00:00Three weeks ago, Vinatieri gets it started.
00:04Morton comes up to the eighth.
00:09To the outside at the 30.
00:12Still on his feet to the 40-yard line.
00:15So the Jets start with good field position.
00:17Matt Stephens with the tackle and outcomes of Vinny Testaverde.
00:22Testaverde now in his 15th year in the NFL after his Heisman season at the University of Miami, Florida.
00:29Testaverde, a couple of touchdown passes in the opener against Indianapolis.
00:33Won by the Colts, 45-24.
00:36And he's moving up on the all-time NFL passing list.
00:41Curtis Martin, three years in New England.
00:441,000 yards each season.
00:46Three years now in New York.
00:481,000 yards each of those three.
00:50And he's the tailback.
00:52Testaverde.
00:54To Trevath and a first down at the 49 of New England.
00:57And let's take a look at the opening lineup for the New York Jets.
01:03Up front.
01:04And they've been together for three years.
01:06Fabini, Jenkins, Moai, Thomas, and Young.
01:11Curtis Martin and Anderson in the backfield.
01:13Coles and Crevet wide out.
01:15And Anthony Beck is the tight end.
01:19First down in Patriot territory.
01:21That's Anderson in motion.
01:25And the toss to Martin.
01:28He's got five.
01:30And close to six to the 43-yard line before Anthony Pleasant can make the tackle for the Patriots.
01:36And here they are defensively.
01:37The starters with Hamilton, Seymour, Pleasant, and Pfeiffer.
01:41And next jet up front.
01:43With Brable and Bruschi outside.
01:45And Brian Cox, the former jet, in the middle.
01:47Ty Law and Terrell Buckley at the corners.
01:50Stevens and Malloy.
01:51The safety.
01:53Bill Belichick in his second season here in New England.
01:57Defensive mastermind.
01:58And both with the Giants and Jets.
02:01Head coach at Cleveland five years.
02:03Pump fake by Testaverde.
02:05And he's going long.
02:06And Lavernius Coles can't get there.
02:11Terrell Buckley on the coverage for New England.
02:13Well, Dick, talking to both head coaches,
02:16one of the things that's a big concern is the buildup of the players during the week.
02:20Because you just don't flip a switch on Sunday afternoon.
02:24It is a week's preparation.
02:25It's like climbing a mountain.
02:26Both Herman Edwards and Bill Belichick were pleased with the progression of their teams
02:32as the week went along.
02:34Both set by Friday.
02:35We were flying around.
02:36Both expect their teams to play well.
02:39Third down and four.
02:43Testaverde hit.
02:45Is it rolled a fumble?
02:47No.
02:48Incomplete pass.
02:49His arm was going forward.
02:50Anthony Pleasant and Richard Seymour, the rookie from Georgia, in there quickly.
02:54And the call, by the way, made right on the spot by Larry Nemers, who is our referee today.
03:01And he is one of the originals as they are all back.
03:04And you can see Vinny Testaverde's arm moving forward.
03:07And there comes Nemers in right away to say incomplete pass.
03:12But the officials in the NFL have settled their contractual dispute.
03:16And we have the regular officials back working all the NFL games this weekend.
03:21Troy Brown, who came into the league the same year.
03:23Drew Bledsoe was the number one pick.
03:25He was picked in the last round.
03:27And has been very productive.
03:29He's going to let it go.
03:30And it'll bounce into the end zone.
03:32And so Tuka's kick will present a first and ten at the 20-yard line for New England.
03:3943 yards, 23 net.
03:41We'll return to Foxborough.
03:46And welcome back.
03:47Patriots had the ball for the first time.
03:49Drew Bledsoe now in his ninth year.
03:51Just 500 yards away from joining that 30,000-yard club out of Washington State.
03:57Never quite sure where the Palouse begins.
04:10I'll take it there sometime.
04:12Hand off to Antoine Smith.
04:14Out to the 25.
04:15A gain of five.
04:16Marvin Jones, the tackler.
04:18The Patriots line up this way with Light Compton, Woody, Andrewsie, and Robinson Randall.
04:24Antoine Smith, the former Buffalo Bill, Mark Edwards from Cleveland.
04:29Troy Brown and David Patton.
04:31He's an interesting story.
04:32We'll get to that.
04:32Rod Rutledge, the tight end.
04:35Patton brings a new speed.
04:37And he's a graduate of the Arena Football League.
04:43Second and five.
04:44And Smith can't get out of the backfield.
04:46Dropped for a loss of a yard as Mo Lewis is there for the stop.
04:51It's third and six.
04:52Here are the Jets defensively.
04:54Ellis, Barnes, Martin.
04:56Barton Martin picked up off the waiver wire.
04:58And John Abraham is a star to be.
05:01Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones, James Ferrier.
05:03Familiar names at linebacker for New York.
05:05Aaron Glenn and Marcus Coleman at the corners.
05:07Damian Robinson acquired from Tennessee.
05:10And Victor Green, the safeties.
05:12And the matchup to watch is that guy right there, John Abraham,
05:15going against a rookie at left tackle in Matt Light.
05:18Their second-round draft choice from Purdue.
05:20Third and six.
05:21A little shovel pass to Edwards, but doesn't fool the Jets.
05:24James Ferrier.
05:25And he stopped short of the first down.
05:2858, James Ferrier.
05:30So the Jets bring on their punt return team with Chad Morton drifting back.
05:39And Lee Johnson, who now owns the punting yardage record in the National Football League,
05:45approaching 50,000 yards, somewhere around 28 miles.
05:50He could start kicking here and get all the way to Boston.
05:53And all of that amassed over 17 years.
05:55That's a good life, 17 years as a punter.
05:58Out of BYU.
05:59And he lost a spiral to the 20-yard line.
06:03And a fair catch.
06:04And just missing at the last minute, diving by was Gerard Cherry eluding the penalty.
06:15The NFL on CBS.
06:18He's sponsored by the HP Photosmart digital camera.
06:22How will you use it?
06:24Budweiser.
06:25With a crisp, clean, refreshing taste you'll find in no other beer.
06:29And by Chrysler.
06:31Drive equals love.
06:39Lee Johnson's 51-yard punt.
06:42Yet as with all those years, 17 years, his longest ever was in the opener against Cincinnati.
06:47A 76-yard punt.
06:49And at the 21, the Jets put it in play.
06:54That's the birdie off play action.
06:56That was underneath.
06:59And a short game for Curtis Martin before Mike Vrabel can trip him up.
07:05Well, one of the strange things happening on the field today.
07:09Kildarek is going to involve Vinny Testaverde under center, looking across the line of scrimmage.
07:14And looking right at Brian Cox, his teammate, for the last three years.
07:18They know each other so well.
07:19They're friends.
07:20And Vinny said, I know what's going to happen right off the bat.
07:23He's going to be yelling, Vinny T.
07:25Vinny T.
07:26That's what he always called Vinny.
07:28And good friends, but today competitive.
07:30Of course, Knowsley's scheme for the Jets.
07:32And will be thrown out by his new teammates.
07:35Martin, a former Patriot.
07:37A yard shy of the first down.
07:38Ty Law from the corner to make the stop.
07:40It'll be third and one.
07:43Yeah, he said, Cox, he'll try to make me smile and laugh.
07:47He said, but I know he's going to hit me.
07:48And I'm not going to be smiling much during this game.
07:51And you notice that neck brace that Brian Cox wears.
07:53Well, when he played for the Jets, it was green.
07:55And when he came to New England, he still, he brought his green shoulder pads and neck
07:59brace with him.
08:00And the guys in the locker room said, Brian, you're in New England now.
08:03The green pads have got to go.
08:05We do not wear green here in New England.
08:08Ty Law in making that tackle, Dan injured and jogs off under his own power.
08:13You see Cox's record with the New York Jets.
08:17And over his career with four interceptions and 21 forced fumbles and 52 sacks.
08:24You see them washing out the left eye of Ty Law.
08:27Hopefully nothing too serious.
08:29Leonard Myers, a rookie, replaces him.
08:31Number 25, third and one.
08:33Right into the teeth of that Patriot defense.
08:36And pretty solid as Anderson met by Brian Cox.
08:41It'll be close for the first down.
08:42Well, we mentioned the Patriots' number two draft choice starting at offensive tackle.
08:51Their number one draft choice, Richard Seymour.
08:53He's number 93 right at the bottom of there.
08:55You saw Brian Cox come flying in.
08:58So the Patriots getting playing time early from both of their top draft choices.
09:04Richard Seymour out of Georgia.
09:06Boy, he's going to be a good player in this league for a long time.
09:096'6", a little over 300 pounds.
09:11Still got room to grow, if you can imagine that.
09:14Only 21 years of age.
09:16Those two times all SEC at Georgia.
09:18And his help on that stop will send the Jets' punting team on the field.
09:24The other point, Dan, yesterday in talking with both Bill Belichick and Herman Edwards,
09:31you asked the question, coaching this week,
09:34were you a little easier on them because of the circumstances,
09:37or were you tougher than normal?
09:38Interesting answer, and it was the same from both.
09:40The same from both.
09:41They said, if anything, I was tougher on the guys.
09:44Football players can't be given an excuse for failure.
09:49And both of them said, if anything, I was harder on the guys this week
09:52than I was the week before the opener.
09:54And it's just a little insight as to what's involved in coaching in this business.
09:58There's no manual to tell these guys how to handle something
10:01like we've all been through as a nation.
10:03And it's, you have to go on your own and hope you figure it out.
10:07Tuka's punt to Troy Brown.
10:10Brown at the 24.
10:12Gets a good block and then bumped out of bounds at the 30-yard line.
10:1646-yard punt, six on the return.
10:19Nine and a half minutes left in the opening quarter.
10:21New England and the Jets, no score.
10:23Sellout of 62,000 at Foxborough.
10:31Each fan is presented with an American flag
10:34and unanimous in our standing salute
10:37to the bravery of our firefighters and policemen.
10:44Kevin Falk, the new tailback in this sequence,
10:47and he able to struggle barely back to the line of scrimmage.
10:50John Abrahams, running in from that defensive end position.
10:55Log on to NFL.com for real-time scoring,
10:57up-to-the-minute stats, live play-by-play,
11:00only at NFL.com or AOL keyword, NFL.com.
11:04Word comes along that Patriot cornerback Ty Law
11:07just had some debris in his eye.
11:09They've gotten it out, and he'll be back out
11:11the next time the Patriots are on defense.
11:13Second, and a long 10 for Bledsoe.
11:23And it's J.R. Redmond from Wisconsin-Arizona State.
11:27Flag goes down as Redmond picks up five to the 35.
11:31Abraham and Therrier collaborate on the tackle.
11:34Not being able to predict the future with any regularity,
11:41I think, I feel strongly, though, Dick,
11:43there will be more flags thrown this weekend
11:45than we have seen thus far.
11:47Way to go out on a limb.
11:48Yeah, the replacement officials were very sparing
11:51in their throwing of the flag.
11:52Holding offense, number 86, 10-yard penalty.
11:56Repeat second down.
11:57David Patton, the wide receiver from West Carolina,
12:03he was kind of bounced around for a while,
12:06was out of football working an $8 an hour job
12:09and just wouldn't give up.
12:11He played to the Albany Fireballs in the Arena League.
12:16Coaches realize that holding is going to happen
12:20with your tight end and your offensive linemen.
12:23They really become ill-tempered
12:25when it's a wide receiver who gets caught for holding.
12:28They realize how much they are out in the open
12:32and they really work so hard
12:33at keeping their arms to the inside.
12:35It's just you cannot get away with anything
12:37when you're as exposed as a wide receiver.
12:40Second down and 14.
12:42That's Troy Brown in motion
12:43and Bledsoe to throw.
12:47Back underneath.
12:48Complete to Redmond to the 35.
12:49So they picked up the 10
12:51from the previous penalty.
12:53And it'll be third down and five.
12:56Barrier and Coleman made the tackle.
12:59J.R. Redmond.
13:02Joseph Robert.
13:04He was their third round draft choice last year.
13:07And again, Robert Edwards,
13:09who was hurt several years ago,
13:11the Patriots' number one draft choice,
13:13not the answer this year.
13:15Desperately, this franchise seeks to find a running back
13:18and a running game to go with it.
13:20It's all Drew Bledsoe offensively, unfortunately.
13:23Direct snap this time.
13:25Number 33.
13:27And that's Kevin Falk
13:28who kicks his way out to the 48-yard line.
13:31Well, there's a little razzle-dazzle.
13:37Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator,
13:39goes into the bag of tricks early.
13:42Boy, look at that snap.
13:43Right to him.
13:44What a great job.
13:47Boy, that's a play
13:49that so easily can just fall apart.
13:52The snap's a little bit off.
13:54Boy, really well done.
13:56Mike Compton out in front with blocking.
13:58Robinson Randall out front.
14:00Good-looking play.
14:01Good picker.
14:0113 yards for Falk.
14:03That was his first carry of the season.
14:04This is Mark Edwards
14:05powering through.
14:07Tacklers to the 37.
14:11Victor Green finally gets him to the green.
14:14And what a nice addition for the Patriots
14:16is Mark Edwards.
14:17With the Cleveland Browns last year,
14:19Butch Davis with the new system in Cleveland
14:21really doesn't have need for a true fullback.
14:24And that's what Edwards is.
14:25And, you know, Dick, it surprised us yesterday
14:28when we were talking to Bill Belichick
14:30about his running ability.
14:32He called him his best runner
14:34and maybe one of his best out-of-round players.
14:36But it was kind of shock-pulled.
14:39San Francisco and Cleveland,
14:41no one noted that.
14:43Total talent.
14:46Let's up.
14:47With protection.
14:50Overthrown.
14:50And Victor Green was closer than David Patton.
14:53That's not good.
15:00Victor Green, the Jets' strong safety,
15:02also has the reputation
15:04of one of the hardest-hitting safeties in football.
15:07He led the team last year with...
15:09...
15:22...
15:24...
