At her press briefing, Karoline Leavitt was asked what President Trump currently thinks of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Transcript
00:00We already have applied Section 232 tariffs on specific industries.
00:03Yes, thank you.
00:05President Trump says that he needed one and a half to two weeks to determine whether or not he believed Vladimir Putin wanted peace.
00:12He has been in office now for four months.
00:15What does he believe is going to happen in the next one and a half to two weeks that would change his opinion?
00:20Well, it is my understanding and it is our hope that Russia and Ukraine will engage in direct talks and negotiations next week in Istanbul.
00:28And we believe that meeting is going to take place.
00:30And that is a meeting the President encouraged and urged for these two sides to come together and negotiate directly.
00:36And the President has been clear from the very beginning of this conflict that he wants to see this conflict solved on the negotiating table, not on the battlefield.
00:44And he's told that to both leaders, again, both publicly and privately.
00:47So hopefully next week it will move the ball forward in this effort.
00:51Is the United States going to participate in those conversations?
00:53I will. We will let you know if the President plans to send a representative.
00:57I'm not tracking that at this time.
01:00Kelly in the back.
