:18I'm pretty sure that you guys have heard or know this gentleman. He's a talented singer,
00:23a famous actor and amazing host. Not only does he speak well but he's also a truly inspiring
00:31personality. It's my absolute pleasure to welcome Muhammad Alif Muhammad Sata or also known as
00:37Alif Sata. Alif, thank you so much for joining us today. It's really an honour for us to have
00:43you in this today's episode. But before we dive in into today's topic, I'll learn for our audience
00:49to get to know you a little bit better. So Mr. Alif, can you share a bit about yourself
00:54to everyone who's in today? Assalamualaikum to the brothers and sisters who's watching
00:59right now. Thanks again for having me on the show. Alhamdulillah, it's an absolute pleasure
01:05and thank you for the really inspiring warm intro. Now it just made me nervous. So I'm
01:12Alif Sata. I'm a father of three. I've been in the industry for close to about 20 years
01:19now. Started singing first when I was 16 years old. I worked my way up from singing and then
01:27I've been trying a little bit of TV hosting and acting. And at the current moment right
01:34now, a few businesses that I've been doing at the same time and really passionate about
01:41sports as well. So, but most importantly, I found myself in a big responsibility also
01:50as a public figure to also spread the word of positivity, awareness and togetherness to
01:59all Malaysians, especially the youth. Alright. Thank you so much, Mr. Alif for sharing that.
02:05So for today, we'll be discussing a variety topics that are very close to our hearts. So we'll
02:09begin with family planning. So while often overlooked in everyday conversation, planning for the future,
02:15especially when it comes to managing family wealth, plays a vital role in preserving harmony
02:19harmony among loved ones and safeguarding their wellbeing after we are no longer around. Yet the
02:26concept of legacy planning remains unfamiliar to many Malaysians. For some, it can be a confusing
02:30process. For others is something that gets pushed aside despite its significance in securing a stable
02:36future for their children. So Mr. Alif, perhaps you could share your thoughts on this as you are not just
02:42known for your talent on screen and stage, but also a devoted husband and also father. How has becoming a
02:48parent changed the way you think about the future, especially when it comes to providing to you and your family?
02:53Of course, as a husband and the leader, as the provider of the family, of course, every single time you step out of the
03:05house, you are motivated, you know. You know exactly why you're doing this, for who, and you have a certain goal and mission
03:16that you want to achieve in life. Let it be, whether it's the financial goal, whether it's a personal goal, a family
03:24goal, you know. And yes, everything comes and you have to start with a plan. You don't just one day wake up
03:31out of bed and say that I'm just going to get married and, you know, take where, just go where life takes me.
03:37You just have to take control and you got to know where you're heading. And for me, I got married at a very young age
03:45when I was 24 years old. At the time, I was already working. Perhaps I wasn't as busy or as successful
03:56as I am now, but I knew what I was getting myself into. And it's not a settling down. You know, people say
04:06that when you get married, you settle down. It's definitely a misconception altogether. It's actually,
04:12it's an upgrade and it's a whole different adventure. It's a new phase of life that you are sharing a life
04:19together. You're planning a life together. You're going to have children. And your children are going to have
04:24their own lives one day. So every single thing that I do, I always have family at the back of my head.
04:31You know, is it going to be good for me? Is it going to be good for my family? Before I do something,
04:36before I take on a job, how far or how long am I going to be away from the family? And when I'm away,
04:45is my family going to be taken care of? Is everything going to be good for them? So you plan it, you know,
04:54with your spouse, with your wife, with the family. You get advice. And for me, right now,
05:03I'm at a phase where you want to tell people that you have to start early.
05:11You have no idea what's going to happen tomorrow. Nothing is promised to you. You could be,
05:17I could be walking today, tomorrow, something bad is going to happen to you. And what happens then?
05:23How do you go to work? How do you make money? How do you get income for your family, for their future?
05:32If your wife is no longer working, if something happens to you, does she have to go back to work?
05:38Or what's going to happen to the kids' future? Do they have to sacrifice their education?
05:43So every single thing that you do, you have to calculate it, you know?
05:51And some people, and the majority of the youth right now, they think that, you know,
05:58protecting yourself and getting a plan and insurance for coverage for your health is a luxury.
06:08They think that it is a luxury, but it is actually far from it. It's actually something responsible.
06:20You know, it's your responsibility to yourself, to your family. And it has to start now.
06:27You have to start it at a very, very young age. I've been telling people that it's not necessarily for
06:35the big-time earners, you know, there's a plan as low as RM6 that you plan now.
06:44And they will give you RM500,000 coverage, RM500,000 coverage in case of death, you know?
06:52So to say that they can't afford is quite nonsense.
06:56So I think even though in this digital world, you know, people sell things online, on so many
07:05social platforms, there's no, so many stream of income that you can make and you can work
07:12for you to get RM6 a month for your future, for your kids' future, for your wife.
07:18I think it's RM6 too much for you. You know, it makes you think. Being a public figure now,
07:26you want people to, you want to share your journey, tell your story, and hopefully people will
07:33recognize that and say that, okay, I want to start planning. I just want to do like how Alif do,
07:38how Alif does it. And we see so many stories in the media right now, families, broken families
07:47after death, nothing to hold on to, you know, house being taken away with debts and whatever.
07:57And most importantly, health, you know? When you are working and then suddenly your health
08:03deteriorates, something happens to you, then you cannot provide for your family. So you have
08:07to take that in consideration whenever you do something, you know? So we want to encourage
08:13people to do the right thing. So here at Sun Life Malaysia, as the ambassador, we want to
08:21encourage that and tell people to start small. And eventually, when they start working and they
08:29are more motivated, then they can increase more and then prepare yourself for the future.
08:40All right. So as for you, Mr. Alif, what does legacy mean to you? And not just in terms of money
08:46and also material things, but as a father, as a son and also a public figure?
08:50Of course, legacy is very subjective. You know, your name could be a legacy. My gang
09:02subuh macam Jumaat could be a legacy. It doesn't have to be my own, but people can take it up
09:07and carry it forward for the next hundred years. The moments that you share with your family
09:13is a legacy. And the knowledge that you pour onto your children, the moments and the experience
09:26you share together, that is as well also a legacy. But I think on this topic of being a family
09:35and a legacy, your family is your best investment. I always get that. I've been, I talked to
09:42my parents, you know, whether I would ask like, what is a good investment? Or what should
09:48I do? What do I invest into? What do I do this? Or should I do that? My parents would
09:53say, your children, your kids and your family is your best investment. So what are you doing
09:59to protect it, to keep it well? You know, as a Muslim, as a father, you have your faith
10:08that you hold onto about risk, about risk. At the same time, you have your effort and the
10:14means that God gives you for you to provide for your family and make sure that even after
10:19you are long gone, they will be taken care of. That's the legacy that I want. I guess
10:29to tell my children to stay disciplined, to be kind to people, to always take care and put
10:37family first. That's the legacy I want. And whatever that I work now and protect, what I invest
10:48today is the momentum that I know, inshaAllah, will provide them for their life in the future,
10:56inshaAllah. So we don't often like hear Yang Malaysian talking openly about legacy planning.
11:01So what do you think is a topic that people tend to shy away from and what got you thinking
11:07about it more seriously? I think, especially when you talk about financial planning, about
11:12insurance, about coverage, people have this stigma of always, always negative. You always have
11:17one friend that say, oh come out, let me speak to you tonight, you can bring two of your
11:21friends and you know, or it doesn't matter if you take it or not. And then it ends up being
11:29something very, you know, people think it's negative until something negative happens to
11:35them. And then they'll say, oh, I should have, I should have done something. I always listen
11:41and hear that the youth right now, they think that, let's just wait lah, you know, let's just,
11:50maybe not now, maybe next a few years, maybe soon I will do it. But what are you waiting
11:57for? What kind of sign are you, are you delaying your plan? You know, this is your life, your
12:05family's life, your children's life that is at stake. And it should be your responsibility
12:15to take care of it. So I always speak to the youth, you know, whenever I do my gangster work
12:21like Jumaat, I would have heart to heart sessions with them, they would ask me, I'm not saying
12:25that I know any better, it's just that maybe you're on a different phase of life and eventually
12:31they would come up to that, that point as well. So you share just like a, like a brother
12:37to a brother to a brother, you know, you want to share your experience and hoping that they
12:42would do, decide good things and make right decisions so that everything they do will eventually
12:50help them when they are old or when they are sick or even when they are gone for them to
12:57help. You know, and we've, as a family man, as my parents taught me and how I would tell
13:04my parents as well, you know, you always have to take care of each other. And once you're
13:11taking care of your family, then your neighbours and then the whole community. So it all starts
13:16from, from you. If I might add, in the age of TikTok trend also like instant gratification,
13:23how do we get the younger generation to take something like long-term legacy planning seriously?
13:29Oh God. You know, they did a survey on this that they asked Malaysians that, do they think
13:39that financial planning or protection is important? 65% said yes. But out of that 65, only 15%
13:54are protected. So the other 85, they are not. So, yeah, it's scary, you know, in my line
14:06of work also, there's not many people have that kind of awareness. Probably they do have
14:13that awareness but they don't know how or they don't know when to start. So how to start
14:19is very easy. No, when to start is very easy. You can start now. And get advice from the
14:27right people, financial planners, and also here at Sun Life Malaysia, they have advisors
14:35that can advise according to the individual's lifestyle, their financial plan, their financial
14:41goals. So I always tell people that you have to start now. And it doesn't matter how small,
14:49or eventually, it will grow. But to reach a million miles, you have to start with that
14:57one single step.
14:59So do you think that our generation is finally breaking the silence around death, money, and
15:03preparation? Or is that still a long way to go?
15:06I think there's a taboo. Not really a taboo. It's people don't really speak about it.
15:11You know? And like people, we know that there is the afterlife. But also, it is our responsibility
15:24as well as a Muslim to know what we are doing now. Tanggungjawab kita dekat dunia ni. I think people
15:34are aware, people are getting so many are knowledgeable on these things. I may not be.
15:42I am also figuring things out at the same time. Getting protected and investing in every single
15:49thing. You know? I always say the first step is to start saving and then invest. And then
15:55you protect your legacy. I think people are, there's so many podcasts and shows and there's
16:05so many contact creators that are sharing their ilmu and their information. But it's for us
16:11to also get the right information, the right advice, so that we don't make bad choices for
16:18our lives. Because by the end of the day, we are the one being responsible and we have
16:25to take control of our lives. So, I hope that there will be more programs and content creators
16:35to speak about this and create more awareness, especially for the youth to prepare themselves
16:43for the future. So, if I can touch a bit about Geng Subur Macam Jumaat though, as widely known
16:48in 2023, the Geng Subur Macam Jumaat campaign that you spearheaded created like a remarkable
16:54phenomenon. So, looking ahead, where do you see Geng Subur Macam Jumaat going? Oh, it's definitely
16:59a phenomena. When it all started, we tried to get the youth to the mosque and trying to turn,
17:06not trying to turn, to make the mosque not just a place of worship, but also for the community,
17:13to learn as well. And there was a recent activity, a campaign that we did recently with myself
17:26and Sun Life Malaysia during Ramadan. We did a campaign, Baju Raya Lama Baru, that we call everyone
17:38to come and donate their old Baju Raya to our pickup stations, and then we would donate it to
17:48unfortunate kids. And Alhamdulillah, we had two tons of materials that was changed into new Baju Raya. So, that's a sign that all Malaysians, and the best part is that it's not only the Muslims, you know, even non-Muslims,
18:06everyone with different backgrounds chip in into the campaign. And that's the true spirit of Malaysia. That's what we want. And as of, and that's a sign that, you know, there's a
18:18spirit of togetherness doing something together. And as for a gang suber, like Jumaat, you want to encourage more people to come on board and stay consistent with their routine.
18:30and spread awareness on being positive as a community and as Malaysians.
18:42So, you built something like meaningful without needing it to be flashy. What do you want young people to know about the power of doing something quietly, consistently, and sincerely?
18:52Of course. Oh, that's a very good question. The little small things matter. And the little things that you do, it may look small or not important just because you're nobody or you feel like you're nobody.
19:09But if 7 billion people said that, then you won't get things done. You know, if you want to do something good, do it now. Don't hesitate.
19:18And it will come back to you. Goodness will come back. If you do well, goodness will come your way, inshaAllah.
19:26So, I think that brings us to end of today's discussion. Ms. Alif, it has been an honour to have you with us. Thank you for your valuable insight and also for sharing your journey with us.
19:39So, to our audience, we hope this discussion has been both inspiring and also enlightening. So, if you have any questions or thoughts, don't hesitate to share them in the comments below.
