The Gunman came across an old diary that details the reason for the invention of the famous Colt Walker pistol.

00:00I am the gunman, and I am here to tell you the truth about the Colt Walker.
00:07I'm sure most of you gun lovers out there know the story behind the Colt Walker pistol.
00:12It was a collaboration between Texas Ranger Captain Samuel Walker and Samuel Colt.
00:18Mr. Colt, I want a new gun.
00:21Show me the money.
00:22Walker wanted a more powerful handgun, one that was easier to load, and they could fire six rounds before reloading.
00:31The Republic of Texas had purchased 180 Colt Pattersons for the Texas Navy in 1839.
00:38After the Navy had disbanded, they were turned over to the Texas Rangers.
00:46Now, the Patterson was a failure for Colt.
00:49It had to be disassembled to load and only carried five rounds.
00:54Walker knew they needed a more powerful gun, something better, something that was easier to load.
01:01So he met with Samuel Colt to design a brand new gun, the most powerful gun manufactured in its time.
01:11Now, I just recently came across an old journal dated in 1844 written by Sergeant Jake Savage,
01:19telling what he says is the real story behind the Walker.
01:25I think I might believe him.
01:26I think I might believe him.
01:31I think I might believe him.
01:32Beneath a scorched Texas sky, the sun beat down relentless, a bleached skull.
01:39Three Texas Rangers rode.
01:41Captain Samuel Walker, grizzled, eyes narrowed against the glare.
01:46Corporal Billy Bonney, barely a man, sweat staining his shirt.
01:50Myself, Sergeant Jake Savage, riding with my rifle across my saddle, we rode for days.
02:00Each carried a Colt Patterson pistol, chambered with 5.36 caliber balls of lead.
02:06The land, parched and cracked, offered no solace.
02:11Only the distant mountains, blue and hazy, promised a sliver of hope.
02:15Our quarry, a band of Comanche Indians with stolen army horses, the tracks led north, toward the badlands.
02:24A maze of canyons, gullies and arroyos.
02:27Land forgotten by God, perfect for hiding, perfect for an ambush.
02:34Captain Walker felt it.
02:36Years of fighting Indians and Mexicans honed his senses.
02:39He smelled something feral.
02:41Hold up!
02:42Corporal Billy looked relieved.
02:44I carefully scanned the horizon.
02:51Captain, what's wrong?
02:54Walker didn't answer.
02:55He listened.
02:57To the silence.
02:58More unnerving than any war cry.
03:01Later that night, we found the Indians.
03:04Camped by a dry riverbed, huddled around a dying fire.
03:08Walker drew his Colt Patterson.
03:10Don't do anything stupid.
03:12Billy and myself fanned out, flanking the Indians.
03:16One of them, a young brave, looked up.
03:19Defiance in his eyes.
03:20We only took what we needed.
03:22Walker cocked the hammer of his Colt dragoon.
03:25Stolen horses ain't necessities.
03:27Now move.
03:28As one, the Indians stood.
03:30But instead of fear, their eyes held a strange, unsettling light.
03:39Billy stumbled back.
03:42A werewolf.
03:43The other Indians followed, transforming in a horrifying ballet of snapping bones.
03:49Walker didn't answer.
03:57He raised his Colt.
03:59He didn't believe in monsters, but he believed in lead.
04:03The first shot caught the lead werewolf in the chest.
04:08The bullet crippled, but didn't kill.
04:14Walker and myself fired.
04:17But doing little to slow the onslaught.
04:20Billy stood frozen.
04:22Eyes wide with terror.
04:24Run!
04:25Walker yelled.
04:26We couldn't win this fight.
04:27Not in the open and with these guns.
04:29We had to reach the mountains fast and find cover.
04:33We ran.
04:34Horses abandoned with the werewolves in hot pursuit.
04:41My legs burned.
04:43Legs screamed for mercy.
04:46Fear lent me speed.
04:47The landscape became our only ally.
04:50Twisting.
04:52Turning.
04:53Scrambling over rocks.
04:54Through narrow passages.
04:59Ahead, Walker saw a cave entrance.
05:04In there.
05:05Walker gasped.
05:18The cave was small and damp.
05:21The air thick with the smell of bat guano.
05:24And something else.
05:25Something ancient.
05:27Walker didn't care.
05:29It was shelter.
05:30For now.
05:32He barricaded the entrance with rocks and fallen branches.
05:36Praying it would hold.
05:38Billy sat huddled in a corner.
05:41Eyes vacant.
05:42I checked our dwindling ammunition.
05:44Knowing it would do little good.
05:45All through the night.
05:47The werewolves attacked.
05:49Throwing themselves against the barricade.
05:53Clawing.
05:54Scratching.
05:55Their howls echoing like thunder in the confined space.
05:58Each assault chipped away at our defenses.
06:03Walker fought with the ferocity of a cornered animal.
06:07I shot at them with my remaining bullets.
06:10With no results.
06:12The Colt Patterson is slow to load.
06:14You have to take it apart before loading each cylinder.
06:17Knock the wedge out.
06:18Then pry the barrel off using the tool.
06:21Put the hammer at half cock so the cylinder will spin freely.
06:26Pour the powder into each chamber.
06:28Get the .36 caliber round balls and put them above the powder charge.
06:35Use this tool to ram the ball down in the cylinder.
06:43Put the caps on and reassemble the gun.
06:49Billy, overcoming his terror, used his knife to fend off a werewolf that broke through.
06:55Paying a heavy price, dawn broke.
06:58Painting the sky in hues of blood orange and bruised purple.
07:01Well, the werewolves were gone.
07:04Retreated into the shadows.
07:06Leaving behind the carnage.
07:08And a silence that was deafening.
07:10Finding our horses, we rode out of the Badlands under a cloudless sky.
07:14Our faces etched with exhaustion.
07:17And something else.
07:19A newfound respect for the darkness that lurked beneath the surface of the Texas Badlands.
07:23Captain Walker knew that he had to New York and meet with Samuel Colt.
07:27And design a more powerful pistol.
07:29A pistol with six shots.
07:31Bigger bullets.
07:32And some maybe made of silver.
07:3720 years later, another Ranger would continue the fight with silver bullets.
07:41The Lone Ranger.
07:44On your feet, Black Hawk.
07:45Haunted by the echoes of howls in the night, and the chilling realization that in the vast wilderness of Texas, there were creatures far more terrifying than any outlaw.
