E-bikes crackdown: London phone snatchers face having cycles and scooters crushed hours after offence
Transcript
00:00Lots of residents contact me about illegal modified e-bikes, speeding, running red lights,
00:07occasionally even links to organised crime like phone theft and robbery.
00:11So this operation is really important, firstly as a deterrent,
00:14to show people that we have a law in place and that needs to be enforced,
00:18and secondly to seize those bikes or scooters that have been illegally modified
00:22so they can be taken away and crushed.
00:24And the legislation the government's opposing to deal with e-bikes
00:29and e-scooters, how will that impact people in London?
00:32How will that help stop crime?
00:34Well it's something I've been pushing for,
00:36so in the Crime and Policing Bill going through Parliament at the moment,
00:40it proposes reducing from two weeks to 48 hours,
00:44the period of time for the police to, if they seize a bike, to crush it,
00:49and it will also reduce the threshold for seizing bikes.
00:52So in the past they'd have to give a warning,
00:54now they can take it if they suspect there is some sort of criminal activity.
00:57So again, it's about enforcement and it's about a deterrent,
01:01but this is a high-volume crime that really affects Londoners,
01:04so I'm really hoping this new offence in the Crime and Policing Bill
01:07and the new powers will help the Met to make Londoners' lives safer.
01:12Thank you very much for the mission.
