00:00In 1506, an incident occurred in Frankfurt. A trader loses 800 gold. A passing carpenter happens to find the merchant's wallet. The carpenter was very religious and did not tell anyone that he had found the wallet, thinking that after losing so much money the owner would definitely look for it.
00:18The next day the carpenter goes to church. The priest announces that a merchant who has set foot in Frankfurt has lost 800 gulden, and whoever finds it will receive a reward of 100 gulden. At this the carpenter brings back the money and hands it to the priest.
00:35The merchant arrives and takes the wallet, but refuses to give the carpenter the promised 100 gold. He only gives him 5 goldens. The carpenter demands that the merchant keep his promise, but the greedy merchant claims that there were 900 gold in the wallet, not 800, so that he does not have to pay the reward. He claims that the carpenter took some money out of the wallet.
00:59The priest supports the carpenter and says that he knows the carpenter and that he is an honest man. He would never do such a thing. The argument escalates, and the priest takes the merchant and the carpenter to the courthouse in Frankfurt.
01:12The judge begins the trial and asks the merchant to put his hand on the Bible and swear that he lost 900 gold. The merchant unhesitatingly puts his hand on the Bible and swears. The judge also asks the carpenter to swear that he received 800 gold. A carpenter also swears by placing his hand on the Bible.
01:32Everyone waits for the judge's decision. The judge says everything is clear, the carpenter got 800 gold and the merchant lost 900 gold. Therefore, the wallet the carpenter found cannot be the merchant's. Therefore, since no owner has come forward, it is the carpenter's money. And the merchant can continue to look for his 900 gold.
01:55A greedy businessman, who wanted to kill the right of a poor carpenter, was punished by a fair judge.
