A costume designer couldn't believe her eyes when she returned home after 14 years and discovered her prom dress in a thrift store – before buying it back and repurposing into a stunning modern design. Having moved back home to Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada, after more than a decade in Toronto, the last thing Jillea expected to find in a local thrift store was her 2010 prom dress. Jillea and her friends come from such a remote area they had a group chat at the time, making sure they didn't buy the same prom dress from one of the local boutiques. Fortunately for Jillea, though, she stopped off in a shop in Miami while on a cruise and, certain no-one else would have a dress like it, picked "a massive, ruffled, sparkly, blue cheetah print dress." After her prom, Jillea kept the dress for a few years, before selling it online in the hopes of buying a camera that would help her pursue an arts career. Years went by before she returned home and headed out to purchase some materials for a costume she was working on. With the town's fabric shop now closed down, she decided to head to a local thrift store, where she saw her dress hanging at the end of a rack.

00:00This costume designer found her prom dress in a thrift store 14 years later and transformed it
00:05into a modern work of art. Julia is from a super remote town, so didn't want to show up to prom
00:10in the same dress as her friends. She found this gem in a Miami store, a big, ruffled, sparkly blue
00:16cheetah print dress. She kept the dress for a few years, but eventually sold it to save for a camera
00:22to help with her art career. Years passed, and after moving back home from the city,
00:26she needed materials for a costume project, so hit up a local thrift store. And then she saw it,
00:31hanging at the end of a rack, the blue cheetah print, the ruffles, and tagged at $24.99.
00:38I'm buying it. I'm gonna buy it. I'm gonna make something sick out of it. I'm gonna make
00:42something really cool out of it. This is my prom dress. Jaleah knew she had to give the dress new
00:48life, and after recently buying some beautiful antique pottery, she painted a scene from one
00:53right onto the dress before adding some beautiful gold details. And here it is, from a massive sparkly
01:06prom dress to a modern work of art.
