Dr. Eswai is called by Inspector Kruger to a small village to perform an autopsy on a woman who died under suspicious circumstances. Despite help from the village witch Ruth, Kruger is killed, and it is revealed that the dead woman and other villagers were killed by the ghost of Melissa, a young girl who, fed by the hatred of her grieving mother, Baroness Graps, exacted her revenge on them. With local nurse Monica, Dr. Eswai is lured into a fateful confrontation at the Villa Graps.

00:00:00You
00:00:08You
00:00:30Oh, no!
00:01:01Oh, no!
00:01:03Oh, no!
00:01:05Oh, God!
00:01:07Oh, no!
00:01:11Oh, no!
00:01:14No!
00:01:15No!
00:03:47I don't know.
00:04:18So you're still determined to go to this town, Doctor?
00:04:21See? That's the kind of welcome you get in Kirmingham.
00:04:24Yes. I'd like my money now, Doctor.
00:04:27I'm curious at what a coroner's doing here.
00:04:29Well, all the same, I'd rather stop than find out.
00:04:32This is as far as I go.
00:04:35I don't mind admitting that I'm afraid.
00:04:37I only bought you in the first place because I need the 30 crowns.
00:04:41It's just a little further to the inn, through that arch.
00:04:44You won't have any trouble finding it.
00:04:46Ask anybody. It's the only one in town.
00:04:51Thank you, sir.
00:04:52Ever see the like?
00:04:54When a place is as bad as this, it's been cursed, I tell you.
00:04:57And strangers should keep their distance, if they know what's good for them.
00:05:05I'm afraid I can't help you.
00:05:07What's good for them?
00:05:11Here you're a stranger, Doctor, and people will be scared.
00:05:14Hey!
00:05:17Giddy up! Giddy up!
00:05:37Giddy up!
00:06:08I'm looking for the inn. Can you tell me where it is?
00:06:11It's around there, sir.
00:06:37Giddy up!
00:07:07Giddy up!
00:07:37Giddy up!
00:07:55Has the inspector come?
00:07:57I was to meet him here.
00:07:59Inspector Kruger.
00:08:01Yes. You'll be the coroner, I figure.
00:08:04Coroners had better mind their business around these parts.
00:08:07Hold your tongue!
00:08:09Dr. Esway?
00:08:10Yes.
00:08:13Finally.
00:08:15This way, please. The inspector is waiting for you.
00:08:24Make sense!
00:08:29I told you all I know of your Anna Hollander.
00:08:31I didn't even know her, Inspector.
00:08:33And like all the others here, you never saw, never heard a thing.
00:08:36Why do you all say the same nonsense?
00:08:38What do you take me for, some idiot?
00:08:40Why can't you speak up?
00:08:42What keeps your tongue tied this way?
00:08:44Are you afraid? What are you afraid of?
00:08:46Tell me why!
00:08:49A charm.
00:08:52Against evil.
00:08:54That's the sort of stupidity I'm facing.
00:08:56The superstition and ignorance around here.
00:08:59I'll learn what's behind the fear of this mysterious Irene Hollander.
00:09:02I swear it.
00:09:05It's about time you came.
00:09:07I've been worried about you.
00:09:09I left as soon as I heard from you.
00:09:11But it's not an easy place to reach, Inspector Kruger.
00:09:13We might as well live on the moon.
00:09:15Hardly anyone comes our way.
00:09:19This is Hercaro, the burgomaster.
00:09:22That's all for the present, but wait downstairs with the others.
00:09:25How long have you been in town?
00:09:27Only for a short time.
00:09:29I'm faced with a problem which you must unravel.
00:09:33Read what this letter says.
00:09:36It was written by Irene Hollander,
00:09:38a young girl employed as a maid in a local villa.
00:09:41The villa is the Baroness Grapp's.
00:09:47To the police.
00:09:49Now I must speak out and break away from the ring of murder about me.
00:09:53Please come at once, since I feel the next one to die is me,
00:09:56Irene Hollander.
00:09:59When that letter was delivered to the police,
00:10:01I set out at once to talk to her,
00:10:03to see if she was telling the truth.
00:10:05But when I got here, the poor woman was dead.
00:10:07She had fallen on the spikes of a gate.
00:10:09Homicide?
00:10:10I don't know yet.
00:10:12I'm inclined to think it was an accident myself.
00:10:15But that letter doesn't prove it.
00:10:17I'm afraid it does.
00:10:19I'm inclined to think it was an accident myself.
00:10:22But that letter doesn't permit us to assume.
00:10:26That's what you are here to establish, Doctor,
00:10:28by performing an autopsy.
00:10:31Bürgermeister, we'll resume the interrogation later.
00:10:35No one is to leave town.
00:10:39What have they told you so far, Inspector?
00:10:42Nothing.
00:10:44It's like running headlong into a wall of silence.
00:10:47They're suspicious, distrustful.
00:10:51And the way they'd react to my questions.
00:10:53You'd think they were in terror of their lives.
00:10:56I suppose we must make allowances for their distrust of any strangers.
00:11:00The two of us, remember, represent the only legal authority they've ever seen.
00:11:04Their only creed is superstition, you see.
00:11:07But once you've seen them rushing a coffin to the cemetery...
00:11:09What's that? When?
00:11:11By chance, on arrival.
00:11:13I know what that means.
00:11:15They want to prevent having an autopsy done on Irene Hollander.
00:11:18Please, Doctor, we must hurry.
00:11:23Rudolf! Oscar! Stop!
00:11:31What's the meaning of this?
00:11:33Who gave you the order to bury her? Didn't I tell you not to?
00:11:36The Doctor came here especially to perform an autopsy first.
00:11:39It shouldn't touch the dead. It's against nature.
00:11:42Take her back to the cottage.
00:11:44How soon can you begin, Doctor?
00:11:46Immediately, but I need a witness with the proper qualifications.
00:11:48It's customary, and I must insist.
00:11:50I told you to take the corpse inside, and you'd better.
00:11:54I've already found you the right witness.
00:11:56Inspector. Inspector Kruger, I've been sent by the Burgermeister.
00:12:01Come back to the inn right now, he says.
00:12:03Those men you wanted to question have all run away.
00:12:06He says he must speak to you right away.
00:12:08Very well. Tell him I'll come.
00:12:11Will you be ready, Doctor, to begin when the witness gets here?
00:12:14Of course.
00:12:25Herr Karl.
00:12:30Herr Karl.
00:12:33Why did you let them disobey you?
00:12:35But, Inspector, I have no power to enforce your orders.
00:12:41I tried to reason with them to stay a little longer.
00:12:45But once it got about you were interfering with a burial, they ran away.
00:12:58Evidently, my dear sir, you have no authority with your citizens.
00:13:02You're wrong. It's not a question of authority.
00:13:07Inspector, I beg you, don't let the doctor make an autopsy.
00:13:11I have to solve this case.
00:13:13You can solve it without touching the body of that dead girl.
00:13:18Perhaps you influence what others do, but I have a will of my own.
00:13:21You and the others are trying to protect someone in this town.
00:13:24No.
00:13:26Inspector Kruger, I feel the time has come to explain.
00:13:30I mean, this silence, it seems a conspiracy.
00:13:33Not one man is protecting anyone.
00:13:41But himself, because he's scared.
00:13:44He can't confess he's afraid either.
00:13:47I can tell you of my own terror.
00:13:49At what I must be risking here.
00:13:52As I revealed to you.
00:13:56The secret of Villagraps.
00:13:58Villagraps?
00:13:59It may sound like the utmost stupidity.
00:14:02I know if you insist on laws of science,
00:14:04you'll find it hard to believe.
00:14:07But I'm sure that Irene Hollander
00:14:09did not kill herself or die of either an accident or a murder.
00:14:30Dr. Esfai.
00:14:33Yes?
00:14:37I'm Monica Shufton.
00:14:39The inspector told me I was needed as a witness.
00:14:46Well, I'm one of the physicians here.
00:14:48I'm sure you'll be fine.
00:14:50I'm sure you'll be fine.
00:14:52I'm sure you'll be fine.
00:14:54I'm sure you'll be fine.
00:14:57Well, I wanted a physician to help me.
00:15:00I study natural science at Grotenburg.
00:15:03No one else could be of any use to you here.
00:15:06You're a native here then?
00:15:08Yes, you could say I am.
00:15:10But I went away when I was two years old.
00:15:13Oddly enough, I came home for the first time on the day she died.
00:15:18You mind staying here while I perform the autopsy?
00:15:21I don't mind.
00:15:56Ha, ha, ha!
00:16:07Ha, ha, ha!
00:16:26Ha, ha, ha!
00:16:56Ha, ha, ha!
00:17:26I can't explain it.
00:17:29How can anyone have put this into her heart?
00:17:32People have a saying like that here.
00:17:37A very old saying.
00:17:39It goes back centuries.
00:17:41They say,
00:17:43only with money in the heart,
00:17:46can a woman have a child.
00:17:49That's a very old saying.
00:17:51It goes back centuries.
00:17:54Only with money in the heart,
00:17:56will one who suffers a violent death,
00:17:59ever rest in peace.
00:18:23Even so, we still can't prove whether it was suicide or an accident,
00:18:27or something else.
00:18:29I know, Paul.
00:18:31But that coin,
00:18:33who could have wanted to put it in the girl's heart?
00:18:36Unless that person killed her.
00:18:38Don't think about it, Monica. Let's leave it to Inspector Kruger.
00:18:41He'll find out the truth.
00:18:42I hope he does soon.
00:18:44Well, I don't go any farther. I'm staying here.
00:18:54Monica.
00:18:58I don't want to sound curious,
00:19:00but I'm wondering why you came back here.
00:19:03If you want to know, I came to visit my parents' graves.
00:19:06I never knew either one.
00:19:08But I was left a small inheritance,
00:19:10and that's what I used to live on, you see.
00:19:15Well, thank you, Monica.
00:19:17I think you're a very brave young lady.
00:19:21And now I should say good night.
00:19:23Good night, Monica.
00:19:51Good night.
00:20:22I warned you once not to profane dead bodies, doctor.
00:20:26Anybody who does this is going to pay with his life.
00:20:37You should have listened.
00:20:39You should have let us bury that girl.
00:20:42It's your own fault.
00:20:44You should have listened.
00:20:46You should have let us bury that girl.
00:20:49It's your own fault.
00:20:55Stop!
00:21:19Stop!
00:21:49Doctor.
00:21:51Doctor.
00:21:53The inspector's gone to Villa Graps
00:21:55because it was urgent, he said.
00:21:57He went out over an hour ago, and he left you a message upstairs.
00:22:00Did he tell you when he'd be back?
00:22:02You don't come back from Villa Graps.
00:22:05What? What makes you say that?
00:22:08I didn't say so. I didn't say so.
00:22:11I didn't say so.
00:22:13I didn't say so.
00:22:15I didn't say so.
00:22:17I didn't say so. I didn't say it.
00:22:20No, I swear, I never said it.
00:22:22You'll find your supper ready in your room upstairs, doctor.
00:22:47You'll find your supper ready in your room upstairs, doctor.
00:23:17No. No. Not to me.
00:23:20I didn't say so. I didn't say so.
00:23:22What is it, Nadine?
00:23:24I saw her face at the window.
00:23:26You saw her, Nadine?
00:23:28What's wrong?
00:23:29The child has seen her.
00:23:30She's after our daughter, and now there's no help for her.
00:23:33I'll get Ruth. Maybe she can help.
00:23:35Fetch her right away. Run, Fetcher. Run, ma'am.
00:23:38Run, Fetcher.
00:23:40Run, Fetcher.
00:23:42Run, Fetcher.
00:23:44Run, Fetcher.
00:23:46Run, Fetcher. Run, ma'am.
00:23:48Run.
00:23:57What evil should I keep her from?
00:23:59We can tell if someone's in harm's way.
00:24:07Dear Dr. Asway,
00:24:08Burgomaster Carl has told me of something here that strikes me as incredible.
00:24:11Nevertheless, I feel it my duty to go to Villa Graps,
00:24:14since only the Baroness herself can confirm the story.
00:24:17Join me there as soon as you can, Inspector Kruger.
00:24:35Don't be afraid, Nadine.
00:24:37Nothing will happen to you.
00:24:39She won't be able to do you any harm,
00:24:41if you do as I tell you.
00:24:44Come on.
00:25:14Come on.
00:25:44Take off her blouse.
00:26:14Come on.
00:26:45Death.
00:26:47Where you can find no door, you will come no more.
00:26:53Lift your hand from her flesh and her blood.
00:26:57Keep away.
00:27:00Keep away.
00:27:03Keep away.
00:27:14Keep away.
00:27:45She's outside.
00:27:47I swear she's outside.
00:27:49She's waiting for a chance to punish me.
00:27:51She can't be, Nadine.
00:27:53She's outside.
00:27:59This will protect you.
00:28:02You shouldn't remove it.
00:28:15I finished.
00:28:17No, go out this way, so no one will see you.
00:28:44I could call it sorcerer if you wanted.
00:28:48But why did you cast a spell on her?
00:28:52If you'd only help me.
00:28:54If I only knew something about how you treat them.
00:28:56Why do they call you as though you were practicing medicine?
00:28:59Are they all mad or what?
00:29:01You wouldn't understand the people here, Doctor.
00:29:04Everyone knows there's a curse over them.
00:29:08Idena Hollander's death was predictable to us.
00:29:12Did she cause it?
00:29:14She was forced to, Doctor.
00:29:16It's something your science cannot explain.
00:29:19The inspector must be warned all the same.
00:29:22If you value your lives, leave tonight.
00:29:25Don't go on with this inquest.
00:29:31Inspector Kruger is at Villa Graps now looking for information.
00:29:34A thorough level-headed man like him can't be held back by superstition.
00:29:37He'll uncover the truth.
00:29:39Which way is it to the villa? He wants me to join him there as soon as I can.
00:29:43Don't go there, Doctor. Take my advice.
00:29:46Don't set foot in that place.
00:29:48You all speak of this villa as though you were afraid to mention it by name.
00:29:52That's another mystery I want to clear up.
00:30:10Villa Graps is there.
00:30:14One moment, Ruth.
00:30:18There is one deed I suspect you did.
00:30:21Who drove this coin into Irena Hollander's heart?
00:30:27Perhaps if I knew why, it would help.
00:30:30There's good reason you shouldn't know why.
00:30:33That house holds the answer...
00:30:36since you're determined to find out.
00:30:39Thank you. We'll talk some more later on.
00:30:48Nobody talks who enters that villa.
00:31:37Oh, Karl, my dearest.
00:31:40What is it?
00:31:42We've another one.
00:31:52It's a chain of bloodshed.
00:31:55It's a chain of bloodshed.
00:31:58It's a chain of bloodshed.
00:32:01It's a chain of bloodshed.
00:32:04It's a chain of bloodshed...
00:32:07that there's no use trying to break.
00:32:10But Villa Graps...
00:32:13it could be done.
00:32:16With other blood.
00:32:18And nothing else can it be ended and finally broken.
00:32:24But hurry, Karl.
00:32:26Order a court to fetch this tonight.
00:32:29Since the others are looking for him...
00:32:32he'll become like one of them...
00:32:35a remorseless ghost.
00:33:03They'll never make you one of them...
00:33:06if I can help it.
00:33:32Kruger!
00:34:02Inspector Kruger!
00:34:32Inspector Kruger!
00:35:02Inspector Kruger!
00:35:33Oh, excuse me.
00:35:35What have you done?
00:35:37Why, nothing.
00:35:39I was to join a colleague here.
00:35:41Inspector Kruger.
00:35:43There's no inspector here.
00:35:45But the inspector left this evening...
00:35:47to call on Baroness Graps.
00:35:49I'm Baroness Graps and I should know.
00:35:51No one ever pays me a call or is received here.
00:35:54Now go away.
00:35:56No, please listen.
00:35:58I'm sure the inspector's here.
00:36:00Get out of my sight or you'll be sorry.
00:36:30Get out of my sight.
00:37:00Go.
00:37:31No.
00:37:34Leave me.
00:37:58Leave me, please.
00:38:04Leave me.
00:38:23Hello.
00:38:28Tell me, what's your name?
00:38:35Melissa.
00:38:38My name is Melissa.
00:39:04Melissa.
00:39:07Melissa.
00:39:33Melissa.
00:39:36Melissa.
00:40:06Melissa.
00:40:36Melissa.
00:41:06No.
00:41:09No.
00:41:37Help.
00:41:59Frau Morgan, open the door, Frau Morgan.
00:42:02What do you want?
00:42:05I'm frightened. Let me stay with you tonight.
00:42:07Go away. I don't want you near me.
00:42:10You should never have touched that dead girl.
00:42:22Paul.
00:42:24Monica. What is it, Monica?
00:42:26I won't stay there anymore.
00:42:28What's wrong?
00:42:30It's stupid, Paul.
00:42:32But the nightmare I had, I won't stay there anymore.
00:42:34I was brought on by the autopsy, that's all.
00:42:37The bell rope isn't moving.
00:42:40The sound of that bell.
00:42:43It's ringing.
00:42:46It's ringing.
00:42:49It's ringing.
00:42:52It's ringing.
00:42:55It's ringing.
00:42:58It's ringing.
00:43:01It's ringing.
00:43:04The sound of that bell.
00:43:07Paul, it frightens me.
00:43:09Even if it is the wind.
00:43:34It was the wind.
00:43:37I thought so.
00:43:40No, doctor.
00:43:43It's not like you figured.
00:43:46It was the ghost.
00:43:49It was the ghost that moved it.
00:43:52It always rings like that when anyone is marked for dying.
00:43:55Ever since she bled to death,
00:43:58it's been ringing like that.
00:44:01She?
00:44:04She couldn't have been more than six or seven.
00:44:07She tried to pull the rope of that bell to summon help and she died holding it.
00:44:10Her name was Melissa.
00:44:13Melissa.
00:44:16Look here, this young lady needs a room for the night.
00:44:19Please see to it right away.
00:44:22By the way, have you seen Inspector Kruger?
00:44:25Not since this afternoon.
00:44:28Martha.
00:44:31Martha, run upstairs and make sure a room is ready for this young lady.
00:44:34Yes, right away.
00:44:43Paul, did you realize what he said?
00:44:46It wasn't the wind that made that bell toll.
00:44:49Monica, you can't really think that.
00:44:52Something in this town is supernatural.
00:44:55Tell me, why did they abandon the church?
00:44:58I'm scared. I almost think the devil's here.
00:45:01No, just poverty and ignorance combined with superstition.
00:45:04Your room is ready.
00:45:13Good night, Monica.
00:45:16Good night, Paul, and thank you.
00:45:25Good night.
00:45:28Let's go.
00:45:51Lydine.
00:45:54Lydine, what's wrong?
00:45:57When did this start?
00:46:02What are you doing to her?
00:46:04Leave her alone. It's no affair of yours.
00:46:06I know what's best for my own daughter.
00:46:08Don't you dare touch her.
00:46:15A leech vine.
00:46:19My God, I've had enough of this business.
00:46:22You want to kill the child?
00:46:27No.
00:46:32No, Paul.
00:46:36Are you crazy?
00:46:38This isn't sorcery, it's torture.
00:46:42She could have died from that around her.
00:46:46But we've tried to protect her from that.
00:46:49You're not able to save her.
00:46:52Hold your tongue. Don't frighten her.
00:46:57Let's go.
00:47:19There's no danger, Lydine.
00:47:22You'll be fine soon.
00:47:25Don't worry.
00:47:28She's chosen me.
00:47:31She's chosen me.
00:47:34I know it.
00:47:37You can't save me now.
00:47:55You can't save me now.
00:48:18She's in shock. Her pulse is irregular.
00:48:25The best thing is to let her rest. I'll give her a sedative.
00:48:32I left my bag upstairs. Come with me, please.
00:48:35Give this to Nadine when she wakes up, but no more than 20 drops.
00:48:38I will.
00:48:41And if you should need me, call me at once.
00:48:44Yes, yes. Thank you, Doctor.
00:48:49I'm sorry.
00:48:52I'm sorry.
00:48:55I'm sorry.
00:48:58I'm sorry.
00:49:01I'm sorry.
00:49:04I'm sorry.
00:49:34I'm sorry.
00:49:37I'm sorry.
00:49:40I'm sorry.
00:49:43I'm sorry.
00:49:46I'm sorry.
00:49:49I'm sorry.
00:49:52I'm sorry.
00:49:55I'm sorry.
00:49:58I'm sorry.
00:50:01I'm sorry.
00:50:05I'm sorry.
00:50:09I'm sorry.
00:50:12I'm sorry.
00:50:15Come on, keep digging! We don't have much time!
00:51:01Faster! Faster!
00:51:31I just saw a light in the cemetery. There's someone there.
00:51:55I know, I saw it too. Perhaps it's Inspector Kruger. If so, he must have found the answer.
00:52:02No, no, don't go out there. It probably isn't Inspector Kruger. What would he be doing there at this hour?
00:52:09I don't know, but I'll find out.
00:52:39Kruger?
00:53:09Kruger?
00:53:37Kruger?
00:53:58Kruger?
00:54:17No!
00:54:42No!
00:55:12Kruger?
00:55:34Kruger?
00:56:00Kruger?
00:56:08The Burgermeister lives here.
00:56:19Herr Kopf?
00:56:24Are you there?
00:56:42Yes, I'm here. Come in.
00:56:50Come in, Doctor. I've been waiting for you to call.
00:56:56I just found the corpse of Inspector Kruger in the cemetery.
00:57:00I know. I had it taken there.
00:57:03I'm sure you know who put the pistol to his head.
00:57:05You must mind your language, Doctor.
00:57:08That's not an accusation, is it?
00:57:10You'll say he was a victim of the supernatural, even.
00:57:13I bet he also was prepared for the next world.
00:57:16Yes. But merely to keep his ghost from committing crimes.
00:57:21Like Melissa's.
00:57:24A measure that must seem barbaric to a man in your position, I'm afraid.
00:57:28I read what you testified to Inspector Kruger.
00:57:31Nobody listened to that ridiculous legend.
00:57:33I thought it was at first.
00:57:37But then I learned it's not a legend.
00:57:39It's the truth.
00:57:41Since the death of Melissa, more than ten persons in this town have met similar deaths.
00:57:46All were young and healthy.
00:57:48Completely rational.
00:57:50Innocent persons.
00:57:52Anyone here is in danger of the same fate, Doctor.
00:57:55Go away. Otherwise you may be next.
00:57:58And this young lady should leave at once.
00:58:00She shouldn't have come back, for it's not really her birthplace.
00:58:03You know who I am.
00:58:05I was born here, and my parents as well.
00:58:08The tombs that you laid your wreaths upon in devotion are not where your relatives are.
00:58:14And the Schuftons didn't have any children.
00:58:20But that's impossible. It can't be true.
00:58:23Why do you say that?
00:58:25I'll prove it to you.
00:58:28The Schuftons placed certain documents in a sealed envelope in my keeping,
00:58:31to be delivered to you if you ever returned.
00:58:34The seals have never been broken.
00:58:36The Schuftons were employed at Villa Graps.
00:58:40As you will learn, Monica, your background too is linked with that villa.
00:58:52I'll go fetch you the documents now.
00:58:59As for you, Doctor, the facts you're looking for can only be found at Villa Graps.
00:59:06I'm beginning to wonder if it's true.
00:59:36I'm beginning to wonder if it's true.
01:00:06No! No!
01:00:19Carl!
01:00:21Carl!
01:00:24Carl!
01:00:31No! No!
01:00:34Edgar! Edgar! Edgar!
01:00:47Edgar, let me in!
01:00:52Let me in!
01:00:54Open the door!
01:01:04Edgar!
01:01:26Monica!
01:01:35Monica!
01:01:38Monica!
01:01:41I can't stand it anymore, Paul. They're going to kill us all.
01:01:44Stop it, Monica. Get a hold of yourself.
01:01:46But they're going to kill us all. I know it, Paul. I know it.
01:01:49Calm down.
01:01:54We have to get help from someone.
01:01:57Come on.
01:02:05Come outside, you hear me?
01:02:13The Burgermeister's been killed, you cowards!
01:02:21You'll all be killed if you don't help each other.
01:02:25Paul, they won't show their faces out of doors.
01:02:28They're too afraid to.
01:02:31The innkeeper.
01:02:34I've got reason to kill you.
01:02:36Like you killed the pitiful creature that was my child,
01:02:39bled to death, my Nadine.
01:02:42But they'll get you.
01:02:44I hope they do, and save me firing this bullet.
01:02:47Now, get out!
01:02:50The bell!
01:03:20The bell!
01:03:46Monica!
01:03:51Monica!
01:03:58Where are you?
01:04:09Monica!
01:04:12Monica!
01:04:16Monica!
01:04:25What is it?
01:04:28It's strange, Paul.
01:04:31I came here as though I knew exactly where to find this passage.
01:04:36I feel as though I've been here before.
01:04:45Paul, I know I've never been in here,
01:04:48but still, this place seems very familiar to me somehow.
01:05:00The lock has sprung. We're shut inside without a key.
01:05:09We can't possibly break out.
01:05:15Let's see if there's another exit.
01:05:45This must be a family tomb.
01:06:15Melissa Grubbs.
01:06:46Maybe we can get out through here.
01:06:51No, it's impossible. It's much too high.
01:07:15Paul!
01:07:35Paul!
01:07:38That's Melissa.
01:07:41Melissa.
01:07:45My sweet child.
01:07:48But what are you doing here?
01:07:51You've no right disturbing my child.
01:07:54She'll be frightened, poor thing.
01:07:57In this town, there's something going on that's frightening us all.
01:08:00That's pleasant news to me.
01:08:03They should tremble in terror of Melissa Grubbs.
01:08:06They were the ones who let my baby die.
01:08:09It was all their fault.
01:08:12The festival.
01:08:15Melissa had lost her ball and ran after it.
01:08:20They trampled her with their horses.
01:08:23She begged for mercy.
01:08:26But they were too drunk to hear.
01:08:29People who saw it were no better.
01:08:33She bled to death as they watched.
01:08:36They still regret it.
01:08:40Now come along.
01:08:43Come and see.
01:08:46Come on.
01:08:55Everything.
01:08:59Everything is just as it was that day.
01:09:02Just look. It was 20 years ago.
01:09:05Her playthings are all here.
01:09:08A happy, carefree little thing.
01:09:11She liked to look at herself.
01:09:16But she wasn't tall enough.
01:09:19So she had to stand on tiptoe to reach the mirror.
01:09:27This was her favorite doll.
01:09:31Nothing has been touched since Melissa arranged it.
01:09:35She had a place for everything.
01:09:38She was very meticulous, you know.
01:09:44Melissa. Melissa.
01:09:47Paul!
01:09:55Paul!
01:09:58Paul!
01:10:15Paul!
01:10:18Paul!
01:10:28Paul!
01:10:44No.
01:10:58No.
01:11:28Paul!
01:11:59Paul!
01:12:10You've escaped, Dr. Esway.
01:12:13If you had such a chance.
01:12:16They were driving you to desperation. I sensed it.
01:12:20Just in time.
01:12:23If you had been left with them a moment longer, it would have been too late.
01:12:29What did you intend to do?
01:12:32This silver coin wasn't meant for you, but for Carl.
01:12:47I tried everything in my power to prevent this.
01:12:51There's nothing else I can do for my poor Carl anymore.
01:12:54I've lived in dread of this moment as long as I've known him.
01:13:00I've loved you so much.
01:13:06What's there for me to live for now without him?
01:13:13I'll avenge you, Carl.
01:13:16And even if it takes my own blood to destroy that evil creature.
01:13:19Monica.
01:13:22Monica.
01:13:25But where's Monica?
01:13:28I'm afraid there's no hope for Monica.
01:13:31She's also a child of Baroness Graps and Melissa's sister.
01:13:34Yes, Monica.
01:13:37You too were my baby girl.
01:13:40But wait, dearest. I will show you your picture.
01:13:46The Schuftons were only my servants.
01:13:49They didn't care about your education.
01:13:52But if you really are my mother, why couldn't I stay with you?
01:13:56Because it was dangerous in this villa.
01:13:59I was afraid you'd be killed.
01:14:03Here, Monica.
01:14:06You were only two years old then.
01:14:09And this is your sister, Melissa.
01:14:14Everyone else in this house was killed.
01:14:17Melissa caused their deaths.
01:14:20They were victims of her hate.
01:14:23How could Melissa kill?
01:14:26She's dead and buried.
01:14:29No. No.
01:14:32I've seen her, and so have you.
01:14:35It serves people right to live in fear of her.
01:14:38I know.
01:14:41I'm the medium she uses.
01:14:44I just can't control them when they come.
01:14:47The ghosts in this house are people who've hated me.
01:14:52Through me, they're innocent victims.
01:14:55Her curse has been fulfilled.
01:14:58I know. The ghost they want is mine.
01:15:01They're hoping that I'll become the same as they.
01:15:04I have no control over them. Melissa doesn't care.
01:15:07And I'm so afraid.
01:15:10No. No.
01:15:13Not a word you say is true. I won't listen.
01:15:16I must find Paul. Help me, I beg you.
01:15:19Save yourself. Go away.
01:15:22I know. They're coming now.
01:15:25I hear them.
01:15:28Let's leave this villa.
01:15:31You mustn't, Melissa.
01:15:34Run away. Run away, I tell you.
01:15:41They want to get you, too.
01:15:44Melissa has waited for you for 20 years.
01:15:47Run away.
01:15:50Run for your life.
01:16:10Melissa.
01:16:40Paul.
01:17:10Paul.
01:17:40Paul.
01:18:10Paul.
01:18:40Melissa.
01:18:43You're here.
01:18:46No. Baroness Kraps.
01:18:49You have killed for the last time.
01:18:54Because I'm going to kill you.
01:18:57I have come to put an end to this bloodshed.
01:19:05You are inviting your own end.
01:19:08You are destined to die in this villa.
01:19:11I am keeping the promise that we made.
01:19:14You broke it.
01:19:17They shall have you now.
01:19:20No, that's beyond your sorcery.
01:19:26But they will get you.
01:19:29I swore to avenge Carl.
01:19:32I kept you free of Melissa's ghost.
01:19:35But only for as long as you kept her from him.
01:19:38Now you will pay for him and all your other victims.
01:19:41You are the cause of it all.
01:19:44You called Melissa from the dead...
01:19:47to murder those you hated.
01:19:50Now they have made you the object of Melissa's curse.
01:19:53No. I tell her not to.
01:19:56She doesn't listen to me, believe me.
01:19:59They control her. It's not my fault. I didn't send her to Carl.
01:20:02You're lying.
01:20:05You are afraid of Melissa, even if you are a medium.
01:20:08You put her against the poor creatures to be killed by her.
01:20:12And now you shall be.
01:20:15She'll defend you the way you defended them.
01:20:19But once you're one of them, you'll never get free.
01:20:23You think so?
01:20:26You're an insane killer.
01:20:29You would even let her kill your daughter, Monica.
01:20:33Yes, if I had to.
01:20:36The chieftains made off with her through the passage leading to the church.
01:20:40They never thought Melissa would overtake them.
01:20:43She did one day.
01:20:46Monica will die. You will be killed too, Ruth.
01:20:50Everybody will.
01:20:54Monica!
01:20:59Monica!
01:21:30Monica!
01:21:33Monica!
01:21:36Monica, let me in! Open the door!
01:21:40No!
01:21:46No!
01:21:49No!
01:21:52No!
01:21:55No!
01:21:58No!
01:22:01No!
01:22:04Pray murderers,
01:22:07if you can, before you die.
01:22:10And take your devil's daughter with you.
01:22:13Monica!
01:22:29Now my...
01:22:32nightmare is over.
01:22:35Jane is broken.
01:22:38I have kept my promise.
