00:00now here this morning kicking off memorial day weekend the great rob nicka former new england
00:06patriot rob nickovich thank you thank you thank you very much good job beautiful weather weekend
00:12we have here yeah hopefully the rain goes away are you were you planning to do anything are you
00:16doing anything with the family or i was planning to go to nantucket but the boat will not make it
00:21over there right well i'm yeah were you going you weren't going ferry you were going no private
00:25private watercraft yes friend were you going in boat you always have friends with boats were you
00:30going on bill's new boat uh oh were you the plus one plus one ring that's that's ai generated we know
00:37that no come on there's no way you're putting that on there when has tmc been wrong greg's inside scoop
00:43said that it's real that's no i don't i can't believe it until i see you don't believe it i
00:48don't believe it a picture especially on the internet you can't believe but doesn't this
00:52change your whole foundational understanding of this guy that helped you win superbowls
00:56isn't this like so crazy you better than it you know better than anybody yes how he was all about
01:01distractions all that stuff since we're talking about bill crazy i don't know but hey guess what
01:06when you're i guess later in life yeah right you're trying to just have fun i guess you're not you're
01:12not answering just answer hey if i was 70 something i don't know how many more years i got i don't know
01:20i'm trying to have fun he's living his best life hey i'm making multiple millions like yes all
01:24right let's go hey i know a few people that date younger guys or girls i'm sorry or guys right
01:29i'm right here yeah i know sorry i said guy i mean yeah um but answer curtis's question he was big on
01:36the no distractions yeah did it surprise you to learn uh that the new york times reported that while you
01:44guys were uh holed up in the end zone motel uh before a game that bill would perhaps have jordan
01:52visit him there did we say new york times yes have we fact checked the new york times all right they
01:57never do like is that we've gone through a whole election where the new york times is yeah but you
02:02were just down in north carolina with him and you took a photo with he and steve yes relationship with
02:08those two is does it seem normal does everything seem copacetic i mean listen when you're uh an
02:14employer an employee and you are copacetic there's no tea uh really no it's okay it's it's fine
02:23you added a tea but it's fine listen we're not playing scrabble right they always are you know let's
02:29check the dictionary is that a word um they're trying and at the end of the day when you're steve
02:37and you're you know a coordinator you're still trying to climb a ladder he's eventually he's
02:41trying to be a head coach right like he's trying to perform at a certain level now it doesn't matter
02:45if it's with the patriots or if it was with washington or now it's with carolina he's got a long way
02:51to go you know in in coaching so i think for him he's focused on doing well the team is doing well
02:57they have to especially for him because he's not gonna retire bill is closer to retirement in the
03:03next couple years what's bill gonna do i don't know but yeah i could either see him having a
03:08successful year in college and if he has an opportunity going back to the pros which you know
03:13the one thing i would say when you look at college and i was when you look and you watch a college team
03:19play there might be one or two professional players on the team so you're coaching a less
03:25talented roster which is to me challenging right it's challenging especially now with kids in there
03:31we talked about this last time i was on the show the nil and they're like i am him and i am me and
03:35all this stuff it's like no you're not even going to play in the league so you know look for a job
03:40yeah that's what you're going to be looking for you said steve wants to be a coach and i think that
03:44absolutely is true do you think that bill belichick still has part of the hope alive that a successful
03:50stint to north carolina will get him back to the nfl or do you think he's i was surprised that he
03:55didn't have an opportunity i mean i see i don't know the who the interview process was who was in
04:01who was out with him going back to the nfl right i was shocked that he didn't coach isn't coaching
04:08and he's coaching college right now but yeah like like certain people want different challenges so
04:13maybe that's a different challenge for him curtis brought this up earlier uh and it's it's worth
04:17delving into cbs oh god ranked the college coaches uh football wise for this upcoming season
04:27and they have bill ranked 54th yeah there was a uh cbs sports power coach rankings and bill belichick
04:36was 54th on the list is that surprising to you it is surprising it's shocking it's uh it's also
04:43you're having to coach the group of guys that you have on a roster so right unlike you know if bill
04:49was the the head coach in alabama or any he'd be number one right because they have the more powerful
04:54more talented roster and he's having to build that roster up and hopefully i didn't know this but
05:00the big 10 i guess they have to cut down scholarship to 105 yeah yeah so if you're carolina and you get
05:08to go up so like certain schools have scholarships to fill and other schools have to cut you're looking
05:13at like ohio state michigan all these big schools and you're trying to get some of these guys that they
05:17have to let go to come on to your program yeah because the new limit now is 105 and they had like
05:22115 it was 115 but generally those guys will walk on but now they can give up to 105 scholarships but
05:29some teams are still carrying a little bit less you were down there with him and it's going to be
05:33interesting for me i'm so fascinated to watch bill this year because i want to know how does his
05:40coaching style translate to young kids who are just don't have a football iq you know when you're in
05:50the league in your football iq and bill wants you to do this and situational football and you're
05:54coaching that and you got to know every moving part of the game what what's his coaching style like
06:00now is he still that i would say that he's similar in a sense of situational stuff the situational
06:05awareness trying to coach teach these kids how to understand parts of the game that they really
06:11don't understand and i didn't understand football until i got here really right right i was just
06:16athletic and see ball get ball you know like a golden retriever and a tennis ball like oh like go get the
06:22ball right and then when i got here bill's like all right listen like we got to change a few things
06:26on how you're playing you can't be past the quarterback you got to understand down a distance you got to know
06:30the formations you got to know i near i far split back gun all this stuff and that's that stuff you
06:36didn't learn i didn't learn in new orleans or miami or purdue honestly and purdue is a very it's like
06:43ivy league basically it's the ivy that's right it's an ivy league public school um you know for me
06:49it's football super especially defense if you're a four three defensive end it's it's pretty simple
06:56right you have your zone blitzing you have your gap schemes that's it so when i arrived to new
07:02england i was like wow hopefully i can get right because i was dropping when i was was rushing and
07:07i was rushing when i should be dropping so it was like a challenge to understand the whole thing but
07:11the defense and the way that he's approaching the college is definitely not as advanced okay as far as
07:18like the right team and so he's kind of like you know watering it down yeah like instead of having
07:22like 12 packages yeah groupings and they might have five well and that's the bigger thing because
07:27i think you hit the nail right on the head like when you get to the league you got to understand
07:32from a defensive perspective you got to understand offensive formation yeah and and vice versa as an
07:38offensive guy you got to understand defensive formations find safeties coverages look at corners
07:42so for these young kids who and you don't get that at any college level yeah i wonder how bill
07:49stop that's why i'm so fascinated to watch him coach because how does his style change because he
07:55knows they don't have that mental capacity yet to be able to retain all that stuff like he's been
08:01coaching for 50 years or six guys in the nfl when you're coaching lawrence taylor or you're coaching
08:07ninkovich or you're coaching willie mcginnis it's much easier than when you're coaching some kid who
08:13just came from high school or some kid who transferred from which is why coaching brockton was harder than
08:18the patriots job very hot high school kids guys yeah are the pats back they're fighting words right
08:24there are the pats back dome in the river right now i can't and they'll sue me are the i i will not see
08:30you talk about chimp we were talking about on the ride and i was listening to somebody says something
08:33to you you want to give him a little smack yeah a little chinch let's get jay miller to give him a
08:36smack jay i think he took off but then he's the guy hey i lied i do have an attorney stand in front of
08:42jay he's gonna take care of it yeah see you later that would stop all commenting on all social media
08:49what was your question are the pats back dick uh maybe listen if you spend 355 million you're hoping
08:55that i don't know maybe 200 of it works right because it's not all gonna work if it all works
09:02they're back right right when you pay a ton of money in free agency which they did you don't you don't
09:07know you don't know how that's going to work out because what's that song uh don't know what you
09:12got till i get my money oh hey over yes yes yes sorry it's good song right there when it comes to
09:22otas there are reports saying that this is a completely different situation than what bill
09:26had they're harder they look like they're faster harder yes wow longer pause the practices are harder
09:33oh okay so when it comes to rabel do you think that that's going to be i mean effective we'll find
09:39out because listen like it's the ota yeah shells on it's like oh they want a one-on-one if if i
09:46practice every day in an ota i would have played zero years in the nfl so it's just a good correlation
09:52between what ota's padded practices mean towards actual like how the team looks there's no pads on
09:59they're not hitting in each other like you know guys that you've seen guys in shells you're like
10:03wow that guy is a stud yeah you put pads on and he sucks so that's just the way football is if i would
10:10say if i was a young player right now in the league and the way the rules are i probably wouldn't make
10:14a roster because i needed padded practices to beat up guys that look terrible in pads and then people
10:20are like wow that's interesting yes i so when it is breathlessly reported that drake may had four
10:28interceptions and the hitch is back it uh it's it makes me roll my eyes and say who's the source
10:34you know some mickey mouse guy that played high school football he threw four interceptions in the
10:39first ota practice everybody like his hitch is back hey that's shine he's right there i'm sorry sorry
10:46so that hey it makes me want to hang now that would be bullying then no no that's when you get jay miller
10:51you get jay miller outsource it hang him up by his underwear doesn't matter yeah it's just like okay it's
10:56otas and also people don't realize that plays are scripted against certain plays to make the
11:03quarterback possibly throw an interception like hey okay we're going to run this over sale route
11:08and to cover three and we're going to make sure that he's having to run this play in a defense that
11:13is really hard to make it work nick where do you stand on the biggest controversial topic of the week
11:18at the owners meetings but the push yeah it's so stupid you know like stupid to ban or stupid
11:23put flags on them if you don't want them to get hurt you know like it's a play that is very
11:28successful but it's hard to stop defensively great but i figured it out but my thing is this though
11:34and i and i've been waiting to ask on listen what right again what i would do okay is i would have
11:39everybody pinch i would have a tight pinch right put two backers in the a gaps and wherever the
11:44quarterback goes i try and knock them out well the only thing i was saying why can't the defense the
11:48linebackers push the d line no i would have the linebacker standing right behind and wherever
11:53the quarterback goes left or right i'd put my helmet my helmet on his head right i'd try to
11:57make no no i do that play i get that but the thing that i look at it and i and i because i'm against it
12:02in the sense that i feel like now comes the back pedal no there's no back pedal i'm against it because
12:07i feel like the defense is at a disadvantage because the linebackers can't push the defensive lineman
12:13and no matter you know how it is if you're getting going against somebody and there's somebody
12:19pushing that guy i want to tell you a crazy story right all right first year playing football i was
12:23in third grade right okay i was a little bit chunky so they put me in a garbage bag you look good they
12:28made me run and i had to lose 10 pounds right so i'd run around the field with a garbage bag on
12:33imagine in 2025 people oh my god sue them um but they had this cage where running backs would go into
12:40right and they would put an offensive guy and a defensive lineman in the cage it was really low
12:44and if you got too high it was steel you'd hit your head they'd have a coach behind each player
12:49and they would shove each other into each other buying it now imagine that third graders oh yeah
12:55shoving them into just boom and you'd be like oh my god i have a school thing i got
13:00yeah and then i couldn't pass math so i blame it on that wiggie's issue is that it's unfair unfair
13:08yeah uh when it comes to the d because they cannot do the same thing i said the d lineman
13:15they can't push like that you could put two guys behind jalen hurts and push him but you can't put
13:20nobody behind a defensive tackle and push those guys i'd try to figure it out i'd have my nose
13:25either take the ankles out of the the line like dive to their ankles try and make a pile and then
13:30have linebackers come up top and clean it up but you but for me if the offense has an advantage and
13:36it's a clear advantage i i like that like defensively it's like okay how do we stop
13:41right what bill bill wouldn't look to ban the rule he don't say let's stop it it's part of the game
13:45right now and some so there's always going to be something that comes up that either side takes
13:50advantage of like i don't do you remember in the playoffs where we had you know who man who man
13:54come in yeah yeah unbalanced and the ravens were freaking out because they thought it was an illegal
13:59formation we ran it three times in a row they were wide open wide open where they wanted to ban
14:04something like but see that because of the the way they reported was supposed to be like that was
14:08the cause of deflate gate because oh i'm not getting into deflate but listen brady said know
14:13the rule book john harbaugh alerted the colts and that's why we let me tell you let me tell you a
14:17quick story about uh ball pressure okay so my nine-year-old's in the championship next next
14:22weekend we're playing in the championship flag football championships right so this past weekend
14:26we're playing in a game and uh the other team is they were complaining that our ball was a little too
14:32soft right are you serious oh yes so i said okay take you know you bring your own ball in whatever
14:39so at the end of the game they had a big play the kid dropped it and he yells like the ball's too
14:44hard i started dying i'm like see hey if you just would have had the softer football you maybe caught
14:49it you know it's like oh my i cannot believe that you got a ball a psi complaint what the ball
14:55for with a bunch of nine-year-old nine-year-old oh yeah oh god he played for the patriots they're
15:01taking air out of the ball cheating what a loser how um so how many this this team how many more
15:09wins you expect from them this this season oh they have four last year yeah last two years
15:15they bought four more so let's say eight to ten okay you know depending on the scheduling i know the
15:19schedule just came out but you know for me you have to have i've said this year after year you have to
15:24have realistic expectations i know you have the patriot fan out there that's eager to get back to
15:29the playoffs they're like they're a wild card team now they're gonna win one yeah it's like let's just
15:33see how the offensive line shapes up i like the first round pick you know i i love the one word
15:38analogy of nasty yeah like you know explain explain to us in one word how would you describe your game
15:45nasty all right i'm here to protect my quarterback like it's just that you like him i like that even
15:51though they say yeah he's a little country southern boy um but i i you look at just the way that they
15:57kind of went about the free agency i like who they picked up that moses guy there's a good really good
16:02football player when i played against him which is dating him when he was with uh the commanders
16:09he was a good player and uh we talked after the game and i and i respect him he's a really good
16:13football player so hopefully he's a guy that a young player can attach himself to and kind of learn from
16:18you know how do you go about being successful yeah campbell said he's working with him every
16:22day after practice have you heard from mayo at all i talked to him a couple weeks ago you know he's
16:26you know listen when you're a coach you're absent from a lot of things that you wish you could be
16:31involved in so now i think he's present which is great you know so he's doing a lot of stuff with
16:35his children and uh you know you can't that's one thing you can't get back it's time so i'm hopefully
16:40he's investing a lot of time in the kids right now which i think if i were him i'd be like where was
16:44this staff where was this spending when i got the job robert yeah that's uh it's a fortunate part of
16:49the football journey that we all go through right you know really screwed you over because you were
16:53counting on a gig over there no you know i think i'm going to take your job it seems pretty easy
16:58where's the next read you can have it you can have it all right can i round of applause for the great
17:04rob thank you guys thanks rob you're the best
