00:30THE END
01:00Good evening, I'm Michelle Lee.
01:15We're at the base of what is perhaps the most important symbol of freedom in the world today,
01:20the Statue of Liberty.
01:22Our reason for being here goes beyond illusion or entertainment.
01:25The United States government has granted permission for David Copperfield's attempt to vanish the Statue of Liberty.
01:32Why? David will explain later.
01:36Good evening, I'm William B. Williams.
01:38Last year, David performed the world's largest illusion when he vanished a seven-ton jet airplane.
01:45Now, to give you an idea of the magnitude of tonight's illusion,
01:48the statue's arm alone is longer than that airplane.
01:52The Statue of Liberty measures 305 feet in height and weighs an incredible 450,000 pounds.
02:04The statue was designed and constructed in France back in 1884 by a sculptor named Frederick Augusta Bachtoli
02:11and raised over New York Harbor in 1886 after being shipped here in separate pieces.
02:17There have been many theories on how David would accomplish this incredible illusion.
02:22For instance, it would take 26 helicopters to lift the separate pieces straight up
02:27if it were possible to detach the statue from the fort below.
02:31Another theory is to lower the statue into the ground,
02:35but because of its size and weight, it would take an elevator
02:38more than 15 minutes to get the statue below the fort level if such a device existed.
02:44Approval for this event came from our government.
02:48Their officials informed me of the Presidential Appointed Fundraising Commission
02:51for the statue's restoration, headed by Lee Iacocca.
02:54By 1986, she'll be as good as new.
02:57It was necessary to erect two scaffolding towers 200 feet in front of the statue.
03:04The towers are constructed to hold a curtain used in the illusion.
03:08Circling the statue will be a helicopter
03:10and will give an aerial view of the results of the illusion.
03:29This is where our audience will sit.
03:32The chairs are in a reclined position
03:34so that our audience can have a good view of the statue.
03:36David is in radio communication with our helicopter
03:39and three other strategic points around the statue.
03:46Surrounding the statue, we place three Codomatic instant cameras.
03:50They're being loaded with film now.
03:58These cameras will eject their instant photographs into these locked boxes.
04:02They'll be set off before the illusion begins
04:09and take continuous photographs in sequence
04:12to provide photographic proof of the statue's disappearance
04:16from three different angles around the statue.
04:20These young ladies will stand in front of the units
04:22and will remain with the cameras until we're finished.
04:25The members of our audience here are from all walks of life.
04:32They will be the jury for those back in our studio
04:34and all of you throughout the world watching this on TV.
04:43We've anchored the towers down in front of the fort
04:46to prevent them from blowing over
04:48while the curtain is raised between them.
04:50The green display on this radar screen
04:58shows the statue's existence.
05:01This radar screen will be your way and my way
05:03of keeping track of the statue when the curtain is raised.
05:06Stand by, Don.
05:07Our time is running short,
05:08but I think it's important for me to recap
05:09using this model of Liberty Island.
05:11The audience on Liberty Island and myself
05:13are seated here in front of the towers.
05:17200 feet in front of us is the Statue of Liberty.
05:19It's surrounded by a circle of lights that shine upon it.
05:22The curtain will be raised between the statue and the audience.
05:25Here, this is to protect the secret of the statue's disappearance.
05:29When the curtain is lowered,
05:30if we have successfully vanished the statue,
05:33we will go to our helicopter camera,
05:35which will give us an aerial view.
05:36To prove the statue has vanished,
05:38searchlights from the audience area
05:39will pass through the empty space
05:41the statue occupied moments before.
05:44Now, there's two things you must remember.
05:46First, this is the real Statue of Liberty,
05:48not a model.
05:50And second, when the curtain is raised,
05:53we will not cut away from our camera shot.
05:55It will remain on until after the statue has vanished.
05:59David's magic is performed with absolutely no camera tricks.
06:03The illusion you are watching at home
06:05is exactly the way he is doing it now.
06:08Ladies and gentlemen,
06:12Mr. David Copperfield.
06:13The illusion you are watching at home
06:18is exactly the same for the statue.
06:19That is the real Statue of Liberty!
06:21The寺麗
06:26was the most memorable
06:27to theцеast of stoner console.
06:27Theandidat
06:29was the first to add

06:31to belong to the statue.
06:33He is just the statue

06:42Ground control, pad at one. We're switching to your camera now. Give us a steady picture.
06:48Roger, ground control. We've got a big shot at the back of the statue.
06:51We're switching back to our ground camera. Remain strictly in front of us.
07:12I can't believe this.
07:42We're switching to your camera. This is the first license.
07:46Roger, ground control. It's just incredible. We're heading right to the circle of license. There's no statue there.
08:12You watched it. What was your reaction?
08:25I was just enchanted with the entire thing. I just disappeared. What happened? I had gone to it. I have no idea.
08:32No idea where it went.
08:32It was fascinating to watch it. Describe what you saw.
08:35I tell you, if I was home watching it on TV, I would be a little, you know, skeptical.
08:40But I was here and it was there and now it's not there. I don't know what happened to it. Fantastic.
08:44You look like a skeptic.
08:46All I know is that when the curtain dropped, the statue was not there and I didn't see it.
08:51And how about you?
08:52When that curtain went down and it was nothing there, I just couldn't believe it.
08:56Your reaction?
08:57I was amazed. I don't see it. It was there and it's not there anymore.
09:01Do you have any ideas where it went?
09:03I have no ideas.
09:04No idea where it went.
09:05No idea.
09:06Our Codomatic cameras with their boxes are being brought to our audience area.
09:10Now let's take a look at the instant photographs from the three surrounding views.
09:16These are the photos from the right side of the statue.
09:26And finally, from the left side.
09:52I have never seen a statue of liberty disappear the way this one did.
10:05Can David make the statue reappear?
10:08You'll find out.
10:22I want to tell you why I did this.
10:28My mother was the first one to tell me about the statue of liberty.
10:32She saw it first from the deck of a ship that brought her to America.
10:36She was an immigrant.
10:37She impressed upon me how precious our liberty is and how easily it can be lost.
10:43And then one day, it occurred to me that I could show with magic how we take our freedom for granted.
10:50But sometimes we don't realize how important something is until it's gone.
10:55So I asked our government for permission to let me make the statue of liberty disappear.
11:01Just for a few minutes.
11:03I thought if we faced emptiness, where for as long as we can remember that great lady has lifted up her lamp,
11:11why then, we might imagine what the world would be like without liberty.
11:15And we'd realize how precious our freedom really is.
11:18And then I would make the statue of liberty reappear by remembering the word that made it appear in the first place.
