Transcript
00:00Live in my house, I'll be your shelter. Just pay me back with 1,000 kisses.
00:09Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best, most romantic kisses from Broadway musicals, both on stage and on screen. Spoilers to come.
00:19I've lost all resistance and crossed some borderline.
00:30Number 10. Usnavi and Vanessa in the Heights
00:33This ensemble cast features many love stories, including scholarship student Nina's romance with her father's employee, Benny.
00:53For the most part, though, Usnavi and Vanessa's rocky relationship is the focus of the show, with both of them trying to make each other jealous.
01:01When Vanessa learns that Usnavi helped her get her apartment, Vanessa finally realizes her feelings towards Usnavi.
01:07And it's honestly the sweetest thing anyone ever did for me.
01:13Now, what can I say or do to possibly repay you for your kindness?
01:19The song Champagne is a sweet comic number as Vanessa flirts with an oblivious Usnavi and tries to persuade him not to go to the Dominican Republic.
01:28Finally, Vanessa gives up on subtlety and goes for it during the musical pause.
01:32Talk about musical perfection.
01:34Number 9. Julie and Billy, Carousel
01:48How you'd feel, or anything?
01:51I don't know how I'd know.
01:54Ah.
01:55Just the same. I know how I'd...
01:57How it'd be if I loved you.
02:00This is a nod to a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.
02:04This bench scene in particular is one of the most famous of all musical theater.
02:09Here, Julie and Billy hide their attraction to each other, even in song, culminating in the poignantly sweet If I Loved You.
02:15Longing to tell you, but afraid and shy, I'd let my golden trancers pass me by.
02:36When the instrumental reprise of the melody swells up, the two finally close the scene with a kiss.
02:41The relationship between a steel mill worker and carousel barker is definitely problematic by any modern definition,
02:47but the power of Rodgers' music can't be overstated.
02:51I love you.
02:55Number 8. Christine and Raoul, The Phantom of the Opera
03:02All I want is freedom, a world with no more night, and you always beside me to hold me and to hide me.
03:16Sorry, Christine and Phantom shippers.
03:18While Christine's redemptive kiss to the Phantom is unforgettable and definitely significant,
03:23we're looking for high romance here.
03:25And so, the prize belongs to Christine and Raoul in their beautiful love duet, All I Ask of You.
03:30While giving comfort to Christine amid the Phantom's reign of terror,
03:48and her requiting his feelings, leads to this passionate kiss.
03:52The sweeping romance of this moment, coupled with the orchestral reprise of Andrew Lloyd Webber's melody,
03:58is an undeniably winning one.
04:00It's a marvelous duet, and of course, the newly made lovers kiss again at the end.
04:04Love me, that's all I ask of you.
04:24Number 7. Jenna and Dr. Pomader, Waitress.
04:28Some romances are messier than others.
04:46Waitress Jenna's life is not a bed of roses.
04:49When she finds herself pregnant by her boorishly abusive husband, Earl,
04:52she schedules an appointment with Dr. Pomader, who's sympathetic to her situation and charmed by her epic pie-making skills.
04:59While Jenna develops a plan to leave her husband by entering a pie-making contest,
05:04she and Pomader are unable to resist their attraction to each other.
05:07Whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:08What do you want?
05:09I want to see you again. I want to see you again.
05:10I want to talk to you, like, somewhere outside of here.
05:11Can we have coffee together or something?
05:13I can't have coffee. It's on the bad food list you gave me.
05:16What kind of doctor are you?
05:18Their comic number, Bad Idea, all about how wrong it is for them to have an affair,
05:23also features a truly passionate kiss.
05:25Without question, it was a good idea to have this number.
05:29Let's see this through.
05:32It's a pretty good thing I feel.
05:36Me and me and you.
05:39Rodgers and Hammerstein struck again with their musical version of this classic fairy tale.
05:53My head started reeling, you gave me the feeling the room had no ceiling or floor.
06:01In true musical fashion, Cinderella and her prince meet during the ball and share a sweet Rodgers waltz ten minutes ago.
06:08But it's in their proper love duet that things start to get really romantic.
06:11Am I making believe I see in you a man too perfect to be really true?
06:27At the end of the number, they share a kiss.
06:30The musical has been adapted for the stage and changed drastically throughout the years,
06:34from its libretto to its song order.
06:36But this beautiful moment is an indelible part of the show that never fails to move us.
06:41Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream?
06:48Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
06:59Number 5. Angel and Collins.
07:01Rent.
07:02This bohemian couple gives us all the feels.
07:04I've been hearing violins all night.
07:08Anything to do with me?
07:10Are we a thing?
07:13Darling, we're everything.
07:15One of the most popular love songs from musical theater, I'll Cover You,
07:19is a duet with drag queen Angel and anarchist Professor Collins.
07:23In it, they promise to love and support each other through thick and thin.
07:26I think they meant it when they said you can't spy love.
07:30Now I know you can rent it.
07:33My new lease, you are my love.
07:36Fun and uplifting, Angel and Collins' impeccable harmonies make this song even sweeter.
07:41And of course, in true musical theater fashion, it ends with a tender kiss.
07:45It's a heartwarming love song that gets a heart-wrenching reprise in Act 2.
07:49But let's not talk about that.
07:50Let's just enjoy the moment while it lasts.
07:53I've longed to discover something as true as this is.
08:01With so many musical love songs, we still return to Rodgers and Hammerstein.
08:10This time, their sound of music.
08:11Adapted from the Broadway stage into a blockbuster film,
08:15the relationship between Maria and Captain Georg von Trapp has always been fraught with tension,
08:19usually of the erotic kind.
08:21Your face is all red, is it?
08:25I don't suppose I'm used to dancing.
08:27In this scene, they finally give in to each other's attraction
08:32in a sweeping orchestral reprise of the title song.
08:35The film also replaces an ordinary couple with an original song, Something Good.
08:39For here you are standing there loving me
08:46Whether or not you should
08:52Whichever song it is, the end result is the same.
08:57A cathartic kiss between the two.
08:58This is no ordinary couple, but it's definitely something good.
09:18Number 3.
09:19Tony and Maria, West Side Story
09:21Of course, these Romeo and Juliet analogs would have one of the most memorable kisses.
09:25Interestingly enough, Tony and Maria's written kisses are few and far between.
09:30So much to believe.
09:33You're not making a joke.
09:37I have not yet learned how to joke that way.
09:41I think now I never will.
09:44There is their meeting kiss during the dance at the gym, for one thing.
09:47But to us, the most powerful kiss comes in the film version of the musical,
09:50where Tony and Maria sing the classic Somewhere as a love duet, omitting the dream ballet entirely.
10:06Romance-wise, it's a great change, allowing Tony and Maria to envision a world of peace,
10:11away from the violence, where they can both be free.
10:14They kiss amidst Leonard Bernstein's funeral procession underscoring,
10:18making this scene a bittersweet one indeed.
10:20Somehow, someday, someday.
10:27Number 2.
10:41Audrey and Seymour, Little Shop of Horrors
10:43This horrific shop has a killer love duet and, of course, kiss.
10:48Show me your face
10:49Clean as the morning
10:51I know things were bad
10:54But now they're okay
10:58Seymour and Audrey are working together in a plant shop
11:01when Seymour discovers a carnivorous plant that quickly grows sentient.
11:05When Audrey's terrible boyfriend, Oren, becomes the plant's latest food,
11:09Audrey confesses her guilty relief at his demise.
11:11Would it be so terrible if something had happened to him?
11:14Seymour had a thing to say
11:18Well, would it?
11:22It wouldn't be terrible at all
11:24It'd be a miracle
11:26She and Seymour express their romantic feelings for each other in this duet.
11:30Seymour promises to protect Audrey
11:32and they seal their love with a kiss in the climax.
11:35It goes to show that love can blossom even in the midst of alien plant terrorism.
11:39So romantic.
11:40Suddenly, listen more
11:43Suddenly, see it more
11:45Show me your hair
11:47Yes, you can
11:48Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
11:55Lauren and Charlie, kinky boots, wear suckers for a well-placed mid-number kiss.
12:00Wait, wait! Hold it right there, buster!
12:02Are you saying you'd like to take me out?
12:04Yes.
12:05Are you saying that you and Nicola are through?
12:06Yes.
12:07And that you're actually available?
12:08Yes.
12:08And you still like girls?
12:10Yes.
12:12Get me out!
12:14Tracy and Link
12:15Hairspray
12:15We can't stop this kiss and we don't want to
12:18This may not be the bright moment, but if I don't kiss you right now, I might just bust a gut.
12:26Well, we wouldn't want you to hurt yourself, no, would we?
12:29That's my girl!
12:30That's my girl!
12:32Christian and Satine
12:34Moulin Rouge
12:35Come what may, this kiss will haunt us until our dying day.
12:39Come what may
12:43Curly and Lori, Oklahoma
12:51We'll always say they're in love.
12:53Hey!
12:55Hey!
12:55Does anybody out around this yard to get in my voice?
12:58Oh, I'd like for you to know that Laura Williams is my girl!
13:03Hey!
13:04And she's went and got me to ask her to marry me!
13:08They hear you all the way to Catuzzi!
13:10Vendla and Melchior, Spring Awakening
13:12This kiss awakens something in us.
13:15It's just, it's...
13:15What?
13:16Sinful?
13:17No!
13:17We'll be forgiven
13:19I believe
13:20I don't know
13:20Why?
13:21I believe
13:22I believe
13:22Because it's good
13:23Because it makes us feel something

13:43Number 1. Elphaba and Fierro, Wicked
13:46So how do I fall when I'll do your spell?
13:54Fierroba shippers rejoice.
13:56Like many musical couples, Elphaba and Fierro's relationship is filled with both dissension and tension as they realize, and hide, their attraction to each other.
14:05When they reunite years later, Elphaba is an outlaw activist and Fierro leads the hunt for her capture, but Fierro does the right thing and escapes with her, breaking off the engagement with Glinda.
14:15Now fully together, Elphaba and Fierro confess their love for each other in this steamy Forbidden Love duet.
14:21Give me how you want to
14:23And she'll run for each time
14:29The song builds to a great finish, but it's Elphaba's confession and subsequent kiss that truly make this scene.
14:35It's a satisfying arc that never fails to get the audience cheering.
