Viola Davis celebrates visibility, voices and female filmmakers at Cannes

Actress and activist Viola Davis brings her voice -- and vision -- to the forefront of Cannes as L'Oreal Paris celebrates five years of the Lights On Women's Worth Award. The Academy Award winner joins this year's festival as juror for the award, which spotlights a standout female filmmaker. 'I'm not worried about women in the film industry,' Davis tells AFP, adding, 'we're used to adversity... and now we're becoming the change we want to see.'

00:00I'm not worried about women in the film industry because I think that we're used to adversity.
00:08I think that we're used to creating in time periods where we're not seen, where we're
00:15not heard, where every obstacle has been put in our path.
00:19And I think that women now are becoming the change that they want to see.
00:26But here's the thing, everything in this business and this world is about visibility.
00:34There is not one person who doesn't want to be seen because the opposite of visibility
00:40is invisibility.
00:42And the opposite of light is dark.
00:46And everybody wants to feel worthy.
00:49And everybody wants to see their story on screen.
00:53And so, therefore, when you open the door to artists, you have to open the door to all
00:59of us.
01:02Every last one of us.
01:04It's only going to make our lives richer.
01:06Think about what life would be without art.
01:09And think about what life would be if you only allowed some voices in and others out.
01:17It's the way it should be.
01:18There should not even be a name for it.
01:23Art is for everyone.
01:26Art is not something that is inclusive, not inclusive.
01:32If you have a voice, if you have a story, if you have a talent, then you should be a part
01:39of this business.
01:40Well, first of all, how I feel is I have a front row seat to their story.
01:46I remember my story so clearly.
01:48The first people who encouraged me to be an actor, who felt like I was capable, felt like
01:54I was worthy, who saw me.
01:57And whenever I tell my story, they're now a part of it.
02:01They're a part of my journey.
02:04And now I feel like I'm going to be a part of these women's stories.
02:34We shall be a part of these women's stories.
02:42Oh my god.
02:44And now we have to bring the verb다 back to your story.
02:50So let's cut a couple why.
