00:00In an epic about-face by Apple, Fortnite will be returning to the U.S. App Store for the first time in five years.
00:06The game was removed in 2020 after the game's creator, Epic Games, tried to circumvent the 30% fee Apple charges developers for in-app purchases.
00:14It instead linked out to its own website in order to avoid the fees.
00:17In April, a judge ruled that Apple was not allowed to charge developers for purchases that users made on its outside website,
00:23and Epic Games asked for Fortnite to be reinstated in the U.S.
00:26But despite meeting approval requirements for being added to the App Store, Apple dragged its feet on the decision,
00:32ultimately prompting a judge to force Apple to allow the game or explain why it wouldn't be reinstated.
00:38The fees Apple brings in from the App Store are an integral part of its services business.
00:42That also includes advertising, AppleCare warranties, payment, and subscriptions.
00:46Apple reported roughly $27 billion in revenue from its services arm last quarter.
