00:00and now uh we are joined on the river islands guest line by none other than steve kerr head
00:06coach of the dubs hey coach how are you i'm doing well how are you guys we are uh we're doing
00:12fantastic and uh by the way before we get into uh to chatting with you um want to remind everybody
00:18that this is all presented by great clips and sports success is about team effort same is true
00:22for your hair great clips it's going to be great also brought to you by rafell lumber and building
00:27supply serving contractors homeowners and the community in marin for over 50 years visit
00:32their showroom today all right coach i i wonder with a little bit of space from the elimination
00:39and then the exit interviews and and you get to now kind of kind of what's what's your view on on on
00:47the way this all kind of played out and and why in the absence of steve curry uh you guys just you
00:54you weren't able to to kind of grasp at least one game
00:58well i don't think my feelings have changed that much frankly even even with um you know having a
01:05week to to think about it um there's a reason uh steve curry is steve curry and um you know he's one of
01:13the greatest players of all time and um you know when when we lost him um that was uh pretty tough
01:22blow and and uh i i think game three was the key you know we we um we had our shot up six mid fourth
01:30that's the game that we really needed to get uh because if we get that that the tone of the series
01:38changes and you know steve was scheduled to come back for game six and we just had to find a way
01:45uh to get to game six but um couldn't do it again minnesota played really well for us honestly the
01:54the um just the lack of perimeter shooting um was the the toughest thing uh for us to to try to solve
02:02and we just uh you know we're obviously we've obviously always been a great shooting team but
02:07you know we've been pretty top heavy with our shooting overall with with you know some of the
02:13greatest shooters of all time with steve clay kevin durant uh but we haven't been a team that's
02:19you know sort of built with you know seven or eight different perimeter shooters so when steve goes out
02:25um it's just a lot tougher to to uh to get the spacing you need in the in the modern game you
02:30mentioned game three and that's where jimmy butler was terrific shooting it he had 26 attempts and
02:35then just 20 attempts combined in games four and five is it fair to say he took a back seat or did
02:41minnesota just focus more on him defensively which made it so he couldn't try to be batman to uh with
02:48step out of the game well if you think about jimmy's game you know the way he likes to play i mean he's
02:53he's the best iso player in the league but he does it in a very unique way and i'm i'm talking analytically
03:01like you're fun on you know iso plays across the league jimmy i don't know if he finished number one
03:10but basically he's he's you know number one points per possession if not number one then you know top
03:16few but it's different it's not you know it's not like an iso into a jump shot it's a it's an iso
03:23into survey and find an open guy on the perimeter or get fouled or get to the rim
03:30and so those last uh three games of the series last four games uh he just didn't have much
03:37spacing part of that was you know we went away from moses moody and quentin post um just for you
03:43know the way the series was going and so he didn't have as much shooting around him as he normally does
03:50and uh and so all of a sudden the pictures were much different and um jimmy was basically going
03:57against mcdaniels with gobert at the rim and and um you know not much shooting around him so the game
04:04got way tougher um you know for jimmy in those last few and that was just kind of the way it shook out
04:10steve just because you mentioned his name um i we're very curious about moses moody the struggles
04:16he had down the stretch and then the news today that there's a thumb injury and that he needed surgery
04:22do you equate those two things is that what was going on for him down the stretch
04:26well i don't know i mean you never really know um you know how much stuff like that factors in you
04:33never want to make an excuse um for it and and uh moses definitely didn't make any excuses for it
04:40uh i just think that you know this the way the houston series shook out um you know they put shangun
04:48on him it kind of changed all the matchups it changed the rhythm of the game we turned to buddy
04:53you know buddy gets going and and uh has 33 in game seven and you know 24 in game one of the minnesota
05:01series so the things really shifted towards towards buddy and away from moses so um sometimes that's
05:08the way it works in the playoffs um that's how it worked out this time i was really happy for moses
05:14the way he came back and then played so well and you know in game five in the fourth quarter when
05:19we we got him back out there but uh you know it just didn't didn't work out for him that well or
05:25or quentin um you know in the series based on the matchups and um like i said sometimes it just it
05:32just plays out that way and it kind of played out in reverse for jonathan comingo where he kind of fell
05:37out of the rotation against houston and then steph gets hurt and suddenly you need some scoring and so
05:42he comes in and takes on a much bigger share would jonathan comingo have been a part of that series
05:47had steph not gotten hurt well you don't know i mean i mean there's a reason that we were playing
05:57the guys we were you know in the houston series and down the stretch of the season because we've we've
06:03found a formula that worked and we found lineup combinations that worked and and when you find
06:09something like that in the nba you stick with it because winning is really hard so you know yeah
06:15this is uh these are always questions that are tough to to answer hypothetically um but i know that
06:22we had uh we had found a groove and we were winning and we advanced in the playoffs and uh so we were
06:29going to keep doing you know what we were doing but as soon as you go down in a series um you have to
06:36rethink everything and so we we you know we may have rethought it and gotten him out there but
06:40who knows steve kerr with us here withered and dibs 95 7 the game coach this may uh may not surprise
06:48you you know you were on the tk show with tim kawakami recently and thought what you were saying
06:54in that conversation about the jonathan comingo like umbrella overall topic was really really interesting
07:02and we've gotten a lot of conversation out of it today and so i i wanted to ask you this because
07:08when you said um that that you know you guys have been trying to kind of hammer home the way that you
07:15want him to play it it felt to me like you were at least insinuating that that you know you guys want
07:22him to play one way and maybe he doesn't and and and but i don't want to put words in the mouth you you
07:29tell me is there is there a bit of a disagreement between the staff and jonathan in terms of how
07:35he should be playing i don't think there's a disagreement um i think that there is a uh maybe a
07:45different view um you know from his perspective and and what he's comfortable doing he's obviously a
07:53natural scorer you saw that in the minnesota series when he got his opportunity he scored really well
07:59and that's what he's most comfortable doing um but with our team and the way we're built and with
08:05steph and jimmy you know they're going to dominate the ball what we need from that spot uh is rebounding
08:13and uh you know we need we need the the passing the connection and yes we need the scoring but it has
08:21to uh it has to come within the context of you know what we're what we're really good at and what
08:28we you know we're really great at for the last two months um you know with jimmy and steph so
08:33i think you know i said it to tim yesterday i mean young players take uh some time to sometimes to
08:41figure out you know who they are and what what kind of player they are and what their role is and it's
08:47it's not always easy and and he as i said jk's 22 and um i think there's there's plenty of growth
08:54ahead but it's it's never it's never an easy road when you're um when you're sort of going down a path
09:00like this yeah i think it's a fair question to come out of that conversation for a lot of people and
09:05and wonder if this is a a can't do it or a won't do it kind of a conversation in other words these
09:13things you're asking him to do you believe he's capable of doing them right i do i do but it's
09:21again it's you know we're you go down the path and you you know you you try to uh to get you know
09:29kind of habits that are built and you know you want them to be consistent and so you you know in
09:37year four you you would hope that those things are coming and i i i would say they have been
09:43inconsistent i'm talking about the rebounding front and taking care of the ball and so look i mean i i've
09:49i've tried to explain this you know to our fans and to you guys um over the course of the year but
09:55the way the team is built you know we've got we've got two guys in jimmy and steph who are two of the
10:01very best in the in the league and they're going to have the ball in their hands we have two guys
10:06in steph and draymond who are going to turn the ball over quite a bit um it's just kind of the
10:11nature of their games and so you know the fit with jonathan um and and i've been very open with him
10:18about this as well the fit is a little tricky when he's a guy who needs the ball and he's a guy who
10:25turns the ball over a lot you know so it's uh you you throw all that stuff together and as a coach
10:32you just say all right what's the best way for us to win how does the puzzle fit together and uh that's
10:39why we ended up kind of in the situation we did where he he fell out of the the loop a little bit
10:45and um you know not his fault um but uh you know again young player we're trying to win um and uh we
10:54we we went down the path we felt gave us the best chance to do that you made a great comp to
10:59aaron gordon on the tk pod and we were playing that sound before and you even mentioned that
11:04aaron gordon had to go elsewhere to kind of start to figure it out do you think that jonathan kaminga
11:09could develop into doing the things that you need him to do here in golden state over the course of
11:15the offseason and you know coming back with the veteran core or will he have to try and find this
11:20sort of role elsewhere well i mean he's definitely capable of doing that here and that's uh obviously
11:28what uh we're going to be focused on um you know as a coaching staff jk uh told me he's going to be
11:35around uh here a lot more this summer he hasn't been around our facility much the last couple summers
11:41but he's uh he's got a couple young girls uh he's he's much more settled down now wants to be in
11:47one place and so he's going to be in our gym and we're going to hammer home those those points
11:52with him and and uh try to you know try to get him to understand all those loose balls all those
11:58long rebounds like you know with his athleticism uh those are plays if you know for for him to help
12:05us win you know he's got to get those rebounds he's got to chase down those loose balls he's got
12:10to run the floor sprint the floor and if he does all these things and then there's no question
12:15he can find a better role and find a better fit you know next to jimmy and steph and and dream on
12:22um so that's the that's the goal as a coaching staff to to you know to try to help him achieve
12:29that and and add those things to his game to to to give himself more of a chance to play that's an
12:35interesting conversation it sounds like you guys have because steve if we had a nickel for every time
12:40a listener called us and said boy jk must want out of here like did did you take for this jk you
12:46think does he want to stay a warrior uh i think the number one thing is that jk and i have a very
12:55good relationship um we we talk all the time uh we like each other it's it's uh you know it's it's
13:04this is all just basketball this is not a case of jk coming in saying hey i gotta get out of here i
13:10want to you know i want this i want that this is this is just trying to make this fit and trying to
13:17make this work uh but every every player um you know every young player even the older guys like
13:25they know they want to they want to fit in well with what's happening and uh so i i think there's a
13:31you know there's got to be part of jk that um thinks about going elsewhere and you know would
13:37he get more of an opportunity and those are all very normal human emotions to to to think about
13:43you've talked a lot about you know jk not necessarily fitting with jimmy butler and stef
13:48and draymond all in the court at the same time is that fit something that can be developed and
13:54nurtured now that you're going to have theoretically all four guys in a training camp and leading into a
13:59season 100 i'm i'm going to uh give that time next year you know assuming jk comes back i will
14:09explore that right from the beginning we didn't have that luxury this year you know jimmy arrived
14:14and jk got hurt almost at the exact same time and um and from the time jimmy arrived we were basically
14:21in the playoffs every game was was huge for us and so um while jk was out you know as i've explained
14:30many times uh we got really good we got really good with jimmy on the floor and jk injured um and we
14:38had to continue down that path and keep keep trying to win every game just to make the playoffs so uh
14:44next year with a training camp uh and and an 82 game season absolutely i will give that lots of time
14:52and try to make that uh fit as best as possible steve kerr with us uh on willard and dibs 95 7 the game
14:59i'd really love to explore uh the emotional side of of like steph curry's kind of helpless frustrations
15:08as this this thing ended up kind of slipping away for you guys for us fans it was hard to watch those
15:14facial expressions for him over there on the bench so i'd love to hear from from your perspective
15:21the emotions you felt for for steph in not being able to be there as the season ended
15:28yeah i mean you feel terrible for the guy i mean he's uh nobody cares more than steph nobody puts more
15:36effort more thought more work into being great and there's a reason he does it he loves the process
15:44he loves to win he hates to lose uh he's the ultimate competitor and so you go through an eight
15:51month season um you get to that point and the team's in a great place he's in a great place
15:58up 1-0 in a series uh man it's just excruciating uh for the team and but especially for steph
16:06to just not not have him out there and not not be able to to get out on the floor uh for steph it
16:13was uh it was brutal but oh as always steph has amazing perspective he knows how lucky he is he knows
16:21how great his life is and uh he's uh he's not going to get too down because he's uh he's steph curry
16:28he's got it he's got an incredible perspective on things bittersweet uh and tantalizing were the
16:33words i used because you go up 1-0 and it felt like maybe there was something special happening
16:39and of course steph gets hurt do you get heartened by the fact that you won game one and you started
16:45to really see what you know steph and jimmy and draymond could do toward the tail end of the year
16:49and does that give you extra hope going into next year that you guys can really take another legitimate
16:55swing at it oh yeah i mean you after jimmy arrived you know we were top five in both offense
17:03and defense um in terms of ratings you know net ratings and and that's those are the hallmarks of
17:11a championship team and and uh all three guys are just incredible competitors and playoff performers
17:17and uh so the fact that we were right there we win you know the first round we're up 1-0 in the
17:23second round like you know when there's only eight teams left um all of that everything we saw all the
17:30data um the chemistry in the locker room it was all you know very very promising so uh you run it
17:38back again next year for sure and you see what you can do you know around those guys and try to improve
17:44a little bit um you know both terms of the roster but also the you know what we can do as coaches you
17:51know scheme wise and lineup combinations all that stuff and i think we go into next season with uh
17:58with a lot of energy and a lot of uh a lot of expectations yeah like without using names that
18:03are either on your team or not on your team like does that go through your mind if you could go to
18:08a computer and build the kind of players that you want to add to this team for next year what would
18:14you do well i i always love passing i you know my my 11 years here we've always had uh guys who can
18:23can move the ball the game just connects when you can pass you look at the pacers um you know the way
18:30they're playing and so much of their offense comes from the passing you know the pacers and us were the
18:36were the number one and number two passing teams in terms of passes per game uh this year in the nba
18:44both in the regular season and the playoffs uh it's always been our style it's always been the thing that
18:49unlocks steph the best so anybody who can pass the ball can play for me and then i think in the
18:56shooting i mentioned you know just because we've been a little top heavy on the on the shooting side
19:01um if we get out a little more spacing i think that would be really helpful as well but of course
19:07you know those are qualities that are tough to come by and uh you go through the free agent list you go
19:12through potential trades uh there's never anybody that's easily accessible because uh if we think
19:20they're good other teams think they're good too so uh i have great faith in mike and joe and kirk and
19:26the front office and uh i know that joe always does everything possible to to to you know put the best
19:34team on the floor and uh so i have a lot of faith in what our front office can do and how we're gonna
19:40we're gonna do everything we can to put the best team out there possible you mentioned the pacers uh
19:45are you watching these playoffs or is it too painful for you steve i'm watching them but i'm also not
19:51you know planning my day around them i i actually went and saw mission impossible last night so i uh
19:57i missed it but i watched it this morning because i had it recorded turned out to be a pretty good game
20:02good little game last night insane i i mean i knew what happened but well i just watched the fourth
20:09corner this morning and and even though i knew what was gonna happen i still didn't believe it
20:15five different times it's it's stunning stunning what happened in that game well and is it true
20:21that because i haven't seen mission impossible is it true that tom cruise in that movie is down 14
20:26with 245 to go i would say that what the pacers pulled off was even more difficult than what ethan hunt
20:37was able to pull off mission impossible yeah even more difficult that's uh that is that's insanity
20:44um hey real quick coach a comment on uh draymond green first team all defense but but but also would
20:52love to know do you think he should have won dpoi well uh i believe this is his ninth time on the
21:00all defense team um that's insane i mean obviously draymond's heading for the hall of fame you know
21:07first ballot um but um yeah the just uh the longevity um the impact of his his game defensively i think
21:18it's honestly it has uh resonated around the league everybody over you know the last seven eight years
21:24says the same thing we got to get our dream on you know we got our we got to get our dream our version
21:29of draymond the problem is there's only one you know and there's just nobody out there who can
21:35do everything that draymond does defensively and uh that's why he's so unique that's why he's so
21:42decorated as a defensive player and uh as for the you know defensive player of the year yeah i think he
21:50should have won more than one but uh he's uh he's recognized around the league the coaches uh people
21:56know how good he is uh coach also real quick would love to get a comment on on the final performance
22:02from brandon podjemski which looked like it ran the full gamut like a bunch of points and a bunch of
22:08shots uh you you barking on him on the sidelines uh you know you mentioned afterwards some things
22:14you'd like him to do differently coming up next year what what did you take from that final performance
22:19from him well i was thrilled that uh he had that breakout game in game five uh it was important
22:26for him i think for his confidence i think it was important for him to feel the difference um you
22:33know between that game and and others um i think there's uh there's a lot to learn as a young player
22:39in the playoffs the playoffs kind of expose everything about a team and an individual and and it teaches
22:46you what you need to work on and uh so it was a great experience for brandon i'm a huge fan of
22:53his a believer of his game and uh i just think uh he's he's going to come back even better next year
23:00as a result all right coach thank you for the entire year no no one is classier than you and it means the
23:07world to us and we really appreciate the extended time that you spend with us every single week
23:13including this week and uh we're already uh we're already looking forward to next year but but above
23:18all just thank you so much for for your generosity thank you guys i really enjoyed it uh look forward
