00:00I opened the door, she was standing behind the door and I just grabbed her, looked up and of
00:06a three metre room it would have been 2.5 metres engulfed floor to ceilings in flames.
00:22So at three o'clock in the morning my wife and I woke up to our daughter screaming
00:30we just thought it was a nightmare as young parents and never saving young children.
00:35We gave it sort of two minutes and went and took her back to sleep and then we heard her scream
00:40and say help. As I got sort of around the corner to the other side of the door I saw smoke rolling
00:47at the bottom of the door seeping up to the roof and yeah just did what any other parent would do and
00:54kick the door down. As I opened the door she was standing behind the door and I just grabbed her
01:00looked up and of a three metre room it would have been 2.5 metres engulfed floor to ceilings in flames
01:06and it wasn't until I got to the door that the smoke alarms then went off because the doors were closed.
01:13I've run my own business, I've always done things to what the law is and what the standard is and I've
01:18never once thought to go with smoke alarms especially, I've never once thought that they
01:25were required in bedrooms. I've just thought the laws are there for a reason, they're there to prevent
01:29things but I've never realised how outdated and useless they actually are if the doors are closed.
01:36I think that if there was a smoke alarm in the bedroom at the time that it would have picked up
01:40the initial smoke and smother before there was an actual fire in that room.
