The East Asia Summit (EAS) has grown increasingly relevant and crucial over the past two decades, especially in the face of today’s complex global challenges, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Delivering his opening remarks at the EAS on Friday (July 10), Mohamad stressed the importance of upholding the Summit’s core purpose—promoting principled engagement and fostering consensus on shared regional and global concerns.

He also reaffirmed Asean’s support for all peace efforts, including those related to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, grounded in international law, humanitarian principles, and the United Nations Charter.

00:26They envases the East Asia Summit to be an open, inclusive, transparent and outward-looking forum
00:34in which is trying to strengthen global norms and universally recognized values
00:39with ASEAN as the driving force, working in funds and other participants of the East Asia Summit.
00:48In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, peace, stability and prosperity are our collective and shared privilege.
00:58We must continuously work together to ensure they are safeguarded and progress.
01:05Two decades later, the East Asia Summit stands more relevant and vital than ever.
01:11Today's world faces a complex way of crisis that jeopardizes global peace, shared prosperity and well-being of people everywhere.
01:21From the outbreak of countries and rising great power competition to economic fragmentation, rapid technological shifts and transnational security tracks.
01:33These global and regional dynamics are shifting rapidly, testing the strength of our resolve and institutions to clarity, the clarity of our wisdom and the resilience of our cooperation.
01:48It is thus critical that we sustain the purpose of the EAS, promote principle, engagement, and advance common ground on issues of shared concern.
02:01In this context, Malaysia appreciates the EAS participating countries' support,
02:12while our priority has shared to foster strategic trust through diplomacy, goodwill, and respect for international law, including through this platform.
02:23With the non-binary nominal GDP of approximately US$68 trillion, the countries in this form today account for over half of the global economy.
02:37With the economic wave to reinforce, the EAS, strategic importance, not only as a platform for dialogue, but as a powerful engine for cooperation that broadens shared prosperity and enhances socio-economic resilience.
02:53In this regard, peace, stability, and predictability are essential.
02:59The many conflicts around the world must be effectively addressed, and their untouled devastation and suffering relief.
03:08ASEAN welcomes and supports all efforts towards peace, including Ukraine and Middle East.
03:15Their efforts should be based on international law, the national humanitarian law, and their international law.
03:22The longest country of modern history rooted in the unjust and illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory must be brought to an end.
03:32Eighty years of impunity have emboldened Israel to the extent of openly committing genocide, including through an establishment that includes babies and children.
03:43This is unacceptable.

03:46It must not be allowed to continue.
03:49It must be stopped.
03:51Excellencies, let us mark this 20th of the East Teja Summit with a pledge to take decisive actions to end all conflicts, and to do so guided by principles of justice, fairness, and equality, and humanity.
04:08ASEAN counts on the constructive engagement and commitment of all partners towards ensuring lasting peace, shared prosperity, and continued progress forward.
