President Trump pushed back after being mocked on Wall Street with the nickname "TACO trade"—short for "Trump Always Chickens Out"—a dig at his inconsistent tariff strategies. During a press exchange on May 28, Trump defended delaying steep tariffs on China and the EU, calling the jab unfair. The term has gained traction among analysts critical of his tariff flip-flops, citing economic uncertainty for markets and businesses. Despite the criticism, Trump maintains that his decisions are strategic, aimed at securing better deals while avoiding unnecessary economic damage.

00:06Because I gave the European Union a 50% tax.
00:12A new term called the taco train, they're saying Trump always chickens out on the tariff threats, and that's why markets are higher.
00:18A new term called the taco train, they're saying Trump always chickens out on the tariff threats, and that's why markets are higher this week.
00:24What's your response to that?
00:26I kick out.
00:26Chicken out.
00:27Oh, and then I chickened out, I've never heard that.
00:31You mean because I reduced China from 145% that I set down to 100 and then down to another
00:38number?
00:39And I said, you have to open up your whole country, and because I gave the European Union
00:45a 50% tax tariff, and they called up and they said, please let's meet right now, please
00:52let's meet right now.
00:54And I said, okay, I'll give you until July 9th, I actually asked them, I said, what's
00:59the date?
01:00Because they weren't willing to meet.
01:01And after I did what I did, they said, we'll meet anytime you want.
01:06And we have an end date of July 9th.
01:10You call that chickening out?
01:11Because we have $14 trillion now invested, committed to investing when Biden didn't have
01:17practically anything.
01:20This country was dying.
01:21You know, we have the hottest country anywhere in the world.
01:23I went to Saudi Arabia, the king told me.
01:25He said, we have the hottest country in the world right now.
01:30Six months ago, this country was stone cold dead.
01:34We had a dead country.
01:35We had a country people didn't think it was going to survive, and you ask a nasty question
01:39like that.
01:40It's called negotiation.
01:42You said a number.
01:43And if you go down, you know, if I said a number at a ridiculous high number, and I go
01:47down a little bit, you know, a little bit, they want me to hold that number, 145% tariff.
01:54Even I said, man, that really got up.
01:56You know how it got?
01:58Because of fentanyl and many other things, and you added it up.
02:01I said, where are we now?
02:03We're at 145%.
02:04I said, whoa, that's high.
02:07That's high.
02:08They were doing no business whatsoever, and they were having a lot of problems.
02:10We were very nice to China.
02:11I don't know if they're going to be nice to us, but we were very nice to China.
02:15And in many ways, I think we really helped China tremendously because, you know, they were
02:19having great difficulty because we were basically going cold turkey with China.
02:24We were doing no business because of the tariff, because it was so high.
02:28But I knew that.
02:29But don't ever say what you said.
02:32That's a nasty question.
