Hong Kong university issues open invitation for Harvard students as US blocks foreign enrollment

Students and officials at Hong Kong's University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on Monday said they would welcome Harvard students after the US government barred the university from enrolling foreign students.

HKUST announced on Friday, May 23, that it would extend an open invitation to international undergraduate and postgraduate students at Harvard, as well as those holding confirmed offers, to continue their studies at the Hong Kong institution.

00:00I'm quite optimistic to a two-year-old school to open the door for the transit and at the same
00:23time I think not just HUST but the global academy like all the university may have to stay strong
00:31together because we need to tell others what we are thinking about
00:37so I think now the US is becoming very is becoming less welcoming towards international students
00:59seeing what has happened at at Harvard and also other universities regarding the protests and
01:05people getting arrested so I think China has been more welcoming in that regards towards
01:11international students like they gave me a full scholarship and so in that sense I
01:15think it's kind of shifting more towards China
01:17in times of need like this it is really important you know being a member of the academic community I
01:41think you know we're in this together essentially you know we are a global commit community and I
01:48think in times like this it's important that we do step up I think we we many of us you know follow
01:54very similar hold very similar values and so this is a chance for us we feel that we can open up our
02:02our resources to help these students in need so that they can continue their academic journey
02:14and so we've been providing individualized counseling and so on for these students and it came to a point
02:21where we felt that we needed to issue a public statement to really reaffirm our commitment to be an open academic
02:31haven for those students who filed felt that their academic studies were unable to maybe proceed or
02:39perhaps they felt that it could not continue as they planned
02:43we do believe that good universities will continue to strive for things like academic excellence innovation collaboration but I think what we do see of course is that there may be the rise of some other academic talent hubs coming up away from the
03:13traditional sort of countries or sectors and of course I think now for a lot of international students one of the things that perhaps is bearing on their decision when they choose a institution is things like stability so in addition to academic reputation
