Ryan Roberts bases his predictions for CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey on Notre Dame Fighting Irish QBs of the past!
Transcript
00:00C.J. Carr, Kenny Minchie, for the first time in a very long time,
00:03Notre Dame football will have a first-year starter with zero career starts
00:08under their belt heading into the season.
00:10Let's talk about expectations and what we should fully look for
00:14entering the 2025 season.
00:19Ryan Roberts from A to Z Sports bringing down everything Notre Dame football.
00:23Folks, with Steve Angeli transferring to Syracuse this offseason,
00:27we now know one certainty in this Notre Dame quarterback battle.
00:31Whether it is Richard Freshman C.J. Carr, Richard Sophomore Kenny Minchie,
00:35we are going to have a starting quarterback in the blue and gold this year
00:39that has no previous starts in their career entering the season.
00:45Now, I went back to the year 2005, so I wanted a 20-year sample size.
00:51Obviously, Brady Quinn was the starting quarterback in 2005,
00:54and I went through every single year to try to find guys that fit this criteria.
01:00Players that were starting quarterbacks that had no previous starting experience
01:05entering the season.
01:06And what I found was some very good, some not as good, and some in between.
01:13And I want to work through this data to show that we need to kind of cite expectations
01:19and understand that there are going to be ups and downs this year,
01:22whether it's Carr or Minchie under center.
01:25Now, the players that I look back on, and the article I wrote at A to Z Sports
01:28is actually in the description.
01:30If some of you guys are more visual learners like I am,
01:33go check out that article so you can see the numbers
01:35that I'm going to roll through here very quickly.
01:37So we have the first-year starters with no previous experience.
01:412007 with Jimmy Clawson.
01:43We got Dane Crist in 2010.
01:46You have Ever Golson in 2012.
01:48I counted Deshaun Kaiser in 2015, even though he was taking over for Malik Zaire.
01:532017 with Brandon Wimbush.
01:56I also included Desmond Ritter 2018 for the Cincinnati Bearcats
02:01because who was his offensive coordinator in 2018?
02:04It was Mike Denbrock.
02:05And it actually helped the numbers a little bit
02:07because when you average everything out,
02:08this is the first year as starters for these players
02:11with no previous starting experience.
02:132,149 passing yards.
02:18You have 16 touchdown passes, 7 interceptions,
02:21so a low interception total.
02:22You also have a 58.2 completion percentage,
02:25so a little bit lower.
02:26And that group averaged out at 347 yards rushing on the ground
02:31and 7 touchdowns.
02:33Now, so context speaks.
02:35Some people will say,
02:37I don't want to include Clawson in the 2007 conversation
02:40because he played on a really bad football team
02:42and he also split some time with Evan Sharpley.
02:44And that's fine.
02:46That context, I'm okay with you having that perspective.
02:48But I also added Desmond Ritter into this conversation,
02:51even though he's not a Notre Dame quarterback
02:53and he actually had a pretty good year his first year
02:54through 20 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions for Cincinnati.
02:57I threw that one in there to negate that little bit of potential pulldown
03:01that Clawson would have.
03:03But regardless, I think we have a pretty decent sample size.
03:07Now, obviously, Coach Denbrock was a part of a couple of those
03:09Notre Dame staffs that we talk about.
03:11Obviously, 2015 was the most successful quarterback we've seen
03:14from a full-scope production perspective with Deshaun Kizer
03:17with 21 touchdowns, only 10 interceptions, over 2,800 yards,
03:20and also had over 500 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
03:25So all of this is to say, what is the expectations that you have
03:29for C.J. Carr or Kenny Minchie entering 2025?
03:33Because I do think that we need to just kind of take a step back for a second
03:36and understand whether it is Carr, who a lot of people view as the favorite
03:41and totally fine, or if it is Minchie,
03:43there is going to be growing pains here, folks.
03:45There is going to be.
03:46I feel like there's a part of the fan base out there that just assumes
03:49in a regular season, I'm not talking about the full playoff run,
03:51but in a regular season that C.J. Carr is just going to go out there
03:54and throw for 3,000 yards, 30-something touchdowns,
03:57and he is going to be the best quarterback Notre Dame has seen
04:00in a very long time.
04:01Maybe he ends up doing that, but there is no track record
04:04of his situation, a guy coming in seamlessly
04:07and being that type of player.
04:09Will the pass protection be better?
04:11Will the wide receiver play be better?
04:13Will Marcus Freeman, Mike Denbrock take the shackles off the offense
04:16a little bit and become a little bit more of a passing-centric offense?
04:19Because you also have Jeremiah Love, Jadarian Price,
04:21and this great backfield behind you.
04:23I personally believe that Notre Dame will lean into the run game this year
04:26and make quarterbacks comfortable, especially early on in the season.
04:30So that's the thought process that I have for the quarterback position.
04:33But I want to hear from you ultimately.
04:36What are your expectations for 2025 from either Carr or Minchie?
04:41Give me some production predictions.
04:43How many touchdowns, yards passing, rushing yards, all of the good stuff.
04:47I also want to see just how excited are you for the season overall?
04:51If it's Carr, Minchie, whoever, which one personally would you like to start?
04:57But ultimately, whoever does start, what do you think Notre Dame is going to be in 2025?
05:0111-1, 12-0, national champion.
05:04I want to hear your predictions in the chat.
