Boeing, through its subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences, has unveiled a new version of its SKIRON-X drone, marking a significant advancement in the flight endurance of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Using a hydrogen fuel cell, the SKIRON-XLE model can now achieve up to 7 hours of continuous flight—double the endurance of the battery-powered version.
The update is part of the third generation of the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), which features upgrades to avionics, ground control station, a redesigned nose cone, and an optional long-range radio.
The standard battery-powered SKIRON-X has seen its flight time extended from 3 to 3.5 hours. Meanwhile, the hydrogen fuel cell version not only offers greater range but also changes in weight and payload capacity: the payload has been reduced from 2.26 kg to 1.45 kg, while the total takeoff weight has increased from 22.2 kg to 24.5 kg.
This innovation highlights Boeing’s focus on sustainable, long-endurance technologies for surveillance, reconnaissance, and data collection missions—even with moderate sacrifices in payload capacity.
