00:38Voting is underway in the constituency of St. James North in Barbados in a by-election following the resignation of incumbent Labour Party member of Parliament Edmund Hickson.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Habana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:00On Wednesday, the Venezuelan armed forces deployed the Republic plan to warranty the safety of citizens and to secure the process of the upcoming regional and legislative elections of May 25th.
01:23In the face of destabilization attempts by the far-right opposition unveiled by the government in the past week, the Republic operation aims at securing the democratic exercise with a deployment of 412,000 troops nationwide.
01:37In addition, a total of 1,419 senior and regional prosecutors will warranty the progress of the strategic election across the 15,748 election centers.
01:51The operation quick start headed by the sectoral vice president of political sovereignty, security and peace Vladimir Padrino seeks to ensure the safety of over 21.5 million Venezuelans called to vote at 27,736 polling stations across the country on May 25th.
02:11From the National Electoral Council, this is a symbolic act and it also marks a milestone in the electoral calendar, which we have been working hard on since the call for this electoral process.
02:34Let us remember that there are two elections in the same electoral process, where 569 positions will be elected throughout the national territory to elect 285 deputies to the National Assembly for the new constitutional period 2026-2031.
03:02We will also be electing 260 deputies to the legislative councils and 24 governors.
03:12Quintero also pointed out that this will be the first election of a governor for the state of Guyana-Esequiba.
03:21It marks and reinforces even more the sovereignty, because we are electing the first governor of the state of Guyana-Esequiba.
03:31On the 26th, in the morning we will have a governor in the state of Guyana-Esequiba, eight deputies to the National Assembly and seven deputies to the legislative councils.
03:45And it is the popular mandate expressed by the people of Venezuela in the consultative referendum of December 3rd, 2023.
03:57We are then closing a cycle of sovereignty and raising the expression of the institutionality of the vote.
04:07As part of the Back to the Homeland plan, Venezuela received a new flight carrying a total of 90 nationals who were sent from Texas in the United States.
04:16In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a plane carrying 77 men, six women and seven children landed at Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiketia.
04:26This was part of the safe return of Venezuelans to their homeland.
04:30The state authorities ensured that health and legal security protocols were in place for those deported by Donald Trump's government.
04:38A total of 4,192 Venezuelan nationals have returned to the country through the humanitarian plan so far in 2025.
04:47Brazil's Shukuru indigenous nation has just finished its 25th annual assembly.
04:57Our correspondent in the South American country Brian Muir has more.
05:00After three days of debates, speeches from visiting politicians and indigenous leaders,
05:08and a plenary which produced a collective statement denouncing criminalization of indigenous people in Brazil,
05:14Chief Marco Shukuru led thousands of followers on a long march down from the Ururuba Hills into downtown Pesquera, Pernambuco.
05:27These commitments we carry extend far beyond me.
05:31They are for our ancestors.
05:35They are our Mother Earth.
05:37Our Mother Nature calls us to continue our mission to watch over, protect, and care for this land that we will return to one day and become one with.
05:58In addition to unifying the Shukuru from over a dozen villages on their 28,000 hectare reserve in the Ururuba Hills,
06:09this year's march marking the end of the assembly was an important show of political force at a moment in which a group of far-right politicians aligned with ex-president Bolsonaro
06:19are using dirty legal maneuvers to try to remove Chief Marcos from office.
06:23We believe nothing could be more fitting, dedicating our 25th assembly to the issue of criminalization.
06:31Especially as Chief Marcos, current leader of the Shukuru people and son of Chief Chicao, faces such persecution.
06:38And he's not alone. Today, with the rise of social media and increasingly extreme conservatism, racism has become disturbingly normalized.
06:47In 1998, Chief Marcos's father, Chief Chicao, a beloved leader who led a return to the Shukuru's traditional religion to mobilize his people to fight for their rights, was assassinated by ranchers.
07:00This year's annual march was special because for the first time, Chief Marcos led it as the democratically elected mayor of Pesquera.
07:06We are ending our event today at the location where they murdered Chief Chicao.
07:13He died here 27 years ago, on this day.
07:17For which Shukuru, this is a moment of pride.
07:20The Shukuru are well aware of the challenges that lie ahead. As a passage from the Assembly's final declaration reads,
07:31From a violated past to a criminalized present, we will resist.
07:36Brian Meir, Telesur, Pesquera Pernambuco.
07:39Pesquera Pernambuco.
07:42Panamanian Union leaders, Raul Mendes, has requested political asylum in the Bolivian Embassy denouncing political persecution and harassment from the Molino government.
07:52After almost 30 days of indefinite strike in defense of the country's sovereignty and against the government's reforms to the Social Security System,
07:59the Secretary General of the Construction Workers Union, Sontrax, is currently at the Bolivian Embassy after denouncing threats and persecution at hands of unidentified agents.
08:12Panama's Executive and Prosecutor's Office have carried out a series of anti-union measures, raiding headquarters, freezing union assets, increasing repressions and detaining workers.
08:22In this context, Sontrax has denounced this as a campaign that seeks to silence the workers' movement.
08:34Voting is underway in the constituency of St. James North in Barbados in a by-election following the resignation of incumbent Labour Party member of Parliament, Edmund Hinkson.
08:44Precisely, Hinkson, who had represented the constituency in the House of Assembly since the 2013 general election, resigned from the elected position on April 25th.
08:56That same day, Prime Minister Mia Motley announced the date of the polls with President Sandra Maison, issuing a day later a writ for the election to take place.
09:06Nominees were registered on May 6th, with the four elected candidates being Chad Blackman from the Barbados Labour Party, Felicia Dujan from the Democratic Labour Party, Alex Mitchell from the Bajan Free Party and Stephanie Williams from the Community Empowerment Party.
09:23In this context, thousands of constituents head to the polls, which will be open from 6am to 6pm, in which constitutes the first by-election held after Barbados became a republic.
09:36And now we have a chat break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at TELASURY English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.

10:31On Wednesday, President Putin also held a meeting with Governor Alexander Kinstein, as well as the heads of local municipalities and volunteers who have been helping those affected by the Kaithing coercion.
10:44The Russian head of state said the country stands united as a team, adding that it was the unquestionable success of all their endeavors.
10:53The President said that the situation in Kirk's region remains difficult even after its full liberation, as Ukrainian forces continue their attempts to move towards the Russian border.
11:06The Chinese government has rejected the sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United Kingdom of Russia, which affects companies in China and the United Arab Emirates.
11:19The Spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry morning expressed Beijing's opposition to any unilateral measure imposed outside the limits of international law or the authorization of the United Nations.
11:33Despite the Ukrainian conflict, she pointed out that several countries, including the United States and European nations, continue to maintain trade relations with Moscow.
11:43The official, therefore, considered it unjustified to interfere in legitimate commercial activities between Beijing and Moscow,
11:51warning that the necessary measures would be taken to protect the Asian giants' sovereign and economic rights.
12:02On Wednesday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ma Ning, said that the missile defense shield announced by U.S. President Donald Trump undermines global stability.
12:12The Spokeswoman stated that Beijing has asked Washington to abandon the deployment and deployment of the global missile defense system as soon as possible.
12:22China claims that the U.S. plan aims to create an unrestricted defense system and proposes increasing research, development and deployment of all types of missile interceptor systems.
12:34This would increase the risk of a global arms race.
12:37On Tuesday, the U.S. President announced the creation of the gold dome system, which is expected to cost $175 billion.
12:53The U.S. puts its own interests first by seeking its absolute security, violating the principle no country's security should come at the expense of orders.
12:59This undermines global strategy balance. China's press a serious concern over it. We urge Washington to abandon development and deployment of a global missile defense system as well.
13:09We recommend the U.S. takes concrete actions to enhance the strategy of emotional trust among powers and uphold global stability.
13:17Beijing confirmed Wednesday that the Ministers of Economy and Commerce of China and the Association of South-South-East Asian Nations
13:26have successfully concluded negotiations to bolster the free trade zone.
13:31On a videoconference, the aforesaid authorities met Tuesday to nearly a settlement of negotiations that began in November 2022.
13:40In this context, they signed the CAFTA 3.0 deal regarding the China-Asian free trade area.
13:47Thus, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce advanced. They were one step away from signing the update in protocol.
13:53Overall, Chinese representatives and the 10 Southeast Asian countries assure CAFTA 3.0 agreement will send a strong message of support for free trade and open cooperation.

15:08Welcome back to From the South.
15:34The Palestinian Authority has reported an Israeli attack on a diplomatic delegation in the northern part of the occupied West Bank.
15:42The attack took place in the Jalim Refuge Camp, where a delegation of Arab and European ambassadors and consuls were assessing the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the area.
15:53The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the attack constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the fundamental principles of diplomatic relations set out in the Vienna Convention.
16:05The institution also stated that the Zionist occupation force is intended to intimidate the diplomats.
16:11Currently, no injuries have been reported.
16:14In this context, the government of Venezuela condemned the incident through its foreign minister, Ivan Hill.
16:27The denunciation stressed that Venezuela condemns in its strongest possible terms.
16:32The Israeli attack on an Arab-European diplomatic delegation in Jenin shooting at ambassadors and consuls confirms that Israel does not respect any rule of international law.
16:43They think they are above everything, above life itself and above diplomacy.
16:48In addition to Venezuela's distress, this is barbarism, this is genocide, led by the word criminal Netanyahu.
16:56It is a war against humanity itself.
16:58And close by denouncing how even in these circumstances we see the complicit silence of some governments.
17:06It is a criminal as the bullets and bombs falling on the Palestinian people.
17:24In Palestine, authorities registered at least 326 people dead from malnutrition and lack of medicines as a result of the ironclad Israel blockades since March 2.
17:34Authorities said 58 people died from malnutrition, 242 from food and medicine shortages, and 26 kidney patients died due to lack of adequate nutritional care.
17:46Palestinian health authorities reiterated a dire situation in the Strips hospitals due to the ongoing Israeli attacks and the shortage of life-saving medicines and equipment.
17:56Israel allowed the entry this week of dozens of truckloads of supplies to the territory.
18:02However, the United Nations said that it is insufficient to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in the coastal enclave.
18:09Meanwhile, the Israeli site continues to violate its commitments and obligations by continuing to prevent the entry of life-saving AIDS through the Kedem Shalom Crossing south of the Gaza Strip for the third day in a row.
18:29The occupation has stopped the entry of aid without an illegal or humanitarian justification at a time when the end-way is suffering from a severe shortage of food, medicine and fuel.
18:39Israel has pursued a policy of systematic salvation against an estimated 2.4 million Palestinians.
18:46In Barcelona, Spain, hundreds demonstrated on Wednesday in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to demand an end to the Israeli genocide.
19:00The main mobilization took place in the Raval neighborhood to mark a year of the encampment in solidarity with Palestine,
19:07where several university students and faculty denounced the complicity of the governmental education institutions in the ongoing genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
19:18Like this, students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona hold on a new encampment to protest against Tel Aviv's actions with activities including barges and public tribunes.
19:29In addition, students are calling out the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for failing on its promise to halt armed trades with the Sinai regime.
19:39Likewise, protesters gathered on Wednesday in front of the Italian parliament in solidarity with Palestine and to demand an end to Israel's attacks on Gaza,
19:56waving Palestinian flags and holding manners to call for a ceasefire protestors accused Israel of genocide,
20:02condemning the destruction of hospitals and the Zionist James' use of hunger as a weapon of war.
20:09Demonstrators denounced Tel Aviv's actions as an ongoing crime against humanity.
20:13The mobilizations happened as these release strikes continued to pound the Gaza Strip after the intensification of the offensive,
20:21despite the surge in international anger.
20:24The Sudanese army reported that after strategic operations it maintains control of most of the African nations territory.
20:36Army authorities said it took full control of Greater Khartoum region that includes the capital,
20:43after a long-running battle against the paramilitary rapid support forces.
20:47After recent operations, the Sudanese army has also succeeded in driving the RSF out of four other states.
20:55Sudan plunged into civil war on April 15, 2023, when tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open war.
21:05The war has killed at least 24,000 people and displaced millions through, though the death toll is likely far higher.
