00:00I have been changed for good, but only one that mattered.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're breaking down our return trip to Oz with the first trailer for Wicked for Good.
00:13We're discussing plot points from the stage show and The Wizard of Oz, so if you haven't seen either, especially in their entirety, be gone before somebody drops some spoilers on you.
00:23This is between us, the wizard, and I.
00:26Remember Part 1?
00:29Since there's nearly a year between Part 1 and For Good, it makes sense that the new trailer is starting to connect a few dots, especially things we glimpsed in the first movie or just in the trailers so far.
00:41Take that crack in Glinda's window right at the start of the trailer. It tips her off that Elphaba's nearby.
00:46Elphaba Throb, I know you're out here. Just come in before the monkeys spot you.
00:51But how would she know it's her? Remember, we've seen that crack before, and it's pretty much identical.
01:01You know, I asked really nicely, and I saved you the cold door.
01:03I don't know, I've never known.
01:05We also get a glimpse of the munchkins putting up the Beware the Wicked Witch poster we saw during No One Mourns the Wicked, followed by Glinda looking like she's about to address the crowd after Elphaba's melting.
01:28If you've seen the stage show, you'll know this brings us to our full-circle moment. Then there's that shot of Elphaba's hand on the yellow bricks, which has been teased before.
01:38Now we know how the famous brick road got its color.
01:40Wait, just go back one, please.
01:43The yellow relay?
01:44Yes.
01:45Huh.
01:46It just says road to me.
01:48So we imagine this is when Elphaba first returns to the Emerald City, or perhaps Munchkinland, and sees that at least the wizard was true to his word about something.
01:57No one believed in you more than I did.
01:59We already know Elphaba and Glinda end up going their separate ways, and while we're not spoiling how or why, their friendship definitely hits a bump in part two.
02:07So the moment where we see Elphaba pick up the brochure Glinda gave her before she left for the Emerald City stings just a bit.
02:14It's a reminder that no matter what happens, they'll always have a handprint on the other's heart.
02:19And the fact that it's followed by a clip of For Good makes it hit even harder, but more on that later.
02:24Oh, and that poppy field scene with Elphaba and Glinda.
02:36Remember, we've seen that before.
02:38Turns out it's part of a longer deleted scene.
02:41We still don't know exactly where it fits, but with two new songs written for the film, it's a safe bet it's tied to one of them.
02:47It's time for both of us to fly!
02:53Storyline and plot points.
02:55It will be nearly impossible to keep this part completely spoiler-free, so if you're not familiar with Act 2 of Wicked, you may want to skip ahead.
03:03There's no going back.
03:05One thing part one did brilliantly was fleshing out some of the stage show's most memorable beats.
03:10And it looks like we're getting more of that in For Good, especially in those new shots of Elphaba in the forest.
03:15While it might be part of No Good Deed, it also seems like a continuation of what we saw back in her shiz days.
03:21Except now, instead of learning magic in the classroom, she's mastering the grimmery in Exile.
03:27Once you learn to harness your emotion, the sky's the limit.
03:34We also know that Elphaba's primary goal was to free the animals.
03:38My heart's desire is for you to help the animals. Something bad is happening to them and they need you.
03:44Indeed, we see her surrounded by flying monkeys, who, as anyone who's seen the show knows, was her first real success in standing up to the wizard.
03:53Another shot shows a crowd of animals charging out of the palace, possibly just released from captivity.
03:59Depending on where this falls in the story, there's a chance Glinda's the one who makes it happen as a final tribute to her friend.
04:06Or, and hear us out, are those the same pink flowers from Glinda and Fierro's wedding?
04:11Perhaps Elphaba does succeed in freeing some animals, and their stampede through the palace is what stops anyone from saying I do.
04:18I just wish I could... What? You wish what? I wish there was something I could do.
04:25The Elphaba and Glinda friendship still feels deliberately underplayed in this trailer.
04:29I've heard it said that people come into our lives.
04:35There are brief glimpses, but they're keeping most of that dynamic close to the chest for now.
04:40What does get more screen time is the love triangle between Elphaba, Glinda, and Fierro.
04:45For a while there, I thought you changed.
04:48I have changed.
04:49That image of Glinda in a wedding dress from the Part 1 teaser is back, and still raises as many questions now as it did back then.
04:56There's a sense that the film might be expanding on this moment in a way that complicates what we thought we knew.
05:01Cause getting your dreams, it's strange but it seems a little complicated.
05:10Fierro's body language at the altar says a lot.
05:13Is this actually happening, or is it a fantasy sequence?
05:17We'd say the footage in the trailer strongly supports our earlier theory, but we guess we'll have to wait and see.
05:23There's also that intense scene where Fierro, now fully part of the wizard's guard, confronts Elphaba with a gun.
05:30Then he turns it, and we see who he points it at next.
05:33It's a huge reveal for them to include here, especially given how much the story hinges on that particular shift.
05:39Clearly they're trusting the audience to either already know, or be intrigued enough not to mind.
05:45I think about that day a lot.
05:47So do I.
05:55Oh, me too. Oh, me too, me too.
05:59Mhm.
06:00The for good scene makes a brief but emotional appearance too, which is fitting since the film takes its title from that song.
06:06Also, the trailer shows how everything circles back to where the story began.
06:10One notable absence here is Nessa Rose and Bach.
06:13Well, the latter is debatable.
06:15See that tragically beautiful girl.
06:18The one in the chair.
06:21It seems so unfair.
06:23We should go on a spree.
06:25And not she.
06:26Their storyline comes to a head in The Wicked Witch of the East, which was famously left off the original Broadway cast recording because it gave away too much.
06:34The trailer seems to be following the same logic.
06:37It's possible they'll show up more later, just like they did with the last set of trailers.
06:42My Nessa Rose is very precious to me.
06:45So you see, you take good care of her.
06:50I understand.
06:51Over the Rainbow.
06:53Act 2 is where The Wizard of Oz and Wicked finally collide.
06:56And the trailer is already giving us glimpses of that.
06:59I'm off to see the wizard.
07:00We've already seen Dorothy's silver shoes and her visit to the wizard with her companions.
07:05This time, though, we get more.
07:07From what looks like the start of her yellow brick road journey out of Munchkinland to a proper look at at least one of her friends.
07:13Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.
07:18The lion's clearly a bit trembly.
07:20Where have we seen that before?
07:21But the real moment for fans is the scarecrow.
07:24Or at least what we can see of him.
07:26Just take a second to clock his outfit.
07:28It shows up more than once.
07:30That's all we're saying.
07:31I've been thinking.
07:32Yeah.
07:33I heard.
07:34Of course, Dorothy travels to Oz via tornado.
07:37And here we actually see it take form.
07:40Or should we say, conjured up, by Madame Morrible.
07:43She did say weather was her specialty.
07:45Not to fret.
07:47Weather is my specialty.
07:49Another familiar moment comes with Elphaba writing warnings in the sky.
07:53It's a brilliant nod to the Wizard of Oz.
07:55And a reminder that when Elphaba has something to say, the sky's the limit.
08:00Literally.
08:01It's the witch.
08:02She's followed us here.
08:03Surrender.
08:04Dorothy.
08:05Dorothy?
08:06Who's Dorothy?
08:08But it's not just the Wizard of Oz that's being honored here.
08:12Glinda's bubble makes a grand return.
08:14And though it's a quick shot, it looks like her reunion with Elphaba could be set at Kiyamoko,
08:19which as fans of the novel or show know, is Fiyero's family castle.
08:23We also get a brief glimpse of Glinda holding the grimmery,
08:26which we know Elphaba eventually gives to her in the emotional crux of the story.
08:30Glinda's dresses also deserve a moment.
08:46Paul Tazewell's work continues to be stunning,
08:49but the costume choices may also hint at a slightly different timeline
08:52than what we've seen on stage.

09:10Musical Moments
09:12Okay, now let's put a little music in this movie musical.
09:15Not even 30 seconds in and we're already hit with our first taste of no good deed.
09:20And it's just enough to send a chill straight down our spine.
09:23It's one of a handful of songs we hear in the trailer,
09:29but that doesn't mean the musical moments stop there.
09:32If you've watched this trailer on loop like some of us, hi,
09:35you've probably started matching visuals to the act two numbers we know by heart.
09:39The wonderful wizard of Oz.
09:48There's a shot of Fierro leading the guards that feels very thank goodness adjacent.
09:53No Good Deed makes another appearance,
09:55but the real surprise is that shot of Elphaba, Glinda and the wizard dancing together in the palace.
10:00In the stage show, Elphaba only comes out after the wizard clears the room ahead of Wonderful.
10:05So if this really is that scene, and Glinda's involved now, we're certainly intrigued.
10:10Wonderful. And they said, Wonderful. Believe me, it's hard to resist.
10:21We also see the mob coming for Elphaba, which looks like March of the Witch Hunters.
10:25But the emotional core of the trailer is, of course, for good.
10:29They've given us just enough of it to completely wreck us.
10:46And if this little sliver already has us clutching our emerald green hearts,
10:50imagine what the full scene is going to do in the theater.
10:53We'll be crying buckets, like enough to melt a whole coven of witches.
10:57Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting!
11:00Oh, what a world! What a world!
11:03As fans know, the film introduces two brand new songs, one for each leading lady.
11:08So Ari and I both have new songs in it.
11:10Steven Schwartz wrote two new songs and we did some collaboration on it.
11:14So we're definitely singing in it.
11:16According to Vanity Fair, the trailer's opening moment is pulled from Elphaba's new number,
11:21co-written by Cynthia Erivo and described as, quote,
11:24a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.
11:27Glinda's new solo is called Girl in the Bubble, which might be where the poppy field scene lands.
11:32We'll find out soon enough.
11:34If anyone knows of a shortcut down the yellow brick road that gets us to November faster, we're all ears.
11:39Because I knew you.
11:42You're the only friend I ever had.
11:44Because I knew you.
11:47And I've had so many friends.
11:49I have been changed for good.
11:53But only one that mattered.
11:55What has you most excited for Wicked For Good?
11:58And what questions has this trailer raised?
12:00Let us know in the comments.
12:02You can say I've been changed for the greater.
