00:00It's been a problem in this stadium in the past, gusting and swirling, and it's going to really affect the quarterbacks as well as the receivers' ability to adjust to the football.
00:08Kevin Falk from the goal line.
00:10Off the Ritchie kick, here's Falk, angle to the outside, Falk trying to cut it towards the sideline.
00:15And twirl down as he crosses the 30-yard line by Ronnie Jenkins on special teams.
00:2132-yard return.
00:23Major storyline here today, Tom Brady, the development, just his third NFL start.
00:28In for the injured, Drew Bledsoe, who is still at least a week away from light workouts.
00:34And one thing Bill Belichick told us in our meetings, Tom Brady is the most improved player that he has seen on this roster from last year's team.
00:41And one thing they're impressed with, the young quarterback, is he hasn't thrown any interceptions, done a good job of protecting the football, not turning it over.
00:49Terry Glenn has come onto the field in a three-wide receiver look to open up, and a first and ten from the 32.
00:55Shotgun, Brady underneath the coverage, able to find his receiver, David Patton, for a gain of two.
01:02He tried to turn it upfield, a modest gain on first down.
01:05Junior Seau with a stop, along with Molden.
01:08Patriots offense, what a recovery for Joe Andruzzi.
01:11Injured last week, Andruzzi in the lineup despite the injured knee.
01:16Backs and receivers, Antoine Smith, San Diego is familiar with him because of all of their Buffalo connections.
01:23We'll get into that momentarily.
01:25Terry Glenn will see action today, his first of the season after serving his suspension.
01:29On a handoff, Smith up the gut, and not much there.
01:33A two-yard gain up the middle, and Rodney Harrison, first man to greet him.
01:36San Diego defense, even amidst the 1-15 season, the defense, they were steady last year.
01:43Hard to believe with what they put up in the end.
01:46Wiley and Johnson, the bookend, pass rushers.
01:49The linebackers might as well get a timeshare for Junior Seau in Hawaii,
01:54the way that he's been to the Pro Bowl ten straight years.
01:56And the secondary, newcomers Molden and McNeil,
01:59the three agents that John Butler went out and got during the offseason.
02:02Out of the shotgun, a flag comes down, and it was Johnson on the rush who may have jumped.
02:10We will hear from Terry McCauley, our referee, for the first time today.
02:14Offside defense.
02:16Number 99, undebated to the quarterback.
02:19Five-yard penalty.
02:21Third down.
02:22That's Rayleigh Johnson.
02:23That's his game.
02:25He gets to the quarterback.
02:26He's got to jump early.
02:27You see him right there.
02:28Nothing to really draw him off.
02:30He just wants to get to the quarterback.
02:31Ten-and-a-half sacks in the 99 season,
02:33that's most of last year with an injured knee.
02:36So he's been having a pretty productive season so far here in the 2001 season.
02:41Inches to get to the quarterback.
02:42I just have to time it up a little bit.
02:43Changes a third and six to a third and one.
02:46And up the middle for Smith.
02:47First down on New England.
02:49Out near midfield, a seven-yard burst.
02:51And give some credit to Greg Robinson-Randle, making that space for Smith to work through.
02:59The Patriots have been trying to find someone to carry the load in the running game since
03:03the departure of Curtis Martin.
03:05And now, Antoine Smith is going to get that opportunity today and pretty much for the most
03:10of the season here.
03:11So they're going to ask him to do a lot in the running game.
03:13Out of the shotgun from the 49-yard line.
03:15Brady again.
03:16They set it up for Glenn.
03:17His first touch.
03:18And Glenn hurdling into San Diego territory and down at the 45-yard line.
03:24That's a seven-yard hookup.
03:25How much does this change the New England offense, Solomon, getting Terry Glenn back?
03:29I think just his presence on the football field, I think, affects their offense immensely.
03:34It takes the double coverage off of Troy Brown, a player who's been very productive as a wide
03:38receiver for the Patriots.
03:39So just the presence of Terry Glenn on the field, I think, helps to open up the passing
03:43game for the Patriots.
03:44What a soap opera it's been.
03:46Four-game suspension from violating the league's substance abuse policy.
03:49Belichick suspended him for the season when he failed to return to camp.
03:53And an arbitrator ruled that he is eligible to come back.
03:56Brady on the move.
03:57And Brown cannot bring it in.
03:59It would have been a first-down throw for New England.
04:04Instead, they'll face a third and short.
04:07And I talked to the Patriots' offensive coordinator, Charlie Weiss.
04:10He told me that we need Tom Brady to come out and be very accurate at the beginning of the game.
04:14He struggled with accuracy early in both of their last two ballgames.
04:18And he's come out.
04:19He's made a couple of completions.
04:20But that drop there by Troy Brown, it's what a young quarterback needs for his receivers
04:24to make the crucial catches, particularly when the ball hits them in the hand.
04:28Line of scrimmage is the 44.
04:29Kevin Falk has checked in the third down back on a third and three.
04:34David Patton, the motion man.
04:36Flags come down.
04:40Junior Seau coming over to make the stop.
04:42Look at his uniform.
04:43We haven't played five minutes of this game.
04:46Well, Junior's going to get dirty.
04:47He's a warrior.
04:48And that time, he came down in the A and B gap.
04:51And he likes the time of that blitz when he knows that they're running the football.
04:55Defense, number 55, five-yard penalty, first down.
05:00And I'll say, I will take chances.
05:02That's part of his game.
05:03And sometimes the chances don't work.
05:05And you'll see Junior coming up in the gap.
05:08Over the center, Damian Woody.
05:09And Bill Belichick says he likes to guess, but 90% of the time, he guesses right
05:14because he's so good in his film study and his preparation for football games.
05:18Gives him a first down, a first and 10 at the 39-yard line after the offside's call.
05:22Play fake.
05:23Well done.
05:24Brady's setting it up.
05:25And up to the sideline.
05:26And Glenn catches Cleveland.
05:28At the 19-yard line.
05:30A 20-yard pass and catch.
05:34And Terry Glenn getting involved early.
05:37And the play is effective because Tom Brady, as well as the running back, Antoine Smith,
05:41they do a good job with the play fake.
05:43He'll stick the ball right into his stomach and pull it right out.
05:47But this is very poised for a young quarterback.
05:49Tom Brady showing some poise on the play action.
05:52Excellent route by Terry Glenn.
05:54He breaks it off, and he's in position to make the catch.
05:57It's an excellent throw.
05:58A well-designed play, Terry Glenn coming out being very productive early here in the ballgame.
06:03We asked Brady about Glenn during the week of practice.
06:05He said, I've never seen a more natural athlete.
06:07He stepped right in and didn't miss a beat.
06:09On first down, Brady's strong throw to the perimeter.
06:12And David Patton catches.
06:15Alex Molden forced him out of bounds.
06:17A 9- or 10-yard game, depending upon where they spot the football.
06:21And the Patriots in business inside the 10.
06:24This is just a timing route to Patton as he breaks it off.
06:26Molden's just given way too much room here, playing too high and can't react to the pass.
06:31Nice pass by Tom Brady and excellent pass by Patton.
06:34Just a timing route from the receiver to the quarterback.
06:37How about the poise of Brady?
06:38We sat down with him.
06:39I know you were impressed.
06:40I was impressed with his confidence.
06:41Very young quarterback coming in to replace.
06:44A guy like Drew Bledsoe was thrown for over 3,000 yards in seven consecutive seasons.
06:48Big shoes to fill, but he comes out, and he's getting it done early in the ballgame.
06:52And they wanted to get him out to a good start, good rhythm, and he's doing it so far here today.
06:57Inches away from picking up that first down.
07:01Drew Bledsoe has been so durable for this New England team through the years.
07:06And Tom Brady was just hoping to carve out a niche this year as the backup quarterback.
07:10He was brought into camp to compete with Damon Hewitt, the former Miami Dolphin.
07:15Brady wins that backup job, and then poof.
07:18After the Jet game, he finds himself as the full-time starter.
07:22He's getting more snaps during the week in terms of preparation,
07:25so you're going to see him continue to get better each week
07:28as he's getting more snaps with practice and working with the first team.
07:31Second and inches for this New England offense.
07:36First possession of the game.
07:37Timing pattern.
07:39And incomplete.
07:40Terry Glenn in the vicinity in a matchup with Ryan McNeil.
07:44It'll be third and short.
07:45And that pass looked like it was overthrown,
07:47but really it was just an excellent job by the quarterback for the Chargers.
07:50Ryan McNeil did a good job of jamming Terry Glenn at the line of scrimmage
07:54and just really disrupted the timing of the route.
07:57So excellent defense.
07:58You'll see he'll give him a little room,
08:00but then go jamming just a little bit before the ball comes.
08:03And it was just really good.
08:04Good play by Ryan McNeil.
08:07Third and inches.
08:09Going to keep this drive going.
08:10Inside handoff.
08:11Edwards runs into a wall and then pushes himself forward.
08:15And it should be enough for a first out.
08:19We'll see where they spot it.
08:21Just needed a couple of inches after that pat and catch.
08:24And Gerald Jackson.
08:28The Patriots have come out and I think they've done a good job of mixing the run with the pass
08:32and trying to keep this Chargers defense off balance.
08:35But the Chargers have had two penalties on this drive.
08:38One against Ray Lee Johnson and Junior Seau.
08:40That tends to help the offense.
08:42And that's something I'm sure the defensive coaches for San Diego
08:45is really talking to their players.
08:46They have to calm down, settle down.
08:49This is their second road trip.
08:51It has many weeks.
08:52So they're going to have to settle down and play a little bit better
08:54and not hurt themselves.
08:57New England had just 69 yards passing in that loss to Miami last week.
09:02149 yards of total offense.
09:04And now they'll face a first and goal from the nine.
09:10Three receivers set.
09:11Long drive to open this thing up.
09:15Doug Flutie chomping at the beat just to get on this field
09:18and start making some magic happen.
09:21First and goal.
09:22Brady back.
09:23Brady avoids the run.
09:24Flutes it upstairs and out of the end zone.
09:27He's completely.
09:28Gerald Dixon was applying that pressure on young Tom Brady
09:32and he did get rid of it.
09:34And the reason why it worked, you see Junior Seau,
09:37he comes up into the line.
09:38And what that does, it forces the offensive lineman
09:41to have to jump to him and try to pass protect.
09:43But it frees up another player.
09:44In this case, Gerald Dixon.
09:45He comes right up the middle.
09:47And he's scot-free because so much attention
09:49is given to Junior Seau.
09:51And he knows how to free up other players
09:52in order to make plays.
09:54Constantly team player, but he can make big plays
09:56in his own right.
09:57Second and goal from the nine.
09:59First man through.
10:00It's Edwards.
10:00And San Diego sniffed it out.
10:02Rayleigh Johnson, first man to wrap him up.
10:04And then you saw all the white jerseys join in.
10:07That's a gain of one.
10:08Blake Johnson selection here.
10:10I think it's a tad bit conservative.
10:12You get inside the red zone and you run it
10:14with your fullback, Mark Edwards.
10:16You have no lead blocker against a defense
10:18that's one of the best in the league at stopping the run.
10:21I think you have to be a little bit more imaginative
10:23in terms of things you're going to do
10:24to try to get the ball into the end zone.
10:26Offense has been stagnant throughout the season.
10:28Patriot defensive backs have scored more touchdowns
10:31than New England wide receivers.
10:32Two to one this year.
10:34It's not a good sign with five.
10:35Not a good sign at all.
10:37Third and goal from the eight.
10:39Brady has the time.
10:40Puts it upstairs and two high once again for Glenn.
10:43It'll be fourth down.
10:46Double coverage.
10:47Glenn dealing with Molden and Jason Perry,
10:49and Brady could not find it.
10:51Yeah, Perry and Molden, they'll just double right outside,
10:54coming over the top there.
10:55And that's what Terry Glenn is going to bring.
10:57He's going to draw the double coverage.
10:59So now you have to find other guys to get open.
11:01You're going to have to get the ball to Patton and Troy Brown.
11:04And I'll tell you, the tight end has really been absent
11:06from the passing game of the New England Patriots,
11:08and that's where they really miss a player like Ben Tote.
11:11New England trying to get on the board first.
11:14Adam Vinatieri has been perfect this year.
11:16Six of six on field goal attempts.
11:18This is a 26-yarder.
11:19Vinatieri leans into it and bangs it through.
11:24So the Patriots with a long drive to open play today
11:27against the visiting Chargers.
11:30Three nothing, New England in front.
11:36PanθΆ³γγγ£γ±γγγγͺγͺγγγιγ«ε©γγ¦γγΎγγΎγγγγ.
11:40Soγ§γγγ.
11:41γ‘γγ£γ¨ε’γθΎΌγγ§ζ’γγ¦γγγγ¨γγζ°ζγ‘γεγ«εΊιγγζγ.
11:4813th place, 60-yard drive from New England took up just over 5 minutes of action.
11:53A 26-yard field goal from Vinatieri kicked it off.
11:56Ronny Jenkins on the return to the Chargers.
11:59Here's Jenkins, accelerating across the 30-yard line.
12:02And tackle down to the 32 by Patrick Patz.
12:05A 24-yard return.
12:07Doug Slutty will direct the Zednego offense.
12:09When do we return?
12:10The first time this season, San Diego has given up points in the first quarter of a game.
12:32They trail New England 3-0.
12:33And now Doug Flutty steps onto the field for the first time today to lead this Charger offense.
12:39A first and 10 from the 32.
12:41LaDainian Tomlinson, the dynamic rookie running back, gets the ball on the first play from scrimmage for San Diego.
12:47And a game three.
12:48Bobby Hamilton with the stop.
12:51Well, Flutty is from Nadek, Massachusetts.
12:52He's about 22 miles away from Foxborough, and he still keeps his residence here.
12:56But he did stay with the team in the team hotel the last two nights.
12:59You know, team curfew.
13:00He's got to deal with those kinds of issues.
13:02We'll focus and concentrate, huh?
13:06Flutty excited.
13:07He knows that a lot of fans were on his side in the pregame warm-ups.
13:10But he said once the game started, these are Patriot fans, not Flutty fans.
13:14Right.
13:15Second and seven from the 35.
13:17Flutty puts it in the air for the first time and zings it near his side.
13:20Nowhere near Jeff Graham.
13:24It'll be third and seven.
13:25Let's take a look at this San Diego offense.
13:27Much improved offense.
13:29Offensive line has been better than a year ago.
13:31Only five sacks allowed so far.
13:33They gave up 50 last year.
13:35McIntosh, Roundtree, Jaycox, Graham, and Vaughn Parker.
13:38Backs and receivers.
13:39Well, yes, Flutty has been a huge key.
13:41But without the man they're calling the offensive LT, LaDainian Tomlinson,
13:47I'm not sure this team would be 3-1 right now.
13:49Well, he's an all-purpose back, prides himself on doing everything well,
13:52not just running the ball, but pass catching and blocking as well.
13:55Crown getting into it early on a third and seven.
13:58Flutty way back in the pocket.
14:01Floats it out.
14:02Graham makes the catch and then hit quickly by Tabucky Jones.
14:06A gain of four.
14:07They needed seven.
14:08And San Diego is forced to punt.
14:10Bill Belichick came out and said,
14:11hey, we have to win on third down,
14:13something they didn't do a good job last week down in Miami.
14:16And already they come out and force the Chargers to have to put the ball in the air.
14:21They're facing the third medium.
14:23But they just come up, keep everything in front of them.
14:25Nice tackle, nice hit by Tabucky Jones on Jeff Graham.
14:28And we'll get into what Belichick has figured out over the years in dealing with Flutty.
14:33And the key is mixing it up and changing it up, showing him different looks.
14:37Darren Bennett, who's struggled the last two weeks for San Diego,
14:40gets a pretty good punt off.
