00:00The Back to School project is basically about going into the rural community, looking out for students who walk barefoot to school.
00:12I make the production as a shoemaker, that's where my profession comes in.
00:16So I make shoes in a minimum of 100 to 500 pieces we give to students in the rural community that go to school barefoot.
00:30My name is Sandra Okonbasi. I am a professional shoemaker and also the leader of the Park Legislative Council.
00:38The first woman to be on that seat. I run a charity foundation called Sandra Okonbasi Save the Life Foundation.
00:44We give our scholarships and we also carry out what we call Back to School project.
00:50It all started when I and my team went to visit a local community.
01:01On our way, we met some children going to school and we discovered about three of them were without shoes.
01:11I opted to give them a leave to their school. Dropping them off at school, I saw lots and lots of children without shoes.
01:21That was when I discovered that out of maybe 50 today in the class, about 20 to 30 actually without shoes, I was broken. I was broken. I wept.
01:38These kids don't deserve this. That was when I decided that I was going to put shoes on the feet of children in the rural communities who work barefoot either to school or at home.
02:03The joy that comes with it is something I can't explain. It has gone beyond giving. It has given me the self satisfaction, happiness that is beyond this world.
02:17So that's why I'm so passionate about it. And the smell. Oh God, it's priceless. The smell, the happiness on the faces of these children is something money cannot buy.
02:30And with that, I don't think I can ever stop doing that project because I know there are so many. There are so many out there. We're just starting.
02:41I will continue to listen.
