00:00After nearly 60 years of service, Southwest Airlines is officially getting rid of something
00:04its customers love, free checked bags. Starting May 28th, the airline will charge $35 for a first
00:10checked bag and $45 for the second. Free checked bags have been so synonymous with Southwest that
00:16the slogan, bags fly free, became part of its advertising. But other airlines raked in more
00:20than $7 billion in baggage fees last year, and now Southwest is looking to cash in.
00:25When Southwest first announced the change back in March, CEO Bob Jordan said,
00:29we have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer
00:33segments we don't compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our
00:38shareholders expect. Southwest will also make another big change in 2026 when it will end its
