Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Sir Jeffrey Cheah Honorary Distinguished Professor at Sunway University said Asean must strengthen its cooperation within the region as well as strengthen its position as a group with other partners in order to leverage its position within the region.
He was speaking at the “Asean amidst Shifting Global Order” dialogue session with political leaders, foreign dignitaries and corporate figures ahead of the Asean Summit on Monday.
00:00Professor Jeffrey Sachs says in order to leverage its position within the region, ASEAN needs to do two basic things as it heads to the summit on Monday.
00:11One is to strengthen the relations within the ASEAN group, and the second is to strengthen ASEAN's relations as a group with other partners.
00:23And in this week's summit, China will be a major partner, and the GCC, the Gulf Cooperation Council, will be a major partner.
00:34So these are two major economic partnerships for ASEAN. I think a lot of deals will come forward from the diplomacy that's underway in the next few days.
00:48He was speaking to reporters after speaking at the ASEAN Amid Shifting Global Order dialogue session at Sunway Resort Hotel in Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur.
00:57During this event, Professor Sachs, a world-renowned economist and sustainable development expert, addressed a range of global issues with profound economic, geopolitical and trade implications for ASEAN.
01:10Among those who attended were former and current political leaders, foreign dignitaries, as well as key corporate figures from various industries.
01:18Besides delivering his address, he also fielded questions from the floor, covering different topics from politics to education, economics to society, human history to future outlooks, and even race to religion.
01:31The event was hosted by Sunway University founder and Chancellor, Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Chia, who thanked Professor Sachs for his insights into potential solutions for a sustainable future and a happier planet.
